After 1 hour of sailing what degree of course we proceed and secondly do you take the wind effect similar to tidal effect or less effective than tidal effect? Thanks.
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 3 жыл бұрын
After 1 hour of sailing you need to do a new course to steer for the next hour. If you view the example it says work out how long the passage will take you and if sailing for two hours allow for the tidal drift for each of those hours.

At 4' 1" you put the plotter on the map saying 113 degrees is dialed in, then say line them up and draw a line but...line what up with what? I can'[t see anything lined up with anything. Are you just trying to get the 2 mile line from A at 90 degrees to your course line?
@mymobile5014
@mymobile5014 4 жыл бұрын
Then you join C and D and get a bearing of a line, but where did you get the bearing from? You say it's 357 degrees but where does that number come from? This is all too confusing for me.
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 3 жыл бұрын
You line up the grid on the compass on the plotter with a vertical or horizontal on the chart.
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 3 жыл бұрын
You need to work out how to use a plotter. go to westviewsailing.co.uk and sign up for the tutorial videos or check out the new Day Skipper blended learning course which we are about to start promoting on the westview website.

Thanks for the video. One question: How come you take into account magnetic variation before you deal with leeway? I have always compensated for current and then the wind, before calculating the magnetic course with the magnetic variation. /Stefan

Ah, perhaps the oreder doesent matter :)
@matthoad-robson7938
@matthoad-robson7938 3 жыл бұрын
@@stefanbergman4732 It does matter and this is a mistake in the video. It should be leeway, variation and then deviation. (LoVeD)
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 3 жыл бұрын
You are wrong, there is no mistake. It makes no difference whether you add the leeway before the variation or after as I did in the example (at 6'15") as it comes to the same thing. The important thing is to allow for the leeway before you see what deviation the steering compass has on this heading.
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter as long as you allow for variation and leeway before seeing what deviation the steering compass has on that heading

Is the first fix correct? .00N and .00E should be on crossed lines of long and lat......or am I missing something 😀
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 7 жыл бұрын
You are indeed missing something. The Lat at 46º19'.00N does not fall on a parallel of latitude line as marked on the chart as these are spaced 10' apart and run from .0' to .10' to .20' etc.The long at 005º.00' did fall on a meridian line. Had that Lat been 46º20'.00 it would have fallen on a line of parallel of latitude and you would have had the fix on crossed lines but the lat was 46º19'.00 so that is why we are on the meridian line but not the line of parallel of latitude.

Given sailing is almost never a straight line, how do you maintain that course?
@Westviewsailing
@Westviewsailing 7 жыл бұрын
You draw the course to steer onto the chart and then depending on the wind on the day you follow the course either by running straight down it. As you say this is unlikely. If the wind is coming from forward of the beam you will tack away from the CTS and then back to it and then away from it until you reach your destination. Or you may tack across from one side of it to the other if the wind is dead ahead. Momitor your progress against the CTS and confirm position either with the GPS or via 3 point fixes, single point fix and depth, transit and cross bearing, etc.

I disagree with you Sir. I think its more realistic if u had taken 6Kn from the starting position and not at the end of the tidal stream..Ur answer wnt be realistic had the tidal stream been moving in the same direction as the course to steer..be it against or for the ship..The 6kn shld be taken from the starting position and the line joining the 6Nm on the track and end of the tidal stream inficates the speed ro proceed and coutse to steer
