The explanation I like for it is that the Decepticons think Counterpunch is his true form and Punch is his Autobot disguise, while the Autobots think the inverse... I really enjoy the idea of him having a serious identity conflict lol

I've always thought Counterpunch would work best as a double-agent. Like, the Decepticons know Punch and Counterpunch are the same bot, but believe that Counterpunch is the true identity and that Punch is the disguise. So the Decepticons believe there's a Decepticon spy in the Autobot ranks, but in reality there's an Autobot spy in the Decepticon ranks.
