George Bowen...well you know what, a lot of other women have no desire to kill something just because it causes problems...some of us prefer to peaceably solve the problem! Most women want to save life!!!! You can not have a building that is flimsy & expect a racoon not to get into it, especially with chickens in it! Take responsibility for your livestock yourself & don't put the blame elsewhere. If you are going to have animals expect to take care of them properly. I wish MORE men had a heart & didn't think with their penis, the world would be a better place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spare me your response, we both have had our say!!!!

Hello Brooke, Sorry for the loss of the flock. Raccoons are nocturnal and they carry rabies. Make sure the pets shots are up to date and you and the kids be careful if out from dusk until dawn in the yard. The treatment is not as bad as it used to be but you still don't want to have to go through that. Raccoons are destructive by nature. Be careful with your cats too. They are mortal enemies of raccoons. As you found out they love cat food but will eat dog food as well. Don't leave bowls of food outside and try to store extra food in animal resistant containers and indoors if possible. Keep up your marksmanship because you may have an entire family of them around. The one you caught in the trap was only a year or two old. Great to see one of your workshops happening. Keep living your dreams and keep getting outdoors and enjoying life.

There is a way to buy a motorcycle horn from harbor freight and using a wire system stretched, and spring system that when something pushes against the wire the horn goes off which is attached to a big battery. Animal gets scared and runs like hell and chickens are safe. Your husband should be able to figure that system out. It is like trip wires to let you know when a sasquatch is coming to camp.

I actually had to put box wire around my chicken coop & pen...sides, top & bottom; it was extensive but I haven't had any problems in over 2 years

Last week we had a coon get into our chick coop where our little chicks are. We lost eight out of fourteen chicks that night. The coon pried a board and chicken wire to get in to them. A few days later we lost the rooster due to I juries from the coon. And one of our big hens got grabbed around the neck earlier that week. Lost a lot of feathers but with some vet spray she should be back in her flock by next week. And the week before that one of our ducks got snatched out of the duck run because our kids didn't close the hatch all the way. We caught the coon and dispatched of it. I know this is an old post I'm commenting on but I feel your pain and frustration.

Sorry about your chickie babes. Peonies are my favorite I'm in the north island in NZ and only grow in colder regions which the south island but I do love to them. Good luck with your next lot of chickie babes.

With all those mints I'm surprised you don't have Lemon Mint. I'm not a tea drinker but when I had lemon mint in my yard I enjoyed the occasional cup.

Girl…..I’m feeling the rage right with you! Two days ago the largest fox I’ve ever seen attacked one of my chickens only 20 feet from me! I chased that thing down the field and he eventually dropped my chicken. I dressed her back and neck by cleansing it with Dawn detergent water and dressed it with antibiotic. She’s still alive two days later. I started out with 20 birds. I now have six. That Fox squared off with me too like it wanted me to fight. I am so mad.

My condolences on the loss of your chickens. It is heartbreaking to watch animals dwindle know there is nothing you can do. We have Raccoons in my town. They are a bane of my existence. These aren't hostile; they are voracious. grrr. Thanks for taking us along.

Koons are smart I had to put up 3/8 inch hardware cloth on top of the page wire and screw it to the metal post of the dog pin I had dogs scraring chickens so they would put their heads through the holes and another dog would get it I got one of the dogs and I know where the other dog is just waiting on it to come back a steel trap will ret it Need to put the wire on top also

Been there done that. Lost 13 Buff Orpingtons in one afternoon. Broad daylight. I was working on the hack porch 200 ft away. Never heard a thing. They were free ranging. It was a fox. Never did catch that thing.
