When the song is so complex that Mike Portnoy has difficulty counting to 6, you know you’re witnessing ceiling-shattering difficulty!
@HansaGBB Жыл бұрын
You know you have that "home" or "tonic" note in a scale that you always comeback - or in other words - resolve to? That's exactly what they doing with time signatures. They take you to odd, dissonant places and then take you back home to those 4/4, 6/8 measures. It's genius.

Meanwhile, my bassist stares at me when the bridge I composed contains a single 2/4
@yesnickcarter Жыл бұрын
my bassist accidentally wrote a riff in 9/8. i had him repeat it a dozen times to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. that he could get it right every time. then i explained to him and the guitarist that they have to count to 9 to get the tonight right. i was so scared that they wouldn’t be able to play the song anymore after they understood it. but they managed. i tried to have them play something in 6/8, but they couldn’t hang. it has to be 4/4, unless they write it.

@@yesnickcartereven tho its 11 months later, I completely understand them, i play drums and guitar, time signatures always get me confused, but then i just feel it out and it works out, if i over think it i cant play it, i can play this song start to finish on drums playing with a backing track, but the second i start to count the bars in my head i get lost it’s entirely feel

It really says a lot about the quality of their compositions, that you don't notice the weirdness of the counts when you just listen. There's very literal jarring or weird. It all flows well, but then you try to count and you're surprised at your confusion.

I find it much easier to divide the song into parts that have a challenging transition, practice and memorize them and then the whole together. This one is way to distracting to me, if you have to count every measure. Just my opinion.
@andreagrazianodibenedetto14642 жыл бұрын
Same. Listening to the music and accessing the measures from there is much more organic. While there clearly is a mathematical structure to music, the essential side is on the proper feeling.
