I would love to see a video on womens clothing. I have done some research on 16th century Irish womens clothing but it would be very interesting to see something about earlier.

Good to see this one again. I'd personally like to see more videos on clothes in depth. For example I am very interested in the léine. We're familiar with the fancy big ones in the 16th century, but the older examples are just long tunics with regular sleeves, right?

I'll have to check that out. I was looking at the léine for the 11th-16th century for this video ect over the summer. But most of it has left my mind right now and I would have to go back over it so am not telling you lies.

Great informative video thanks a million!! Do have to say though on the shoes that I think the effect spikes on your shoes would have in a combat situation would be minimal. Take rugby for example they have studs on their shoes but are still highly mobile and agile and while it isn't martial art fighting it isn't far off 😂 also I would presume they would prefer when possible to have that extra tiny bit of protection on their feet

As far as the 1/4 length pance goes I believe women used to find calf muscles attractive or they were a sign of your virility if you had good strong Calf! I might be way off but I read that somewhere!

I'm not from Ireland but i spent some time hiking there. And I like walking in sandals or barefoot and in short pants here in Central Europe as well. From spring to early autumn, when its say above 10° C - and I have friends who are much more cold resistant than me, I'm basically a city boy - I think it's better than boots and long trousers. Surely before the invention of Goretex and other convenient modern stuff. When you move through terrain, not on roads (and that's a must for country labourer or Irish irregular small-band warfare) you constantly walk through puddles, streams and mud. You are often knee deep in bog. Your boots and trousers are constantly wet and heavy with mud. It never dries. Trench foot is an ugly thing! You will be lighter and you dry quicker in short pants and barefoot while the tunic and short cloak keep your core warm. It's very practical for wet and muddy terrain in temperatures above freezing! :)

Great video and the personal experience helps as well. Just wondering when you walk barefoot, do you adjust your walking style to land on the front of your foot rather than your heal.

Me personally in my day to day life go from heal, but am fully aware of the front foot. If your pointing out something like that...
@TadeuszCantwell
@TadeuszCantwell 2 жыл бұрын
@@IrishMedievalHistory Yeah, when I did HEMA briefly and was looking at the stances from the period, at first they seemed quirky and at strange angles. With some practice and also thinking about using the front of the foot more the stances made sense and it was useful to visualize them during practice. I presume there are no manuals for Irish fighting styles and it's more experimental. Basically I was wondering if that style of walking was part of how people think of the fighting 'style', if that is even the right word to use.

Per the thing about helmets and "showing the face" I do SCA, and when I was contemplating fighting, I realized I hate that same sentiment- "I want you to KNOOOOOWWW who youre fighting (and whos kickin your ass)". But we re all very much exposed to Hollywood depictions (a very prevalent catalyst for "I wanna DO this") But Hollywood storytelling requires that we be able to *recognize* actor faces/characters, esp in a battle scenario, where if you arent used to a couple acres of hundreds of dudes who all look the same- you cant tell who anyone is. We dont live in an era where ppl are accustomed to recognizing even heraldry real well, even when...thats often the point of heraldry for fighters. Also, I had a very involuntary fear reaction to wearing a helmet, esp in a violent scenario. My friend put me in his grill-front so I could experience head-shots (also a reason I quickly LOST my interest in fighting)- that was when the thought "if my head gets bashed in- I want somebody to be able to SEE the blood on the back of my head". Subconscious of course, the *reason* we wear helmets, but it was a similar involuntary reasoning to why I dont ride sit-in roller coasters. "My head is in *danger*..." and in this case, somebody may not see it. We also live in an era of "detecting danger is all about visibility", and helmets are NOT as second-nature. Just driving motor vehicles, we are very 360 degree range-of-vision people on a daily basis. We see helmets as "big strong fighter dude, needs a head-tank" but again, its very Hollywood/portrayal-of-strength- until you realize how much it affects your vision scope. Im sure fighters of period were far happier to have their heads protected by a heavy metal bucket, as long as they felt they had a fair shot at seeing the bloke youre trying to hit/whos trying to hit you.

The leine that you are talking about, isnt that a later development? The Renaissance?
@Thorned_Rose
@Thorned_Rose Жыл бұрын
I know you asked this a while ago but I'll answer anyway. The Léine was all through the medieval period. The big poofy ('bag pipe') sleeves that you're probably thinking of as being uniquely associated with Irish léinte was indeed Renaissance (16th c) onwards. @@Clans_Dynasties Far too many mistakes to go through all of them. The first is at only 33 seconds. There is no such thing as "Irish Vikings". Vikings in Ireland yes. Secondly, there is no evidence whatsoever that they dressed any different in Ireland than in Viking countries....so why not look there for your sources? Finally, why would any self respecting Irishman (or woman) want to dress like the oppressors?
