This scene is even more sad when you realize the context. Shirley said that the mirror will help Eustace "see himself the way he really is." So Eustace, the mean old farmer, is actually a sad little boy deep down inside. Very powerful stuff for a cartoon.

Eustace had a sad life growing up with an abusive mother and an older brother who was just better at everything than him. He formed this shell of bitterness to shield himself from it, but deep down he’s still that child from back then. Why when he has moments like this it’s therapeutic for him.

most bad people turn out to be good inside. trauma as a child make them grow up over protective and make them feel that if they show any sign of emotion it will be ignored, manipulated and shoved back in there faces.in turn this creates a mental pattern of the victim thinking emotions like empathy, sadness and love are something to be ashamed of and they are weak if they allow them to surface. so they are always repressed.

Ron Ramc I think one of his best moments was in the mask episode, when kitty confronts him and Muriel with their secrets (that he can't fix anything and Muriel's night snacking). when they do face their individual truths and Muriel gives the message, it's Eustace who hits the nail on the head saying that "it's okay, no one's perfect"

It's mostly because Courage wasn't a show that payed much if any attention to continuity, which I'm not saying is a bad thing at all; the creators seem very skilled at delivering a great story in the span of a single episode. I mean in many of the episodes irreversible damage is often done to a character or the house by the end (most of the time it's karma biting Eustace), but everything is fine in the beginning of the next.

Eustace was raised to be very materialistic because his father was a con man and his mother wasn’t ever a mother to him always comparing him to is dad and his brother Horace. He was always in his brothers or his fathers shadow and all he wanted was love. Courage the Cowardly Dog is one the very few shows from my childhood that I revisit every now and then in my 30s, even if it's short little clips like this.
@loganentertainment18145 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the reason Eustace was always mean is because he has a rough life. His mom calls him stupid boy, which would explain Eustace's saying "Stupid Dog" all the time. He did have a brother that was a jerk to him, and my guess is that his dad was never around. I think another reason why Eustace is a jerk to Courage is because he thinks Muriel is giving him the love that he never gotten when he was a kid. These types of moments should happen more often. Edit: Thanks for the likes. I do think Eustace is one of those characters that is misunderstood, and deserved better for how he was treated. Edit 2: I'll admit Eustace is a pretty mean dude, but there are some moments where he was pretty chill. He's just one of those characters that I wish we had more character development.
@rorysainsbury68163 жыл бұрын
I wish they could have reformed Eustace in “Ball of Revenge” instead of making him the villain in that episode. With his horrible childhood, I think Eustace is one of those villains who needs to be reformed (especially when you see he was actually nice when he was a child but sad as well). The villain of “Ball of Revenge” should of been his mother, Ma Bagge, as she’s shown to be worse than her son and was the reason why Eustace became a jerk, so it would have been more fitting if Eustace finally stood up to his mother in that episode and teamed up with Courage to take her and the villains down, and finally reform himself and apologize to Courage and Muriel for how he behaved and became a much nicer man (while being a bit grouchy at times). *Sigh* sadly that never happened, though it would be nice if they reformed Eustace in a Courage the Cowardly Dog revival (though I doubt we’ll ever get one).

It's really nice, Courage is actually a good, analogous way to teach kids about the dangers and threats of the world, but also the kindness and sincerity of people. Many of the villains are remorselessly evil, a good way to warn children in a subtle way that there are real dangerous people out there seeking to do harm to you, but it also has episodes like the squids, the tree, and this one which is also show pure generosity and kindness. It shows that even if the world is a cruel place, you still shouldn't give up on everyone because there is beauty and forgiveness to be found there. It's really nice, how nuanced and subtle the message is, yet it resonates with children who are still learning so much about the world and can be exposed to animation like this which has valuable lessons to be taught.

The hat is just a metaphor. The main purpose of a hat is to shield us from the sun. We know that Eustace had rough childhood. He didn't get any love from his brother or mother, so no one was there to shield him the rough childhood he faced. The hat symbolizes love and care and his baldness symbolizes how vulnerable and open he was to harshness and bullying and the heat of the sun symbolizes the rude childhood he had to face. So he really needed a hat to shield his vulnerable head.

As a kid i despised eustace & enjoyed watching him suffer, but now grown & rewatching the whole show, i understand why he became who he did. Though hes purposely made to not be liked, when you put together his flash backs of his youth & how his mother treats him you feel sorry for him. It teaches a lesson that you never know why someone acts the way they do if you dont know what was going on behind closed doors. Many times people like Eustace are the way they are because negativity & bitterness stems from a lack of love which is no more apparent than in Eustace & his upbringing. But also shows in the right circumstances some warmth & kidness is still there, telling another message that maybe someone just needs that, love & appreciation.

yeah true, as you get older you start to either understand or relate characters you used to dislike. a good example is Eustace, but another good example is Squidward. he just seemed pessimistic all the time, yet as kids we didn't realize he was basically a personification of the modern, boring and tiring adult life. we all relate to him once we grow up, and start liking Spongebob less.

I agree with the people who said that Eustace must be re-enacting a moment of kindness where he was given a hat for his burning bald head. Eustace always reminded me of my grandmother. She had this layer you couldn’t 100% get around, she was cold, just as she was bitter- backhanded by second nature. But every once in a blue moon there were these stories she’d tell of her childhood, some centered on her abuse, others about her hunger. That day as she watched in awe as my little brother ate so soundly she mentioned how the appreciative urgency of his eating reminded her of her little brother his age who had died of malnourishment. She wasn’t mean solely for the fact she was born that way- she was mean to survive it’s just she never got around to adapting. Sure that’ll never excuse the things she herself had done, but when people like her do things for others it truly puts into perspective what could’ve been if they hadn’t let their (in a way) real selves go. This show beautifully painted that aspect of coming from a broken childhood and what made Eustace mend into the person he chose to be.

As a kid, I laughed at his suffering for making things always hard for Courage. Grown up, I feel sad for Eustace. He came from an abusive household where he tried to meet up with his mother’s unrealistic expectations to be just as good as his older brother and nonexistent father, constantly reminding him he could never fill in his dad’s shoes (which were ridiculously huge LITERALLY). He raised Courage the only way he knew how. It doesn’t excuse him of his behavior, but it definitely adds more context into why he acts this way.

Eustace is only abusive because he's jealous of all the attention courage gets from Murial, and all the times he saves her. Eustace is jealous because feels unloved by his current family all because he was poorly mistreated by his original family. Not much is known about his father other than the fact he made a deal with a talking whale, so it's impossible to know what their relationship was like. Eustace's mother constantly verbally abuses him to this day. And his late brother Horace was a bully all throughout his childhood, Going so far as to hide his secrets from Eustace after his own death. In the Deer Hunting episode, we get a flashback of Eustace in his late teens/early 20s, Horace would constantly make fun of him and laugh at Eustace's misfortunes, calling him "Useless" since it rhymes. Eustace in the present wants to prove to others & to himself that he's a man, yet fails to kill or outsmart a talking Daddy Deer to wind up being on the recieving end of his own shotgun after getting his ass kicked. Eustace's life is a curse on himself because he knows he's living his own worst fear; And that fear is being a useless, unreliable, unsuccessful man who can't recieve recognition from others, because he knows he's done nothing to be proud of. He's a farmer who's land is 99.99% infertile, so he complains that he can't grow anything to provide for his family. In the magic tree episode, he's relentless in his attempts to kill it because its existence removes any reason for him to be needed. He's so caught up in his own failures & jealousy, that instead of wishing the tree for wealth, or fertile soil, or even a bountiful set of skills, he chops it down after admiting to the tree that chopping him down will make him feel more important. Despite being an angry abuser, Eustace is the most mistreated, abused, bullied, and misunderstood character in the entire show. And so he takes it out on Courage because it subconsiously feels like he's getting revenge on his brother, and makes him feel relief that he's not getting abused this time round. Wonder why Eustace says "What did *_I_* do?" Every time Murial hits him? He's most likely subconsiously referring to when he was abused during his childhood.
@jupiterdancer35903 жыл бұрын
I also realized that in Eustace in this scene is on the shoes of the guy who gave him the iconic hat he wears. When he sees himself in the mirror, he’s remembering the words of the man and acting as if he’s the man looking at his young self. That one memory of happiness and safety that he feels for someone who cared for him instead of belittling him. I also realized Eustace must’ve lost his hair as a child and with neglect and abuse, his family didn’t care about his physical health because they deemed him useless.
@pyregg15722 жыл бұрын
It gets even sadder when they don't emphasize who gave him that hat as a kid, hinting that the hat's previous owner was a complete stranger generous enough to give Young Eustace their hat. A random stranger was kinder to Eustace in that one moment than his entire family in his whole life. Let that sink in.

muriel was likely spoiled as a kid, but either had a good and happy home life or turned out wonderful in spite of not having one, while Eustace was *definitely* abused, if not physically definitely emotionally and psychologically. a lot of kids who grow up like that tend to be timid, whether they end up ok in spite of it all or turn cruel or messed up after they leave the abusive enviroment

the theory and theme goes was how diffrent ways a child is raised can effect them kid eustace was timid because everyone in his life treated him horribly hence he grew up bitter into "grumpy eustace" while young muriel was spoiled rotten by a likely loving dotting family hence why it was such a massive burden on courage alone to care for her but also likely raised her very well as a person hence being "kind muriel" as a adult.
@Trunks1stApprentice2 жыл бұрын
As sweet as this scene is, I can't help but laugh because even Muriel says that Courage making this happen was "doing the impossible". She MARRIED the man, and never thought this level of kindness was possible for him. It's like in the Demon Mattress and the Tower of Dr. Zalgost. Eustace tells Courage "she likes you", as if he and Muriel aren't married and don't have some kind of common ground.

art sol I'm sorry, what cartoons are YOU talking about? There are a lot of great modern cartoons that had a great run, are having new seasons, or are even just getting. People like you really need to stop acting as if cartoons from the 1990's and 2000's were the only time cartoons were good and that all modern cartoons can't compare. You can easily take the same complaint and apply that to the cartoons from the 1990's-2000's. I'm guarantee you there were many people who said that "Cartoons from the early 1930's-1950's were better than the cartoons airing now. These Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd N Eddy, and Courage cartoons don't hold a candle to Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry or Popeye or anything from Hanna-Barbera". The shows from that era were great, but they aren't the pinnacle of cartoons nor are they so great that they can't be compared or can't be topped by any cartoon from today.

Steve ross no literally these cartoons are better. Because they have a story a feel and passionate people behind them. You can’t compare cartoons like this or looney toons. To modern cartoons like gumball. Now I love gum all but it has no meaning to it. Lol compare the old teen titans to teen Tahitians go and tell me the difference 😂❄️

Lunden hudson "Gumball has no meaning to it" l I dare you to watch "The Hero", "The Shell", and most importantly the "The Choices" and come back and tell me "Gumball has no meaning to it". I dare you to even watch the episodes that focus on social commentary as well. There are many episodes of Gumball that have a point they would like to get across or something they would like to say. As silly as the show gets it does have a message at the end of the episode it is trying to get across. What you are saying is the equivalent of me saying Courage has no meaning to it despite some episodes having a statement to make. As for Teen Titans Go, even that has a meaning and a purpose: To be a silly satire and parody of superheroes. Whether or not it succeeds at that is up to the viewer but it does have it's voice and at times even has a statement to make. Granted it may not hold a fraction to what the original was, but the show does know it's place and has a meaning to why it is the way it is.

Steve ross ok then let me be sarcastic and say that modern cartoons are better then the old cartoons. Which their not. You can’t lie and say that cartoons network has fallen. And you can tell by the reboots. Reboots mean people don’t have any ideas to show for. After 2014 cartoonsnetwork went to shit.

Here I see a broken man. A man whose trauma had caught up with him, to the point that he is harming those around him. Between the bullying, the disapproving mother and the unknown father, he has no true identity of self. So much so that when a mirror is brought up to his face, he doesn't see himself. He is entrenched in the past. He is so disassociated from himself that he can't recognize the boy in the mirror, only the pain he feels. Because of this, he is hurt and removes the clothes from his own back (or head) to aid the boy.
