Dear Evan at the Mushroom Farm I worked at and my Father in law used for hay forks they made them up with a Axle shafts out of a heavy duty pick up truck they got from a junk yard and then I cut the the one in to a point

The mice tool box, take all the drawers out (clips on the side runners release with a narrow screw driver), pressure wash the whole thing. grease the bearings, and then spray mint/peppermint 'essential oils' and that should keep them out of the tool box. Plug up any 1/4in or larger holes they can squeeze through too. You might get yourself a 'tin cat' to put on the floor under the tool box when you move it to the next location. +1 pallets under the bales.

Dig a trench behind the Barn, if necessary fill it with gravel, but slope it away from the Barn, water should then flow away. Old wooden pallets on the ground to put the bales on as suggested by many is the way to go.

When moving bales from the field to the barn, use a flat bed hay wagon. You can haul 6-8 bales on a wagon to move them instead of making multiple trips carrying 2 bales.

Forget about pallets and turn your bales on their end and the waste will be minimal inside a barn. I feed all my hay by unrolling the bales by a tractor attachment on the rear of your tractor. You can feed a 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 of a bale and conserve hay.

If you have access to some, putting down discarded wooden pallets would get the hay bales up off the gravel and allow air flow underneath.

Pallets can be had free at a lot of places. They are great to stack round and square bales on. Most lost hay on rolls stored outside is bottom of roll. All hay loss in barn is bottom of roll.

Put some hardware cloth attached to the bottom board of the walls and keep "critters" out of the hay and nesting in the barn........

Clean out the toolbox and then spray it down with some Lysol concentrate mixed with hot water and let it sit for a day or so then rinse it out and let it dry in the sun. Be sure to keep the drawers open for the whole cleaning process and that should rid the pee smell from the toolbox

We always used to use pallets to put the round hay bales on if there was a chance of puddling.....And even if there wasn't,,we still put them on pallets...Not on bare concrete or gravel.

You'll definitely want to put pallets underneath your bales. Two of the only real reasons is airflow and to keep dry. You'll also want to reinforce the sides and back of your pole barn to handle the weight of heavy bales that will end up pressing against it like 2x6 or better- or you could recycle some of the lumber from your bank barn demo.

The hay will wick up moisture from the gravel. My hay is all on pallets inside the metal building on top of concrete floor. Even had to hang tarps on the inside of the outside walls because the metal siding sweats in the warmer winter temps. If you are putting animals in the barn will also need to vent the ridge. Had it raining in my horse barn until I did that. School of hard knocks

You should really put exterior grade outlet covers on all of those electrical outlets. Hay pokes into the outlet, then the barn goes up in flames. If you build a new hay barn in my area of Michigan, the wires are required to be in exterior grade conduit, with exterior grade boxes and covers for all outlet and light switches. the covers don't cost that much, and they are cheap insurance ( might also help with your farm insurance premiums).

Something else to consider is controlling the rainwater runoff from that building with gutters. One inch of rain will produce a little over 600 gallons per 1000 square feet of roof surface. Remember it’s roof square footage not the same as building floor square footage. Just eyeballing it I’d say your barn easily sheds 1500 gallons per inch of rain so image if you had a 2-3 inch per hour rain.

If you use pallets and flip on the flat side you can slack more bales in and along the wall . That how we do it and you go three high and 6 to 9 a row pallet fork work awesome it slack in a build take far less space and you can store far more inside

You can clean that tool chest- wear gloves and a mask, clean out each drawer(might want to wipe the pieces with solvent and let air dry) then remove the drawers and wash each piece with Simple Green. If you pressure wash it it might destroy the wheels and gaskets inside the sides.

Hi Aiden here in Ireland we tend to leave the hay bales out for about 3-5 days after baling as they tend to warm up if there is any moisture left in them many a hay shed have burned down I remember splitting a load of hay with a friend we left ours out for about 2 weeks after they put theirs in straight away there’s went mouldy

We have always stored our bails first row like barrels on pallets and then stack two rows on top of them. Works well and the bottom row stays round, and the short top row doesn't smash the second row too much.

You don't need a bale feeder, just roll them out in the areas that need more help growing. You'll get a better distribution of pee and poop and the waste will help the field grow faster and build up a stand. Maybe only roll our part of a bale if you don't have the cattle to eat it fast enough

You might look at some of the fence line feeding systems. For small operations they can be very practical and look good while keeping you from tearing up muddy fields in bad weather.

Mice are a never ending battle on the farm. 🙂 Just clean the toolbox up & sale it if your not going to use it anymore. Suggestion on the bale storage, set the bottom bales up on edge so that they don't deform their shape with the top bales stacked on top of them. That bale fork that you've got on the back of the tractor works best for moving round bales like you did this time. Like some have already suggested, use the wagon to move bales off of the field to the barn. I've got a bale spear that mounts in the loader bucket that worked really well when I used to bale round bales. Might almost consider selling it. Keep up the good work there. Take care. 👏🏻👏🏻

Jason is right. Lay some pallets on top of the gravel and then place the bales on the pallets. Use pallets made from plastic, they do not rotten under the hay.

well i have never stored any of out round bales inside but thats up to you . only have cattle you might want to check out and see if any one near have wheat straw for bedding you can flak a bale down fairly easily as for using the pallet fork a loose bale on a spike can sometimes just fall apart with the forks you dont have to worry so much

Definitely do not recommend direct on ground storage of hay. Especially in a known wet spot even if the gravel did raise up above the water spot. At least get some pallets to raise the bales up to prevent the moisture from wicking up into the bales. I know moldy hay isnt crazy bad for cows but it is for goats and horses!

Just a suggestion, we have had round bales , large square bales , med &.small square bales and we've stayed with the small but we have always set them on pallets. I can't tell you how much hay that has saved us . Of course ours is stored and stacked outside ( would love to have a shed like yours ) and we have to tarp it , but with the winters we get in Montana, the drifts , run off etc , having it on pallets is the only way to go!!!! one easy way to almost double your storage is to set your bottom row up on end like a cylinder and even your second row then set your third row normal you don't have lose capacity each level. also when you go to make your 3 point bale spear Make it a double I would think you have enough capacity in the tractor to haul 2 on the rear.

For home made round bale feeders my grandpap took hog panels, cut them to length, cut holes in them for his sheep to eat through, and hooked them together with snaps. They worked pretty good for us

If you build a set of spares for the rear the bales are small enough you could build it so you can haul two bales on the back instead of get a wagon but you might also use the same wagon you used for the square bales. Then once you have the Alice Chalmer running again you could have the Alicetown ready to load the bales in the field and then unload with the TMA or the other way around! It’s all just a thought

We had a round bale spear for the front of our tractor, Dad ended up putting 2 on that way they didn’t spin. I agree with the wagon for moving round bales but take top off and just use frame with 2 long 4x4 boards running the length so they don’t roll when moving to barn area

I think the bales will still get wet from the vapor of the evaporating water still pooling under the rock that you just laid down. Rock increases surface area and evaporation rates. That vapor, without a vapor barrier will go up to your hay sitting on the surface.

Some farmers let their bale soak a little for fermentation to help the cows digestion of the hay. Too much moisture causes fire issues from the heat of fermentation. It's a balance of dry versus moist.

Hi Ian, did you consider to put hay in oposite way. I mean not on side which is round, but on bottom. Flat surface on the ground and then another one put on it? It looks like then you will be able to put 3 in one column. Greetings from Poland.
