Letting go is the hardest. My girlfriend rescued a litter of nine cats from under her house several years ago. She house trained them exceptionally well then adopted them out. So sad, but I did keep one for myself and he's been the greatest cat ever. He was so skinny and anemic when we first found him. He made a full recovery and is so full of life. Anyways there is my "no one asked" moment.

Back in 2014 I adopted a little senior minpin girl from a wonderful lady who couldn’t keep her anymore. We met at a shopping mall and the lady sat down on the pavement and held her dog and cried for a half hour. Next thing I knew, I was crying too and I told her we would have an open adoption and for the next 7 years I would text her updates and pictures, even on the last day. It was a wonderful experience and we are still friends. Thank you for helping these dogs find their forever homes.

Foster parents do the very hardest work in rescue, in my opinion. They have to be able to pour all their love into each individual, and then let them go to another family so that they can keep doing it. I could not do it, I'd need to keep every one, I know this. And I have 8 rescue indoor cats, 3 tamed feral cats outside, and 2 rescue dogs (another 1 recently cross the bridge). I'm full up with animals.

This is why many people don't foster. You invest so much emotion, time, care--it's like sending your first born off into the world when they start college. You know that you've given them wings, it's hard to watch them fly away even though you know it's in their best interest to bless someone else with the opportunity to love them unconditionally. You have to teach yourself to let that go and remember that you're sending that soul off to a good life with people who can love and care about them.
