The cats simply love you, they are just simply waiting for a pet on the head from you. It is so sweet to watch. Then the cows come to the fence to watch. Your animals sure love you. Probably because you take such good care of them. New wood shed sure would look nice. Well, hello from Michigan, I really enjoy your videos, take care and God Bless.

We process wood for firewood, but we also collect branches for kindling as well as chips from our wood splitter. We have four old plastic garbage cans full of branches broken or cut by table saw to use as kindling. You have to clean up branches if you are cutting your own wood. Or in my case, I have to pick up branches before I cut the lawn every time. It is easy to stack it in a corner of the yard until I can gather them up. Right now we have a bunch of cardboard boxes in the garage filled with chips and slivers from splitting a few cords of wood. The garbage cans were mostly filled a year ago. They are all scraped open along the bottom from hauling to the road. City now has cans we have to use. In 20 years, we have never made kindling from logs. We also save paper egg cartons, and fastfood drink carriers. When I go through the mail and recycle the paper, I remove addresses and full names to burn. Years ago, we saved the waxed cups from fastfood. Just rinse cups and stack.

We have heated with wood for twenty years and while it is a lot of work, it is enjoyable and relaxing. My husband just retired a couple years ago, which means we have more time now. Before that, I did much of the splitting and stacking. My husband made sure logs were cut to size. We use lots of beaches in the 1-3" size, which I cut to size on the table saw we have in the garage. Now that we are in our upper 60s, we got a new natural gas furnace to replace the one that stopped working years ago.

Peter Lee here from Australia : Just a suggestion Leave a good thick layer of ash in the bottom of your combustion heater as this will protect your fire brick layer from deterioration and cracking, the ash retains a lot of heat to keep the house warmer after the wood has burnt. I let the ash build up in mine till it is up to the bottom of the door opening and then push some to either side of the heater box a little higher, its to retain heat. Also rake through the ash in the morning you may find hot coals to get your fire started again with very little kindling. Hope you try this out, good luck.
@chris3m9814 сағат бұрын
@peterlee6574, All great suggestions. From USA Chris
@markpashia706714 сағат бұрын
That was how I did it on daily basis and then clean out well once a week as needed. Saw those hot coals go in the bucket and thought those would help start the new wood. Had a little shovel and a little rake indoors by the fire. Would push the coals to the back and shovel out most ashes, them spread the needed cover back out and go. You are correct that it helps extend the brick's life.
@markpashia706714 сағат бұрын
You can make a rake from a strip of steel about six inches long and an old poker handle to push the coals around.

Always use the torch for rusted parts. Heat the nut to cherry red, it will expand, breaking the rust tension. Easier than struggling.
@markpashia706714 сағат бұрын
Yes, but the key is to heat the nut mostly. You want it to expand more than the bolt threads. Getting both that hot is not needed and might weaken the steel. Saves gas too.

You can refill cans with air by using an old valve stem and air compressor. Just put the rim side of the stem over the air stem on the can and push on it while inflating it with the air compressor.

Its 20 deg here now; I keep my house at 60 deg and it just warmed me watching you split wood and start a fire. Thanks for showing us how you do it; I am happy I don't have to. That is why I built a passive solar house with a geothermal heat pump. In order to improve my health I started eating vegan several years ago so I don't have to take care of animals. When I do start a wood fire, I use old rags that were saturated with engine oil and grease for a starter.

Another thing I've seen people do is to change the splitting blade to a 4-way... Some have fabricated the extra blades themselves and just welded it all together. They say the benefit more than doubles productivity... it more than triples it... if you're concerned about that sort of thing.
@markpashia706714 сағат бұрын
Unless your cylinder is under powered this one is struggling with a single split and a four way would stall it.

@kenhart633015 сағат бұрын
Evan if you use the inners as tops to cover the wood, by cutting them diagonally from corner to corner you'll manage to get two covers out of one inner. They could cover more than one tote by stacking them up to three high and with the covers they look like houses.

Instead of the kindling try using a small bag of Dorritos. Just place the entire bag or a pile of dorritos under your log stack and light the dorritos. They burn hot and are a great fast fire starter. We use them on campfires all of the time.

I would have used the embers to restart the fire (not the ash). Given fine enough kindling, it works a treat. Better than burning off the rubbish from your wood-processing would be to dig out a trench, dump the 'rubbish' in and bury it. Huglemounds make excellent garden beds to grow vegetables.

The bark and small slivers of wood that you said you would get a burn barrel for, why not put it into a metal bucket and take it inside the house and use as kenneling to start fires with. Bark and small wood are perfect for that and might prevent you from splitting pieces into kenneling. We use "trash" like that for our fireplace all the time and works out great for kenneling.

I would advise against just cutting up the unused plastic bulk containers. If they are food grade they make great growing containers for either hydroponics, or hugelkultur. Hugelkultur would also be a great way to use up your scrap wood without burning it. Fantastic way to grow your own herbs and berries.

Look up biochar, or terra preta.... all the excess wood could become a carbon that could help your garden soil. It also sequesters carbon. But its benefits to the environment are mostly in what it helps soil do - and that's what you all are doing, raising things that come from the soil.
