It’s remarkable to look back on these films in the light of what we now know about the impacts of modern farming on the environment and climate. What appeals to some as rustic and traditional is of course anything but, and if we could bring back my father’s generation who grew up managing the land by hand with heavy horses, he would be just as perturbed as many are today at the normalising of practices which are now recognised as profoundly unsustainable. Our futures must lie in closer ties with our countryside and our food production. Only then will we come to truly appreciate the fragility of nature.

Brings back so many memories. Why oh why was Country Ways shelved in favour of the disposable, ephemeral rubbish that replaced it I cannot fathom
