This is an old song, originating in the Appalachian Mts. and written down over a hundred years ago. It's been recorded by many artists over the decades, among them Bob Dylan in the 60s (one of my folk heroes). It was made popular again in the Clooney movie, and surfaced again by Home Free. I love the radiant smiles that "harmonica" brought to your face, Ash -- keep smiling, and keep following HF!

This is one of the most popular Home Free songs. It was the first song I ever heard from Home Free & I was instantly hooked. It really showcases the talent of these 5 men (their tight harmonies, Tim Foust's bass & Adam Rupp's incredible beatboxing). They are my favorite a cappella group. This song is very old (about 100 yrs.) & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.

Great reaction Dave & Ash! Please indulge in more #HomeFree there’s so much to explore from silly to serious, country to do-wop, and everything in between. Some favourites for consideration: Stand By Me Dreamer LIVE at the Ryman feat. Texas Hill - Tim does a fun intro of everyone mid-song, plus it’s an original and a collaboration! One Voice feat. Billy Gilman - watch to the end for an important note Don’t Laugh at Me feat. Mark Wills (and his daughter joins in at the end) - watch to the end for an important message Take Me Home Country Roads Castle on the Hill One Man Band I Can’t Outrun You Brother - you may need to watch twice during your reaction, once for the hilarity and a second time for the lyrics/musicality; and Might As Well Be Me - another hilarious original where you will need to pause to read their “bios” and written answers to really enjoy their wacky humour!

Yes, I was looking for this comment. It puts the entire movie in context. There are articles online about the many similarities / references to Homer's Odyssey in O Brother Where Art Thou. This is from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou starring George Clooney. The film is set in rural Mississippi in 1937, and it follows three escaped convicts searching for hidden treasure while a sheriff relentlessly pursues them. Its story is a modern satire which, while incorporating social features of the American South, is loosely based on Homer's epic Greek poem The Odyssey

Though published in 1913 by Dick Burnett, who did not compose it, this song is an old American Folk Song. It was old when published - he just put it to paper - which then enabled him to earn from its use. Prior to that it was learned "by ear" having originated in & around Kentucky, Tennessee and thereabouts.

Two years ago after my husband passed away, I clicked on this video because this song and the movie were one of my husband's favorites. I remember us watching the movie together and he just roared with laughter. When I watched Home Frees' video I cried tears of joy and sadness. The music made me so happy but I wished my husband could have been there to enjoy it, too. I fell in love with Home Free and I know my husband would have loved them too. He "guided" me to them and they have brought joy back into my life again. Adam Rupp is an insanely talented beat boxer. Absolutely love these guys. Loved your reaction.

Home Free is amazing. This song is really old - about 100 years old and was made popular in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. It’s a great movie. They are the criminals and the law chases them. Yes, a “mouth harp” sound that Chance was doing (he’s back left). Tim is the bass and can sing really low and then sing up with the tenors. He has an amazing 5 octave range. Adam, the beatboxer, was doing the drums, harmonica and other sounds. All super talented. I think you noticed the rain on Rob (glasses) because of his dark clothes. It showed more. I think this was filmed in s. Alabama. Try Can’t Stop the Feeling, Cruise, Stand by Me for more great harmonies. 😍😄

The twangy sounding instrument he's recreating is meant to be, I think, a Jew's Harp. It's a really simple instrument that is basically a sprung reed connected to a small frame that you hold in your mouth. You pluck the reed with your finger and alter the note by changing the shape of your mouth and throat. The mouth acts as a resonating chamber that gives it quite a bit of volume for something so small.

This song is actually rather old. The original lyrics were found in a man's notebook in Appalachian Kentucky and were a bit different from this. I grew up in neighboring West Virginia, and heard this in bluegrass form a couple times as a kid. O Brother, Where Art Thou? completely revitalized it for a young audience, which was awesome. For reference, that movie is a retelling of Homer's "Odyssey." I don't get it, Big Dan.

The "diggory-doo" sound is actually an imitation of a jaw harp, a twangy metal spring clenched between the teeth. It is a old-timey instrument used in county music. In this Home Free cover the acappella sound of the jaw harp is done by Adam Chance (back row _ left). These guys have TALENT.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou is a modern(ish) retelling of The Odyssey. Good job calling out the mouth harp. Not many people recognize that's what they're mimicking. If you enjoyed this version of Man of Constant Sorrow, you should check out the cover by Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci. He is the bass singer in the acapella group Voiceplay (VP) who started a solo channel during Covid. Funny enough, Voiceplay and Home Free are friends and collaborated on Voiceplay's channel for the song Survivor by Destiny's Child. It is both incredible and hilarious. I highly recommend it. Where Home Free is the Country Boys of acapella, Voiceplay is the Theater Kids and is widely considered to be one of the top three acapella groups with Home Free and Pentatonix. Hope to see some of VP's stuff on your channel as well. They are my favorite with Home Free a close second.

Hi guys. Good catch on the mouth harp Dave. I am leaving a link to a video from one of their live shows. the guys leave Adam (beatboxer) on stage alone and he does a drum solo and then some other sounds. In this he actually does a didgeridoo, so you can really hear the difference. It's a great watch and listen and only a small look at what he can do. Oh and the guy in the cowboy hat is the guy who started the group over 20 years ago. He is Chris Rupp (Adam's brother) and a fine singer. He decided a couple years ago to move on to new things and was replaced by Chance (Adam Chance). Only Chris and Adam Rupp were in the original group. The others have been added along the way. Hope you both enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5LRfIqCisZ3psk

The original song was published in 1913 and later covered by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and a host of others. Most recently the song was covered in the movie " O Brother Where Art Thou". IMHO, Home Free is the best band (of any genre) out there. 3 of them are song writers so there are lots of originals. They've toured extensively (150-200 shows a year) for more than a dozen years, so there are lots of live videos as well.

To start someone on anime find something that matches his movie preferences. There are plenty of action, drama, and romance anime to fit most people. Comedy is a little harder to do as a lot of the humor is based on references that he wouldn't likely get. From there try to go with a tried and true classic like Hunter Hunter, Cowboy Bebop, or Ruroni Kenshin to name a few.
