the pens for the adult pigs where they went to buy the piglets are way too small, that is cruel, and they stuffed too many piglets in that cage, not fair to the animals 3 would have been enough even if they had to come back a few times, we are making it illegal here in Australia

Oh well done Kieu, you have done the money sums in respect to choosing/ buying a sow for breeding purposes, feeding costs for sow whilst awaiting for her to reach breeding age, additional costs of purchasing AI supplies to induce pregnancy (may have to be done more than once) then feeding costs until the sow gives birth and then its a roulette wheel as to how many piglets are born/survive birth and then feeding costs until piglets can be weaned, separated and fed to sale weight, not to mention vet costs for vaccinations etc. A small scale farm like yours operates better to buy weaned piglets from an established piggery (where you can observe the health of mothers other pigs /piglets in that barn and buy weaned. perhaps already vaccinated piglets. ( much better than taking a gamble by buying piglets from local markets) . Like also that you now have a vet do the vaccinations as the cost of the vet will be covered by not have to pay for the addon's/fees for purchasing medicines from Vet Pharmacies. As a clever lady you have done the math's to work out which is the more viable operation. I also bet its been years since hubby has been pushed up a hill by a younger lady, so that will give him a thrill to overcome his new additional workload duties in the purchase of weaned piglets. My only additional suggestion, ( I really like and wholeheartedly support your new venture to purchase weaned piglets from established piggeries) is to make a timber divides which you can place to divide the newly purchased piglet's in their pen from the much older pigs in the adjoining pen/barn. All this does is prevent the piglets from rubbing their snouts against the curious older pigs in the adjoining pen/barn. Thus avoiding physical contact between established stock and newly purchased piglets, and thus physical transfer of fluid etc and any minor disease's the piglets may have. No great cost involved but as you are not isolating new stock from existing animals; a little thing which may prevent a possible disaster. Ciao Kieu! Mi fa piacere vedere che tutto va bene! Qui sono diversi giorni che piove! Una tristezza perché abito vicino una catena montuosa con montagne molto alte fa già freddo! Ieri nel telegiornale in TV hanno detto che in Italia in tutti gli allevamenti è scoppiata un'epidemia di peste suina! Non sono riusciti ancora a capire come è successo perché sono allevamenti molto all' avanguardia perché allevano maiali per il famoso prosciutto di Parma quindi i danni sono enormi! Speriamo scoprano da dove è venuta!

Hai detto che in un allevamento di maiali c'era il colera africano, solo pensarci mi fa stare malissimo, immaginando i giorni in cui ho perso una serie di maiali da piccoli a grandi, sperando che prendessero misure per evitare che la pericolosa malattia si diffondesse.
