or an all metal electric wire powered from a mains supply fencing unit. It will also need a real quality earth connection especially in a dry time or drought to be a fully effective deterrent to the animals. Switch the power on early in the Spring and leave it operating continuously (24/7) until livestock are housed for the winter. The power pulse will likely burn back any new vegetation that shorts the fence out all summer.

One of the big reasons that I have been subscribed to your channel for so long is that you teach this old man something new on many of your videos. I learned the hard way to stay away from welded wire fencing. I bought some to fence in our garden, and whenever I tried to stretch it, the welds would break. Woven wire for me from here on out. It's good to know about "high tensile" fencing. As far as welding, I don't have a lot of experience but it seemed easier for me to stick weld over a MIG. I suppose just like anything else, practice and experience is what is needed.

Evan you would get better results if you watered your pasture over night then the ground will take up the water instead of the sun heat evaporating a lot of it, do it over night the grass gets what it needs water at night sun during the day.

Check out Stoney ridge farm fence series. He is raising beef cattle with quote best woven wire fence. Even with that description, he runs barb wire several inches above the woven wire AND he still adds a stand off electric wire on the cow side of the fence at whatever cow chest height measures to keep the cattle from leaning against the fence. Presumably this is high enough off the ground to keep sheep and other smaller animals out of harm’s way.

WELDING TIPS: Striking. It's called that for a reason. Tap the rod to the work surface then pull back off slightly and move to the direction to be welded. You were doing this in some cases but didn't recognize the benefit. Porosity. Those are the holes you're seeing. That's from impurities being drawn into your weld pool. With stick welding, you're going to get that. If you move to TIG welding, the shielding gas will help keep that from happening. It's not a big deal. Stick welding is cheaper and unless you're getting gaps you're better off with this method. Pool Structure. You're moving in a straight line most of the time with your rod. If you make what's called Chevrons (like the letter U) it will give you better penetration, better weld quality, and a better appearance in general.

You are doing pretty good for first time in 30-yrs? Holes in the weld bc you are Long-Arcing (not keeping the rod close enough to the puddle) bc you are down hilling (pulling the rod to you & you are unable to watch your puddle). You may need to hold your rod little more vertically (straighter up & down) watch your video and you will see you are tending to lay the rod down instead of stand it up more (rod angle). Practice and you will be able to Slick a weld on there before you know it. Im glad to see the feed wagons are working in your favor. Yall are doing Good at Farming & probably having Fun in the process. Keep up the Good Work!

We did a least several miles of woven fence fifty years ago . I didn't know if it was high tension wire back then . All of it was used for pigs and sheep before we installed it maybe for the second or third time . We would only install all our posts with what dad called dirty sand . Sand and small gravel mix stripped off the top of our gravel pit . The post holes were about twice the size of the post if we didn't hit big rocks. A little packed in the bottom and packed really well all the way up around . Not only did they not rot , move, or lift from freezing water in the winter . We didn't have any other way to join them together but by doing tightly twisted each wires at a time . No connection ever failed and that fencing was well used when dad would being it home of auctions . We would put one strain of barb wire on the bottom and two on top . It kept most wild animals from digging in and the pigs from trying to dig out . The biggest problem was when we would get snow drift that would cover over the fencing and pull it down or break it because they were so old and well used before we installed them . My nephew owns this farm to this day even though he only raises grains a few short fences are still there almost sixty years later .

Thanks for sharing Evan. Looks like the repair on the grapple should work out okay. Wonder if a single strand of barbed wire above the fence would convince the steer to stay where he's suppose to? They see other animals jump fences and think they can but most of the time will just break them over? Just thinking out loud. Stay safe around there and keep up the great videos. Fred.

I've mentioned before that I have the same grapple and have the same problems.. along with loosing the pins that hold the hydraulic cylinders to the clamps...lol.. and I want to do this as well. I would suggest doing the outside tines while you're at it because I have bent those as well. I mentioned adding extra tine supports to the company to improve their grapples but, I guess it's a cost thing or something because they didn't seem interested in the problem.

The arc welding is hard to master, going vertical or upside down is difficult for sure. Luckily even a bad weld is strong if you have the amps turned up enough and get good penetration. That post with the gate chain that you showed is moving way too much, do you have a tight doubled wire diagonal on it, from the bottom of it to top of next post ? If you do then you might need to dig out around it and add a barrow of concrete.

We stopped using wire gripers for splicing fence because they put a stress riser in the wire where they grab. The wire will always break at the wire grip. Use an old fashioned loop splice and the soft wire won't break as easily. The wire grip will work better on high tensile wire where you dont want to bend the wire to make a loop. Thanks for taking us along for your steer struggles😉
