@Angel I've been an arb 20 years and have seen enough. I wouldn't disparage a decent amateur but that tree will fell without a rope. Working off a ladder invites all sorts of misery made evident in the first cut where the branch hits the ladder. All of this is wrong but he seems like a decent guy. The saw isn't even sharp.

@@godislove8740 I’m not an arborist and I totally agree. He is a nice enough guy but I don’t think he understands how lucky he was when that first branch hit the ladder while he’s up there with a running chainsaw. A couple of inches more and it’s a different story. Making the comment like “I thought that might happen” makes it even worse. So you’re telling me you knew this was a bad idea yet you did it anyway?

Once as a young man, elderly neighbor had a big maple like that (short trunk, went to all limbs above it) she wanted cut. I burned firewood, and was always on the hunt, so I agreed to cut it for the wood. It was too close to the house, wires, road to simply cut the whole thing, so I climbed way up in it and started cutting it limb by limb. I look down, and her son had hobbled to the front door on a walker, and he hollered "BE CAREFUL UP THERE. I TRIED TO DO THAT AND THIS IS HOW I ENDED UP!" Boy O.......I could have gone all day without hearing that !

It looks like both chainsaws need sharpened, especially the smaller one. But yeah, be safe! I think it's pretty predictable how the limbs will fall, but rotten limbs tend to be unpredictable.
@krazykeltic81033 жыл бұрын
As others have stated "cut the main trunk" cut it at about waist height. The direction of fall will be between the trunks that are remaining. where you leave the hinge and the way it points will determine the direction of fall. Remember you can cut the hinge from both sides of the tree, and a wedge will help it go in the right direction the hinge can change the natural lean of the tree to get it to fall to either side of the lean. When you have it down you can cut the stump at ground level. The tree seems to be in the open and with the main lean does not seem to be able to hit anything important, go for it.

@mitchjones28213 жыл бұрын
By the looks of the included bark on the trunk, This climber says you made the right move getting above that to make your initial cuts. A ladder is almost always the last choice, but does have its place occasionally. Most extreme caution taken of course.
@mitchjones28213 жыл бұрын
Im not gonna sort through the comment!! When cutting a mainly horizontal limb, especially from a ladder. The best way to keep the butt away all the to the ground is to just make an under cut an inch deep, not a wedge. Just a simple snap cut with the top cut slightly(1/2”-2”) ahead of the under cut so the butt leaves clean.
@wymershandymanservice99653 жыл бұрын
A heavy rope and a come a long let’s you get pressure on a large branch to head in the direction you need it to go. The stretch in the rope keeps good tension on things. Ladder work around trees is always sketchy lol 😆

Evan! Please watch some of the great tree loggers on the Tube. From what I saw in this vid, you are not cutting the "V" notch correctly. That the cut that determines where the limb/tree falls. Since you've already cut off several limbs on the side that you want it to fall, you may have already gone too far. There is a reason there are young timber men. And there are fast timber men. But there are not many old and fast timber men!! What you really want to be is a safe timber man! Keep the ladders "man-lifts" in the shed.

Once you get your man lift you may want to take the opportunity to really scout out the other trees and trim back everything you can
@g.r.48533 жыл бұрын
Rental companies will not rent a man lift in this area if you are going to use it for tree work, too dangerous and high risk of machine damage. Would you feel comfortable with deep notching the tree, making a plunge cut to leave a tab on the back and leave a hinge above the notch and driving wedges very hard into the saw cut, THEN cut the tab? The wedges should tip the tree and there ought to be stored force built up from the wedges being driven very hard into the saw cut.
@maryallen63343 жыл бұрын
That's sensible. If you do hire a man-lift, check the rest of your trees and maybe take out a few dodgey higher branches while you have it.

Cutting down a tree off a ladder is probably one of the most dangerous things you can do . Was the ladder tied to the tree? Please take a course on taking down trees as trees can do strange things as they are being cut

I found taking the cheap rout taking down problem trees is not a good idea. You can end up in the hospital very quickly. Always have someone with you just in case of an accident. Tie a rope to the limbs and use the tractor to put tension on the limb to go the direction you want it to go. Be sure the tractor is a safe distance from the tree.

@@IowaMercMan it very costly, many tree i take down and clean up, a $4000 bill is common in a city lot. but he is in a safe wide open space, and you know the saying, practice makes perfect, we all started some were in time, he has a good tree to take his time, practice limb by limb, from standing on that large area at the base of all limbs, and watch how he cuts a well placed notch, and a good flat level back cut, steering the limb using the meat on the hinge, this is why your back cut must all ways be level and flat at the same height as the center of the v of his notch,, he cant get a safer place to practice..

id just cut a wide V on the back side of the main trunk and cut it down in one shot, nothing there to worry about, never mind cutting limbs off, a walk in the park, but if you must take the limbs of just get up in the tree and stand in the fork of all the limbs and cut each limb at waste hight cutting a good notch on the fall side, you can miss that other tree by notching in were you want it to go, and dont be so fast cutting though you notch leave a meaty corner on the side you need it to pull over to.. let it hing over slow. your safe standing up n the fork, put a rope on you to a limb.. if your worried. you dont need a man lift.. never stand on a later cutting
