This week, co-hosts Mike Doran and Peter Rough are joined by Allison Hooker, seasoned Asia hand with extensive experience working on issues relating to the Korean Peninsula and the broader Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan. The trio discuss key developments to watch out for in the year to come, beginning with Taiwan’s presidential election that gave the ruling DPP a historic third straight term.

The DPP got 40% KMT got 33% so the gap was actually bigger than described here and not really 'winning by a hair'. To just say oh well the Taiwanese voted this way because 'it's complicated' and that they all feel differently about the mainland is a terrible analysis because it's actually quite simple, the Taiwanese are +90% opposed to any unification with China, the difference in opinion and voting is over what is the best way to avoid unification. Overall this was a disappointing analysis, not exactly wrong but lacking any meaningful depth or insights.

Yep. I live in Taiwan. And actually, far fewer than 10% of people want to live under the CCP. Even almost all KMT voters do not actually want that-they're just deluded about what voting for the KMT would likely entail in the end. And most of the TPP voters are young kids who got sold on "both sides-ism" thing with the KMT and DPP but who also have no desire to live under CCP rule.

I think the bigger problem for the Lai team is this fact: his wife was Abe’s goddaughter, and his VP was born in Japan. So CCP has the pressure to not let any Japanese related regime to rule Taiwan again. So something will happen prior to 5/20…
