If fiber raveling is an issue with the tarps from scissors cutting, consider “cutting” (melting) the tarps with a small butane torch. It binds the fibers together as it melts and prevents raveling. Enjoy your vacay!!! GNI!

You mentioned tarping your tractor until you get a shelter or shed. I have said it before, get a shed. I have seen at least three other channels and around where I live, those canvas shelters get blown away and destroyed. Sheds are more expensive but it will last. I will try to not harp on this anymore. But I know I will.

Last year I put nails trough the eye holes of the tarp and into the firewood, bending the nails over. First time I had a tarp ever stay put during heavy winds.

Good afternoon Chris. Enjoy your extended vacation/hunting. Your theory about black up is correct. The dark color absorbs the heat and makes the material warmer and the light color reflects the light and makes it cooler. That is why in the south many roofs are colored lighter to keep the attics cooler. Goodnight Irene.

try stacking the middle row two high, stack a row of logs on each side of the middle row length-ways, which will elevate the last layer on the two outside rows so you have an arching wood pile. Black tarp helps the wood dry.

Good Morning Chris. When we are covering big loads subject to wind, we use old 1x4s and screws (yet another use for the trusty impact driver) to hold things down. The beauty of this system is that even if you are working alone, you can get things pretty tight, even in windy conditions. It won't work too well on the wood piles with criss-cross ends (nothing solid to screw into), but I'd imagine it will work perfectly on the piles with standing pallets on the ends. Just a thought.

Cool video. I agree. Definitely cover the seasoned dry wood in winter. I personally like about a foot overhang on each side to keep any water drainage off of the wood.

I also tarped my pallet system (learned from you!) wood stacks last week before our snow storm here. We had a pretty dry, hot summer here and this is the first time I have processed green honey locust and mulberry and had it be ready to burn in the first year after cutting. I don't heat with wood or sell firewood so everything was split down to campfire size which helps also I'm sure. The locust and mulberry were 35-40% when processed in March-April and are now all under 15% some under 10%. You made me a believer in the pallet system stacking. Now I wish I would have built a wood shed to store the dry stuff.

I've doubled up lumber wrap years ago and it still gets wets. I do 2 layers lumber wrap then tin on top. Works for me

I use the big bale wraps from farmers who love to get rid of it, Plus you favorite color white like snow, If you want the toughest tarp, look up a pool guy replacing a pool liner. Lots of uses for that.

@@InTheWoodyard high wind rolling out canvas is definitely no good. I’ve had a partially attached canvas awning start to balloon and lift me off a ladder. Held onto the cover and frame for dear life. Exciting but not something to do often. Parasailing 🪂 freestyle is dangerous.

I do cover the firewood in the winter. Just so it is dry when delivering. We may not get a lot of snow, but we tend to get rain. I just use the cheap tarps or 6 mil.plastic if i have it laying around.

Good morning Chris. Go to HarborFreight and buy those 30 lb magnets, then cover your tractor with that tarp and use the magnets as anchors. I do this and it works great at holding the tarp in place. Plenty of metal to stick to. Do the same thing on my splitter. GNI

I feel like if you just have a small personal Woodward you should cover the wood when it rains or snows. Otherwise you get that gray discoloration on top and your wood doesn’t dry as fast. I’m in Georgia so it’s mostly rain for me. But by taking the time cover when raining and uncover when it’s clear my wood seasons in 3 to 6 months. And the wood maintains its natural color and just looks good. I use the top only covers for the 4x4 and 4x8 racks. Again, worth the effort for me.

In middle TN I do the same as you to keep my firewood dry and looking perfect. My well-off customers like their wood looking nice with a nice honey brown photo oxidation color. Gray and black firewood may burn just fine, but is very ugly stacked next to your two million dollar home.

You could get one of those pop up shedd covers for the tractor, pretty quick to assemble and spike into the ground for now, keep the snow off the tractor. I think Harbor Freight has an inexpensive one and they always have a sale or coupons, a "quickie" as they say LOL

When I was a kid the neighbor's barn got hit by a lightning and burnt down. Well that Barn was full of rats. They all ended up underneath our chicken coop. I kept getting yelled at for not feeding the chickens. So I snuck in there one night shined a flashlight on the chicken feeder all I seen was big fat rats. We use decon to get rid of them. Never hurt the cats or the dogs. On the farm.

Hi Chris, I think leaving “fresh” cut wood open to all of the elements is the right thing to do! When the temperature goes below freezing, the moisture will expand and open the wood (very slightly but enough) which allows more moisture too escape when the temperature rises in spring and summer. That’s my thinking anyway! I think you should get some tarps of your own printed. The people who fly over could read “In the Woodyard” 😀
