Art and culture of romanticism and realism in the nineteenth century. An art history lesson from Niek Jongeneel, drawing and art history teacher.
At the same time as the explosive growth of the cities in the 19th century, the need to escape those cities and look for unspoiled nature and honest country life also grew.
This video is about the painters who tried to capture that and gradually discovered that the countryside was not as idyllic as they first thought. They became increasingly aware of the hard existence of farmers and workers. This led to a new art style: realism. Gustave Courbet was its most important representative.
