Not ALL Black people drink Hennessy. Just a pseudo-culture marketing scheme to me. On the rare occasions I do drink, I limit myself to a couple of beers or wine with a meal and good company.

Black people like cognac, especially certain brands, simply because it was heavily marketed in the black community. Like many Americans, we are susceptible to marketing of products that are meant to imply status. And possibly we are just a little bit more susceptible to status marketing

My dad worked with a lot of African Americans. He loved going on cruises and when he told his coworkers they always asked him to buy bottles of White Hennessey. All they told us was it wasn't sold stateside (which is true) -so we never knew the history behind it, just thought they wanted it because it was not sold in this country. He always brought back whatever the limit for duty free purchases was (also probably what you could reasonably carry on your person with luggage and stuff. Interesting to know the reasoning behind it.

I would say it depends on the type of woke. If it's actually awareness, then yeah, more should be. But there is this whole other type of woke. The type that make EVERYTHING about race, or gender, or sexuality, etc. and are hostile about it, treating everybody who doesn't believe exactly like them with contempt. You know the type. These are the type that take offense for others, and then get mad when none was taken by the others. They tend to scold people for not being "woke" enough. "As an Identity X, you should feel a certain way, and it's problematic that you don't".

I would note that in the 1990's some Black social leaders spoke out about the marketing in Black communities of alcoholic beverages like malt liquor and brandy/cognac as well as menthol flavored tobacco products on billboards and Black media. Some believed it encouraged young people to seek such products to look 'cool'. The protests led to a significant decline in such marketing directed to mainly Black persons.

0:42 absolute nonsense. Even though we export 97% to the states doesn't mean we don't consume cognac. Cognac is a part of our culture and heritage, on Christmas after dinner almost every French family will go for a digestif and usually it's cognac. I mean it's literally the name of a whole region, saying we "rarely" consume it is just false. What's true though is that Americans just over do it, like pretty much everything else.

I can help out with Pepsi. Pepsi heavily marketed towards the African American community relatively early on (I think since the 20s) but it exploded after the coke vs pepsi "wars". Pepsi also used positive characters in their adverts, like black doctors and professionals - so maybe not directly targeted at Black people, but the comparable novelty of black people being shown in a positive light in US marketing, would probably make it seem that way to both black and white people. I think it might also have been slightly cheaper in price too, which may or may not have been a factor - but don't quote me on that. As far as Disney and Twitter, those are popular with every community. Well, except the Amish.

I don’t know … maybe as we got older I noticed ppl turning ( the coke sniffing era of early 80s . ) to remmy and couv… then Hennessy popped up one night . I remember dude criticizing us for mixing Hennessy. That we were ruining the fringes by adding 7 up .. 😂. I did also notice uppity blacks drinking Hennessy early 90s . Now Alize ? Tupac turned me onto that . I loved it . I was a foool so I don’t know anything. But keep up the good work. It appears that money is behind every campaign. From colas to sneakers. From underwear to overcoats. I just wanted to look cool . While cool people got paid to drink , smoke , wear something and the rest of us just danced to the music. I’d like to know why folks switched from kools to newports ? Suddenly ppl were saying: yo man I don’t want one of them chest busters! Anybody got a Newport? And I swear , within a few weeks from nyc to Detroit , 77 people were now smoking Newport after a joint in the parking lot ! All it takes is for a cool looking man or woman to visit a popular night spot and one time only , leave an impression on people that spreads like forest fires. Way better than any tv commercial

Here save 7 mins of your life here's the answer as black soldiers fought for the protection of America's democracy in World War II, French communities thanked Black units through the distribution of French cognac as a sign of appreciation, and began Hennessy's role as a trophy in Black culture. Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination" YW

After all is said - Basically when it comes down to independent point of view, taste and critical thought, we’ve been weighed, measured and found wanting.. Why black people love Timberlands? Why black people idolize Tupac? Why the Hellcat is now the car of choice for black people? Why black people like chicken and waffles? Why black people believe in Jesus? Why black people smoke Newports? Why black people wear their pants around their ankles?

The term woke is and has been used by black people all over the world and in many different languages. The only reason the world adopted WOKE is because it's in English, i'm from a former Dutch colony in South America and in our language we use the same word, with the same definition as our elders( conscious and aware of the reality of things) other nations prolly have theirs.

Wars have always impacted spirits. After WW2 sales of blended Scotch whisky increased mainly to returning white. soldiers, their sons wanting better in the affluent 1980s-1990s kept the Scotch going by drinking the more expensive single malts. In the Black community sales of Cognac really soared when young Black men returned from Vietnam. Vietnam is a hot, humid and formally French country. The French influence is everywhere, the Vietnamese consume Champagne, Cognac very often with Coca Cola to beat the Vietnamese heat. While WW2 did increase awareness of Cognac to the black community it was Uncle Sam sending young Black men to Vietnam that caused the brandy to soar through the 80s, then marketing and rappers helped revitalize sales again. It should be noted that Jack Daniels process was likely taught to Jack by a enslaved man that really never had received credit and only recently recognized.

I love this guys attempt to break down why Henny is popular in the black culture. That shit started in NYC. He needs to talk to OG’s who grew up in the late 80’s early 90’s. A drink called thugs passion helped get Henny popping. (Henny and Alize mixed) Then incredible Hulk later. But 2pac got put on to it in the early 90s plus NY’s go to the south to hustle and freeknik help spread it from there.

I think it’s all constructed, because if we keep in mind that cognac holds the most sugar content next to champagne, and a life long use of them has high risk of developing diabetes, and we all know or at least heard that diabetes has the highest rate in the black community, more people with diabetes more medicine pharmaceutical companies sale.

I've never drank Hennessy and I don't care to...I rarely touch hard liquor...I've seem alcohol ruin too many lives and destroy too many dreams..I lost an uncle to booze...I broke up with a woman, because she thought drinking and paryting were more important than me...If you drink, be disiciplined and know when to stop...Life is better sober :-)
