Very interesting development of a beautiful bright young woman in a close country community whose love was stirred by a worldly young man who recognized in her a beauty and intellect needing stimulation not afforded her in her home. Not a blazing happy ending but more a resignation for an ending leaving unanswered questions and possibilities.

It's the medieval term for a family gathering room, a multi use room for eating and lounging, as opposed to the formal parlor or dining room. We'd call it the great room.
