Interesting. The fact that Charles Schultz introduced the character swimming at the beach tells me everything I need to know about the man's character. That means it didn't even enter his head that the beach is probably the last place that Franklin would have been -- where white people would've been screaming that his family was polluting the water. Fills me with warm fuzzies❤️

I’m a big Peanuts fan. When my daughter saw a pic of Franklin, she instantly thought it was a joke. I quickly said that’s for reals. I said “ that’s Franklin” she still didn’t believe me. @@MnDisease I agree. That is why I like what these newer Peanuts specials have done with Franklin’s character. They are making him into an actual person, and they are moving away from just slapping him with the lazy “straight guy” character trait and calling it a day. I do wish that Schulz had introduced more characters of color, because, as it is, they cannot just add more characters. It would probably ruin the original material. If there were more original Peanuts characters of color, then these specials could have developed their characters, and we could have had a more diverse cast. However, as it currently stands, they must work with what they were given, hence the Franklin special, which, quite frankly, was an excellent story, in my opinion.

What helped Franklin stay around to this day is he was made to work with Peanuts' art style. The art style is extremely simplistic. Every human child has the same face (this was one of the reasons the Little Red Haired Girl never showed up. Schultz believed he couldn't make a girl as unbelievably pretty as Charlie Brown described). With the same base design, you just change the hair and clothes (or in Charlie Brown's case, make the head unnaturally round) and you have a new character. It was probably difficult due to weekday comics being exclusively black ink on white paper, but Shultz found a good way to show Franklin's race without looking like a blackface. Instead of completely filling his body with black ink like what happened with Jackson, he drew thin lines over Franklin's skin, allowing the usual Peanuts face (and his black hair) to still pop out while still showing that Franklin had a darker skin color. It was rough at first since the lines were much thicker in his earlier appearances, but Shultz was able to perfect his use of thin lines on Franklin over time. Of course, the Sunday strips and animated stuff removed these limitations since they allowed full color instead of black and white, but Schultz found the best way to make an appealing design for Franklin even with his limitation, looking less like a bad caricature and just another everyday kid.

I don't have many outside of stupid. I came on here to say it’s not always a learned behavior. Some years ago I dated a white guy and my daughter at the time I could tell that she didn’t like him for some reason when I got her alone I asked her why she didn’t like him she said because he’s white.. I explained to her the same way. It was explained to me when I was her age. It doesn’t matter what a person‘s color is as long as they treat you with respect and dignity, that’s what matters most. Well, it took several months for her to finally come around to liking him. when she got older, she explained to me why she didn’t like white people it was because a teacher ( history teacher I’m assuming) told the class about slavery and in my daughters elementary school mind she assumed all white people were mean and hated black people. The point to this is racism is not always taught by parents.
@smiller2044

@kia6955 sometimes it's taught in society (or school). Bet the school didn't teach about all the wonderful things Black folk do and have done or talk about Black culture the same white culture or white European culture is. When I watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving as a kid (my third favorite Charlie Brown holiday special), I didn’t think much about Franklin’s race or the fact that he was sitting by himself. To me, it seemed like a poorly planned, spur-of-the-moment dinner, caused by Peppermint Patty inviting herself and her friends. To be honest, I hadn’t heard of Jackson until now. Franklin was Charlie Brown's friend first. Their friendship saw no color. Bringing Franklin in with the rest of Charlie's friends may have taken some time for the others to get use to. Because of the racial differences, the way a black person may have been view by a white person- how kids were raised to handle themselves by Parents.... explaines to ME whey Franklin was sitting at the table all alone on that side. To me, it was in realtime back then.

The only contention I have with "critical race theory" aka CRT is that it should have been called "ALL American History". #wearehistory #loveyourchannel

Critical Race Theory is a graduate law class about how racism is baked into American Jurisprudence. It is very specific. All American history should be taught. Including uncomfortable topics.

CRT is not history. It is an observation of history and it's impacts on race. Stop listening to yte folks. History is a study of the past. CRT is a study of how the past impacted people.

When I was a little girl in the 70s they used to show reruns of the Dennis the menace 50s show and the character Jackson was not included on the television show, there were no Black characters except for the occasional appearance in the stereotypical employee roles

You should totally do the history of Star Trek and it's including of colored people's, ranging from the 1960's where the story takes place in the future of 2400 it showed a place where everyone is equal, such a fringe thought at the time it has to take place into the far future where skin color isn't a thought 🧐. Easily deep space nine takes this to a whole new level where a African American man played by Avery Brooks is the lead main character where he is a single father after a terrible war and on a cusp on a new galactic war.

An episode titled "The Ultimate Computer" showed Doctor Daystrom, creator of a supercomputer, as not some bald, bespectacled Poindexter, but as a large, powerful black man. I saw it as a success for racial acceptance (and somewhat for nerd acceptance, as well).

Franklyn is as much a part of black history as the 761st tank battalion. One other thing about Franklyn. I believe when Shultz was crafting him, he needed to give him a name. Shultz had a black friend who he confided in about what he was doing. So when he wanted to name him ,he named him after his friend…..Franklyn.

it's FRANKLIN btw; "In the 1994 animated television special You're in the Super Bowl, Charlie Brown, Franklin's full name is given as Franklin Armstrong. According to Robb Armstrong, the African-American creator of the comic strip Jump Start, Schulz called him during the special's production and asked if he could make "Armstrong" Franklin's last name, and Robb Armstrong, considering it a "tremendous honor", gave his permission.[15] Since this surname is never mentioned in the comic strip (nor in any other special for three decades), it is generally considered to be outside of Peanuts canon".
