Friday morning 9:30 AM. ESPN reports that the story is true: "Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed Thursday when they were struck by a vehicle while riding bicycles, New Jersey State Police said in a release Friday. Johnny Gaudreau was 31; Matthew was 29. According to police, a driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee hit two "pedalcyclists," identified as the Gaudreaus, from behind while trying to pass an SUV on the right that had moved over to make way for the two cyclists. Police, who responded to the scene in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, at 8:19 p.m., said both Gaudreaus suffered fatal injuries. The driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with two counts of death by auto, police said. They said the investigation is ongoing. Both brothers, who were New Jersey natives, had been in the area to be groomsmen in their sister Katie's wedding that was scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia."

The Jesper Fast news means that the Jarvis extension will be announced in a few days, if that. I don’t understand at all why you would want to be first on reporting this without absolute certainty. If you’re wrong, you forever lose your credibility as a journalist, and any chance of making a career off of it. If you’re right, you’re very liable to be sued by the family. Vanessa Bryant literally won a case against TMZ for doing this with Kobe and Gianna.

It's not just the one reporter's career; the credibility of the entire industry is on the line. People are expected to be particularly sensitive around deaths, and when one journalist screws up, it makes the entire industry look bad. As example, look at the frenzy around the Ohtani free agency signing and the damage caused by one baseball insider reporting misinformation. It seems like ever since, people have been much more skeptical of what any of the baseball insiders say.

while the horrific news has since been confirmed, there are reasons local news will say “X-year old male died” instead of immediately running with “Jim Doe who lives on Blue Street” when events like this are current. firstly, it’s irresponsible to not make certain that the family of the people involved aren’t learning it from you as a reporter. You’re supposed to give ample time for the family to be notified. additionally, if you received bad info you could be causing unnecessary pain and panic in the lives of people who did think someone they loved died because you said it. you let official statements confirm things like this and then report based on the statements. you’re totally right Shannon, to hell with whoever “broke” the story.
