Most women want to save life!!!! You can not have a building that is flimsy & expect a racoon not to get into it, especially with chickens in it! Take responsibility for your livestock yourself & don't put the blame elsewhere. If you are going to have animals expect to take care of them properly. Hello Brooke, Sorry for the loss of the flock. Raccoons are nocturnal and they carry rabies. Make sure the pets shots are up to date and you and the kids be careful if out from dusk until dawn in the yard. The treatment is not as bad as it used to be but you still don't want to have to go through that. Raccoons are destructive by nature. Be careful with your cats too. They are mortal enemies of raccoons. As you found out they love cat food but will eat dog food as well. Don't leave bowls of food outside and try to store extra food in animal resistant containers and indoors if possible. Keep up your marksmanship because you may have an entire family of them around. The one you caught in the trap was only a year or two old. Great to see one of your workshops happening. Keep living your dreams and keep getting outdoors and enjoying life.

There is a way to buy a motorcycle horn from harbor freight and using a wire system stretched, and spring system that when something pushes against the wire the horn goes off which is attached to a big battery. Animal gets scared and runs like hell and chickens are safe. Your husband should be able to figure that system out. It is like trip wires to let you know when a sasquatch is coming to camp.

A few days later we lost the rooster due to I juries from the coon. And one of our big hens got grabbed around the neck earlier that week. Lost a lot of feathers but with some vet spray she should be back in her flock by next week. And the week before that one of our ducks got snatched out of the duck run because our kids didn't close the hatch all the way. We caught the coon and dispatched of it. I know this is an old post I'm commenting on but I feel your pain and frustration.
