The two most useless things are the altitude above you and the runway behind you. Airspeed is your friend below Vne, or below Va in turbulence. Make sure your altimeter is set and external covers and control surface locks are removed before takeoff!

Thanks Courtney, great video. I agree with everything you show in the video flying your Quicksilver MXLII. However my Quicksilver MX with single surface wing and 2 axis control flies a bit differently than a MXL or your MXLII. While most of the examples you show are the same the MXL is faster and flies a bit different from most FAR part 103 "ultralight" air vehicles. The single seat Quicksilver MXL and MX here on my grass strip may look much the same but don't fly the same. The Quicksilver GT280 or CGS Hawk here are even more different.

I agree. The single surface and 2-axis Quicksilver flies differently. The main advantage with my airplane is that it can handle wind significantly better. One has to chose their mission!

Ultralights are technically limited to one seat. There are single seat Quicksilvers just like this one that don't require a pilot certificate. Two seats or more always require a pilot certificate.

I love flying ultralights. I have the license for ULs and for powered gliders and I would not prefer any to the other, _except for the Quicksilver_ . If you can, stay away from that construction, it is dangerous. The absolutely worst habit it has is that it increases its angle of attack if you reduce power. That is, you close the throttle and the nose goes up, reducing speed even further. Dangerous! All real aircraft do the opposite, so that they do not kill you when the engine fails. They just go down, maintaining air speed. And the version I flew had no ailerons; it had some pathetic spoilers instead on the wings. It was absolutely impossible to land that contraption with wind on the side. And the speed was indicated by some ball in a tiny plastic tube far outside you central area of vision. I flew the thing a few times, once had to land it on the parking lot in front of the airfield due to crosswinds, and found it one of the most difficult to handle aircraft I have ever encountered. Stay away from it of you can, there are simply better ultralights out there.
@stefanhennig3 ай бұрын
Just found out that there must be a MK I and MK II Quicksilver and that I flew the MK I. Stay away from that at all cost. My statements above might or might not apply to the MK II.
@CourtneyTakesFlight3 ай бұрын
How is it, after 350 hours flying a Quicksilver, it hasn't tried to kill me? I suspect you might not be the world's best pilot if you can't handle the ridiculously easy to fly Quicksilver.
@stefanhennig3 ай бұрын
@@CourtneyTakesFlight I am not the best pilot but I have never hurt myself. I told you, MK II is not MK I. The Quicksilver MK I I flew was later destroyed by a young pilot who had just made her license and was at peak training level, hurting her badly. It was a stall during approach, just what I warned you about. Take care, you flawless top gunner; the others, stay away from the MK I.

your life esp. depends on that elevator. any one of the other controls you can lose. hard to believe someone's still flying a two seater ultralight in the usa in this day and age.
@jamesengland7461 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by all of this? You want all 3 axes of control whenever possible. Why wouldn't she or anyone else fly a 2 seat ul in the US or any other country? I don't get it.
@choppergirl Жыл бұрын
@@jamesengland7461FAA rules that ended the Golden Age of Ultralights required you to get a legit pilots license (with all the costs involved) if you wanted to fly a passenger in a two seater (because of the weight over 254). This put a lot of people out of business who were teaching others how to fly with two seaters, and pretty much put the kibosh on the hobby and brought it to an end back in the 1980's because nobody could dual instruct any more. Two seaters became impossible to sell because they were kryptonite... unless you were outside the US where the FAA rules did not apply. So it's rare to see a two seater flying in the USA, imho. - If you lose aileron, rudder, elevator, or throttle, you can still fly the plane using the other three controls. Aileron and rudder are interchangable for making a turn, and elevator and throttle are somewhat interchangable for ascent and descent. That is, if your elevator is locked in neutral. If it's flapping about, you're screwed. Losing the elevator on an ultralight is what killed one of the Walmart heirs. You can lose the other surfaces, and even the engine, but you don't want to lose your elevator. At least that's my feeling about it. Well, you don't want to lose a wing either, so check those wing struts and wing root bolts.

You need some kinda license 2 fly two seats. She obviously has that. She's probably also a CFI herself. You need ALL control surfaces to be working properly and to assure that do a walkaround checking EVERY connection. She's very adamant regarding stall speed. Only place to be anywhere near it is at altitude. She typically flies a minimum of 1000 feet above terrain. Also notice that she has speed on whenever she's near ground level. Note that she makes NO turns until she has some speed and altitude.This girl knows WTF she's doing!

@choppergirl This 2-seat Quicksilver is in fact, a legal Light Sport airplane, an E-AB. A pilot certificate is required to fly it. This is the type of airplane often used to train ultralights because it flies and handles like a legal 1-seat ultralight.
