Hi Kevin. Once again I've thoroughly enjoyed this, your latest presentation. I'm increasingly aware through your videos, that canal living and cruising gives one a sense that has been lost for generations and that is the sense that in travelling this way, it's the journey, more than ever, that's the best part. Be it locks, lift bridges or just the cut itself that gives one that sense of calm that one simply cannot get on a motorway or even on a train. I have a book here, it's a book of photographs all about how nice Mallorca is. It was printed in 1970 and bought as a memento of a holiday there at the time. I hope you don't mind if I write the preface here, tweaking some words to reflect more accurately how they apply to the cut. This is for the benefit of anyone wondering what the attraction of traveling at walking pace really is... "Dear friends and readers. If you are, or imagine you are, a victim of neurasthenia. Deafened and confused by the noise of our modern civilisation and the urge to arrive more quickly at some place where you have nothing to do. If business has filled with numbers, the space in your brain that is intended for what we call intelligence. If the cinema has damaged your optic organism and the flickering has become chronic. Restlessness and worry will not let you live and you want to enjoy a little of the rest to which anybody in this World is entitled who has done no harm to anyone. Then follow me down to the canals of England where calm always reigns and men are never in a hurry, where the women never grow old. Where words are not wasted. Where the Sun stays longer and the moon moves more slowly, sleepy with idleness. This, dear readers, is the land of the canals of England, The 'Cut' and you're always welcome". Well I think that sums up at least my idea of what the canals are all about. Thank goodness the likes of Tom Rolt and his peers pioneered the notion that the crumbling canals could and should be saved. Thanks to him and people like him aided and abetted by current day users who show the canal system for what it really is, people like Country House Gent and others. As long as you and others show the system as it is in real time, the cut will remain the attraction that it truly is. Take care and stay safe From Bob in "cutless" Geordieland

Just been sitting back on Fridays enjoying these vids Kevin! So glad to know the canal has everything, including line dancing! And who knew there were such artists in Stoke (well, some if it was art)! Also noticing you go pull that chimney off without gloves, moving pretty quickly there friend, hot hands and all. The image that sums up though is you sitting down to go under a bridge at 16:21; to me it was a totally candid pic of your quiet enjoyment of the canals. Keep on keeping on, and thanks for sharing !

Kev... how about a hinge on the stern side of your chimney so it can "knock back"? I seem to think Ive seen such a device before. You could put some sort of cradle for it to land on before it hits the deck. You could even attach a string to pull it over before it hits the bridge too.

TBN S08E11: Your bravery can not be exceeded sir, when you chose to unrelentingly continue your journey through great white shark infested canal waters after seeing the mounted Jaws and a human body, shark bitten in half. I am concerned though, that you would put Aslan in harms way. Remember the boat, Orca? By the way, did you go to WaterWorld Resort and ride the water slides? Also, it's a good thing you didn't run over the torso. Jaws theme song would have been a nice touch. Your the best Kevin. Cheers.

Hi Craig and thanks for your concern. The bubbling is the rear lip of the sliding hatch, a lump of steel with a diameter of about 1/2inch. The corrosion is on the surface and looks worse than it is. I touch it up and the other areas of green paint once of year. It's not an issue. 🙂

Always relaxing. Random question, do the “volunteers” on the locks expect a tip? Just curious.
@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers as always Deborah. No it's not expected to tip but nothing stopping a boater from doing so. I've bought volunteers ice creams when there's a stall nearby on a few occassions, which goes down well. :)

Hi Kevin. Looks like Stoke wasn’t a place to stop if you wanted peace and quiet. The place you eventually moored was much more suitable. Have you ever had to just moor for one night and then move on because it was just too noisy? Take care. Nick
@CountryHouseGent

Hi Nick. Yes the mooring was a fine spot for the week. No I've never moved because of noise, just cos of undesirable behaviour. 😁

Hi Kevin - love your vlogs that are still getting me through the weeks! I just wanted to ask you if it affects the engine/workings when you take the chimney off when you go under low bridges? Didn't you used to have a shorter chimney?
@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jackie. There's no discernible difference to the engine with the exhaust off, though the exhaust note is different. Yes I have a shorter exhaust and it will be making an appearance in this Friday's video. 🙂 Cheers,

Kevin, you may have mentioned this in the past, I can't remember, Just how far will Aslan cruise with full fuel? Good to see you again !

On this trip since Lymm on the Bridgewater, I've used about 40 litres over 75 miles.

Good evening, Kevin. An enjoyable vlog as usual but please put me straight on a couple of things that I may have missed previously. Have you used your new two-wheeled toy yet and if so, is it making life easier?😂 As to tea - I can’t even stand the smell. Enjoy your next cruise and keep safe. 🙂

Gooday Susan. Yes I've used the 'speed machine' on a few occasions. It does make the miles vanish more easily and quickly. The problem with tea is that someone hasn't made you a decent cup yet. 😁

If I'm honest Kevin, I cant stang Graffiti, I think it's the standard of drawing you would find 1yr old children with cravings drawing on walls hehe. Hope you are well buddy. Also, on those long straights without any boats, are you ever tempted to accelerate a little whilst nobody is watching?

Another great video Kevin. Thanks for making it for us. You often mention your generator. I would imagine that when Aslan's engine is running you are charging batteries. How long do these batteries last before you have to run the generator? Also, what is your preferred generator brand?
@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed the engine alternator will provide all the power I need. Problem is when the engine's running, I can't hear the audio when editing. 🙂 My bank of leisure batteries will provide enough power for my basic needs for about 2 days at a push, before they hit about 70% SOC. I'm not comfortable taking them lower than that before a charge.

@@CountryHouseGent Understood. I hadnt thought of the noise factor of Aslans engine. Small generators are incredibly quiet these days. I just imagine how interesting it must be to live on a narrow boat. Love your videos. Keep them coming. :)

It looks like the canals are full, that would affect the older bridge height. Lower water level equals greater clearance.
@CountryHouseGent
@CountryHouseGent 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, often during prolonged dry spells the canals can drop 12 inches on occasion. Downside is this slows the boats down noticeably, which isn't always a bad thing.
