A Conversation that Spreads Light: Sree Narayana Guru by M K Sanu • Vallabhassery Govindan Vaidyar and T K Kittan Writer visit Sree Narayana Guru. • On 19 January 1928. • Reason of visit : to get permission from Guru to conduct pilgrimages to sivagiri. • Guru asks them the need of a new pilgrimage centre, as there are other sites for pilgrimage. Relevance of a new pilgrimage center : Only the upperclass people have access to temples, lowerclasses face caste discrimination > Guru Grants permission. • Yellow dress : dress chose by Sri krishna and Sri Buddha • Date : First of January, the Newyear day of the Europeans • Guru tells his disciples to observe ten days of abstinence and Buddha's five ideals of purity (Purity of body, food, mind, word, deed),and to wear yellow garments& practice thrift and discipline throughout the journey. • According to Guru there are eight aims/objectives for Sivagiri pilgrimage. They are- Education Cleanliness Piety Organization Cultivation Trade Handicrafts Technological training • First pilgrimage on : 1 January 1933. The most important point is that all the aims of Sivagiri pilgrimage leads to social development or upliftment 2. Curing Caste LAST MINUTE REVISION by Sahodaran Ayyappan (translated by Dr Ajay S Shekhar) Sahodaran Ayyappan : Revolutionary, social activist who raised his voice against all kinds of injustices in the society such as caste and racial discrimination. • Caste is a disease • Needs to be cured inside and outside • External Oinments - temporary value • Politicians may use caste disease: inorder to get personal and professional gain. Kelu by N Sasidharan and E P Rajagopalan • K Madhavan requests Balakrishnan to write a play about Kelu Nair, nationalist leader and playwright. • The writer is in the struggle of writing • While writing the play Balakrishnan meets Kelu in his imagination. • Kelu helps him to overcome his inhibitions and fears while writing. • P Kunhiraman Nair also visits the writer in his imagination.He asks tge writer to move away from the stage. • Conversation between Kelu and Kunhiraman Nair- showing mirrors at each other. They realize that none in the society understood them. • Last scene- Kelu’s home. Meenakshi shows her indifference towards his writings.. He feels defeated 5. Parting from the Path of Life by Cherukad Govinda Pisharodi (Translated by Siby James) • Childhood days of Cherukad • Matrilineal family system • Kunjammaman-head of the family. • Doesn’t send narrator to school. • Excuses- the child know everything, and the family have a lot of nephews and nieces to take care, so can’t afford an expensive education. • Real reason: he was carrying away money from family income to support his wife and children • Raghava Pisharodi visiting Kunjammaman: narrates the story (Rakhavan) • Enemies of a matrilineal family head-Efficient husbands of the women in the family and grown up nephews who bite back. About my Race: A Song by Poykayil Appachan (translated by Jessica Sudhir M) • Histories are not talking about the race of the poet • The race of the poet is the first people of Kerala but they are now marginalized • There was noone to write about his race. • So The poet decides to write a story of his race. • He is going to write how the first people of kerala came to called as wretched. • The poet asks the question- how long does discrimination continue? • The poem ends with a question to God. • "How can God allow this to go on?" 2. The Kuttippuram Bridge by Edasseri Govindan Nair (Translated by A J Thomas) • The poet Edasseri wonders at the marvellous bridge constructed across Perar. He is proud of the bridge. • The poet's attention goes towards the village-gramalakshmi. He considers the village as his playmate of childhood. • He realizes the damages brought upon the rural countryside by modern developments and mindless urbanization. • He thinks about the beautiful aspects of his village. • He wonders at the end weather the river Perar be transformed into a foul-smelling drain. Courageous Act by Anasuya Menon • Feature on Nilambur Ayisha • Nilambur Ayisha is a very famous theatre artist and social activist in Kerala. • She belonged to a very rich muslim family but had to face a lot of issues while entering the theatre field. • Ayisha's debut play was Ijju Nalloru Manushyan Aavan Nokku (1953) directed by E K Ayamu. • Faced attacks from orthodox people and fundamentalists from the Muslim community. • Ayisha's father was a patron of the arts. He allowed his servants to showcase their talents. • After her father's death, the family was broke. At that time Three people helped her- Kunhi Kuttan Thampan, Dr M Usman, Actor Nilambur Balan. • While performing She was pelted with stone several times and shot with an air gun but for her theatre activism wasn’t a way to make money it was a way go bring social change. She was very passionate towards her profession. • One day Someone slapped her so that she lost hearing ability in one ear. • These atrocities doesn’t blocked her from acting.. • Won many awards- SL Puram state prize, Kerala State Award • Acted in many films, old and new and is still continuing her courageous journey. 4. Vaikom Satyagraha: Struggle against Untouchability by K N Panikkar • 30 March 1924 -starting of Vaikom Satyagraha • Lower caste people were not allowed to enter Vaikom Shiva temple or use public roads near the temple. • The Satyagraha was initially taken to the national level by T K Madhavan • Gandhi's involvement • Many upper-caste organizations helping the movement • Sree Narayana Guru's words to his followers on the movement. • Gandhi meets Guru • Several prominent people participated in Satyagraha • Savarna Jatha under the leadership of Mannath Padmanabhan • 23 November 1925 satyagraha was concluded as the demands were accepted. 5. The Voice by Suresh Menon • Article on K J Yesudas • Every malayali loves to hear Yesudas. • Malayali's celebrate Yesudas in Kerala and abroad. • Humility, Simplicity and humble nature of Yesudas made him achieve such heights in life. • He is a God loving God fearing person. • In 70s and 80s he was criticized because of his dodgy accent. • Dodgy accent : incorrect or bad accent • The film Aalap in which he sang was a flop and Majnoon was never released. • These issues doesn’t effect Yesudas because his constituency was South India. TheAdversities:Personal, Professional • The attitude of Yesudas towards the denial of entry into Guruvayur temple - he dealt the issue without making it a chaos. • The attitude of the classical singing community towards Yesudas, a Christian singing classical music : They didn’t accept Yesudas into their fold.Years later he was accepted after receiving a ponnadai from Chembai Vaidyanatha Bagavathar. • The birth and family background of Yesudas- Cochin - father-Augustine Joseph(popular singer and stage actor)-his first Guru. • Faced financial crisis • His friends helped him a lot in the time of Adversity eg: the taxi driver who gave him money and Vaikom Chandran who suggested his name for the movie Kaalpadukal. • Days in Madras-poverty and hunger: Had to drink tap water, tighten his mundu to cure hunger. • Life in the car shed of Semmangudi: in return he used to wash the car of semmangudi : at that time couldn’t even dream of entering the house : later it changed. • His style of Singing : Method Singing, he uses his own emotions to embellish his music. • His opinion about new Sangeetha Sabhas. He says that today’s Sabhas are giving importance to money than music and explains an incident in a musical sabha where Yesudas paused his singing to chide the children running around. • Two contributions of Yesudas- raised the level of popular music using classical techniques- made classical musical accessible to common man through popular techniques • "I am like a child playing with pebbles on the sand with the vast ocean of music in front of me."
