She is not crazy...I liken this case to the Chandler "Chaz" Halderson case, where he was living a lie and when his lie was about to be exposed, he murdered his parents. This is exactly what she did. To say she is schizophrenic or suffers some mental health issue is disrespectful to those that truly suffer from psychosis

If she were willing to go as far as killing her own mother in order to hide her failure and keep it from being exposed, one can only imagine the extent of harm she could inflict upon a stranger. Without a doubt, she poses a significant threat to both the public and society as a whole.

She is a petulant, spoiled brat. She never had to deal with consequence. This time around she did as she didn’t know how to handle it. Getting expelled from college is not a big deal. She could’ve easily fixed herself and went back to school. Maybe she can get a degree in jail. But she is not crazy. That’s why they found her guilty on all counts. May her mom rest in peace because nobody defended her mother. Her family want her to get community service and probation because they didn’t believe that she killed her mother.

I wouldn’t even call it a snap… she was level headed enough to answer the phone and pretend to be her mom to immediately cover her tracks and then come up with a break in story and break the window. Then pretend to her dad that her mom was on the phone, until he said the police were on the way. Then she suddenly becomes hysterical and says there was a break in. I think she planned this a bit. My sister was diagnosed with schizaphrenia (sp?) Not every case of schizophrenia are the same. Your sister could’ve been suffering from a dual diagnosis. Females usually don’t show symptoms until they are 18-20, sometimes 22 years old. It creeps up slowly and that’s exactly what hers did per her school reports. She was a top A student all her life. As soon as the voices start, she will also start failing in school. This is exactly what was happening with her. She has the tale tell signs of typical auditorial schizophrenia. She never told anyone, which is also typical. Without medication they have no hope.

@@brendamcdonall5798 I can't help wondering why she had so much fear about telling her parents. I'm not excusing Her, but I had a similar experience. My older sister was transferring to a new school for her higher education. My parents had received the letter and decided I should transfer to complete my lower schooling. I was terrified. I loved school and was quite shy. I had no choice as my uniforms and everything I needed were bought in a mad rush. I hated my new school. I was smallest in my class, but academically gifted. It led to bullying. I didn't tell my mother how I felt. It took two more weeks before my teacher contacted her. It all came out about how I missed my friends and teachers from my old school. It was my father who said to my mom "okay, she's going back". I went back to the school I loved and went to the high school 2 years later. Because, as you and many others imply, those plagued with mental illness are volatile individuals who can snap and murder another at any moment - mentally ill people just can’t control themselves, right? I would suggest you’re the one who should read about it. More humans without mental illness commit crimes. Vast majority of those with mental illness DO NOT hurt other people. There is no data to support the stigma that mental illness and threat/danger go hand in hand. It is that very attitude in society that causes many with illness to be ashamed, not to tell anyone, get help, or seek treatment. Thanks for keeping the myth alive. When she refused to move out of the dorm, instead of being coddled and enabled she should have been warned once and then arrested and made to leave. And the arresting officer could then decide whether to have a mental evaluation done on her. It might have saved her mother's life. For the parents to be left out of the communication loop with the school, particularly when their daughter clearly exhibited abnormal behavior, after paying for her education, is terrible. It's a double edged sword. If she stays in court freaking out crying and whatnot, she's also getting sympathy from the jury... And it's already hard for humans (for some reason) to convict a young "innocent looking" girl. So I think it's a balance for the judge not to taint the jury with her explosive crying too. If she's sentenced to a psych facility, it's not with a specified time. So no one can say she'd only get 6 months... A judge doesn't set that time. Personally, I think she can get treatment from prison just fine. I'd find her guilty.

I think Brenda working with gravely ill children made her extremely aware of the blessings her daughter was given. She had to be tough to endure the patients fright and parents sadness. She would have been angry to have been lied to,considering the sacrifices her and her husband endured to ensure this kid had the best advantages. Only to be lied to again and again. I believe she had had it,and Sydney knew the jig was up.

@oooh19 Absolutely agree that any changes can be tough, but in her mom's perspective, she saw ill children and their families go through the worst and for her daughter who was given the world didn't even tell her parents she was struggling, she just lied over and over again,I'm certain her mother would have helped her,but Sydney chose to betray her parents, the schooling cost, the housing cost, the car and insurance, the sacrifices the parents did, must have been disheartening to find she lied for months.

Even if someone is genuinely remorseful, the "tears" would have run out by now. Not because a person doesn't care, but because they would be emotionally tapped out/mentally exhausted. She spent her entire life crying. The body cam footage of when her father showed up on the scene, shows a young child pleading with her father to get out of a lie. It was practiced her entire life. Kids do what works. Sadly a child who learns how to manipulate her parents will continue to do so into adulthood, and have child-like tantrums when it doesn’t work. Child-like tantrums by adults are often very violent. I’m so sorry for her dad who is now without his partner, his love. And for the college administrators who had to listen to the the murder of Brenda Powell and forever have the memory of those sounds.

Love that Syndey had no trouble showing up for sorority meetings and pretending she's a student... but when it came down to actually taking responsibility and doing the work college requires, she's suffering and being picked on. This is coming from someone who earned 2 college degrees AND experienced academic suspension and was a student athlete (swimmer). It's not a surprise when you get kicked out. You're given a bunch of warnings, you know the time and quality of work you're putting in. College is incredibly transparent. The school and your professors offer tons and tons of help, THEY WANT THEIR STUDENTS TO SUCCEED! College is more than fun and parties. It's an adult choice that requires an adult level maturity. I didn't get it when I was 19-20 and I wasn't mature enough so I quit and worked. When I went back, I made the choice to try and I still wasn't ready and I flunked out. Was it embarrassing? Yes. Did I want to die rather than telling my parents? Yes. But again, MOST parents want their child to be successful and I can tell Syndey's parents would have done anything to help her get on her feet. And so did my parents! Were they mad and disappointed? Of course! But they did everything they could to help support me get back into school and succeed? Again, yes! Sydney Powell and Chandler Halderson and the like never gave their parents a chance to help them! They decided for them and ended their lives. Absolutely sickening and maddening.

It doesn’t work that way, unfortunately. A parent can see the student’s grades if the the student waives their privacy rights. It’s a FERPA release.

I don't know how Miss Gaffney stayed so poised. You can just see on her face toward the end of her testimony how hard she's trying to hold it together. What an awful situation. I kept thinking the whole time ... Sydney could have done this to another student. It's bone chilling to think about how long she was just hanging around on campus.

She's just trying to blame it on mental health. So that she doesn't have to spend the rest of her life in prison for stabbing her mother's 27 times. a person who's insane does not do all this. she knew what she was doing she knew right from wrong, she's knew that she could have stopped at any moment. or she knew that she didn't have to do this. she could have called the therapist, went to a hospital, and talked to somebody about how she felt. she killed her mother because she was angry she's a cold-blooded killer. I hope the jury finds her guilty on all counts..
