The problem with talking about engaging a system like the S400 is that it won’t just be alone in the middle of an open field. Itl have an entire network of smaller air defenses around it. Having short and medium anti air systems backing up the S400 make it significantly more dangerous as it’s much harder to directly attack.

Well like he pointed out their is a whole range of approaches to attacking the C400 which are also applicable to all those supporting elements which if they are busy turtling around the C400 to survive then they cant be covering the rushing by ground forces who will then have to also Turtle under air defense restricting their maneuver and strategic depth exposing them to all the Indirect mass fires he was showing at the end. This is to say nothing of the Entire network of supporting UAS and satellites supporting SEAD and the greater campaign. USAF has been using decoy Drone swarms in the 100s to overwhelm and spoof air defense sense the first Iraq war and probably long before, Azerbaijan replicated the tactic with Israeli help to great success against Russian air defense systems which you might have seen. Just spamming a bunch of cheap small loitering munitions that cost a fraction of even the cheaper Russian SAMs easily over whelm C400 and most of its support point defense.

well, Armenia had a layered air defense system and Az expoited the gap between the layers. Bayraktar was too remote for the infra-red SAMs to engage, but its prop engine was too cold for the Osa and Tor radar-guided SAMs to lock onto. S-400 will be hit with things too fast for it to engage, too small or too cold to detect. Considering that Turkey has finalized its purchase of S-400, any country that relies on Russian air defenses and has conflict with any country that's supplied by Turkey is going to get bum-fucked.
@JimCOsd553 жыл бұрын
A layered air defense can be a problem but you don’t have to attack the entire air defense system to overcome it. In the Gulf War, the US put a Marine Amphibious group off the Kuwaiti coast. So Saddam put his most powerful units, the Republican Guards nearby to take them on. While the US sent 8 Apaches and 2 Paveway helicopters to attack the thin picket of radar stations that Saddam had put around his border. picked just one part of the radar system to attack, punching a hole thru its radar coverage for follow on jets to attack thru! With armor and troops attacking the Republican Guards from behind thru this gap. 20 years later with newer drones and stand off weapons an attack will be different with decoys and more advanced electronic warfare added to the mix!

The thing is a little bit more complex. There is two AD systems in Russia (in fact it's a soviet legacy). The first one - Army (ground forces) AD (S-300V, Buk, Tor, Tunguska etc.). The purpose - protect ground forces no matter where they are, AD will follow them everywhere. The second one - Air and Space force AD (S-400/S-300PM, Vityaz/S-300P, Pantsir-S). The purpose - protect valuable objects (bases, cities, industrial objects). In fact, these are two parallel structures with own equipment, created to meet specific requirements. Just compare S-300V and S-300PS/S-300PT.

At the end a huge effort just to protect one site - for another site they need exactly the same a second time. To force them to do this you just need a couple of stealthy aircraft, which are not stationary but mobile and can be used around the globe. The money they spend on this stationary air defense systems is lacking somewhere else, since the air defense systems are only defense systems they can't spend the money on offensive systems, and countries like the US have reached their goal without firing a single shot

@@henrylima6974 They spent not that much money, because their defense budget is relatively small at all. A lot of their weapons system are relatively old, they may have much stuff but a lot is still soviet era stuff. Their most formidable systems are nuclear, but this are weapons of the last choice. In behalf of the stealth radar, it seems you haven't understood how stealth works. Stealth don't mean they are invisible - it reduces the RCS to reduce the detection range of the radar. A stealth aircraft can fly closer to the radar, and attack it with anti radar missiles from a closer range than a conventional aircraft. Stealth coatings are not really effective against low frequencies, so a radar with low frequencies can detect an stealth aircraft sooner or later. Radars with low frequencies however are relatively inaccurate, and not usable as a fire control radar. A fire control radar needs high frequencies and short wavelengths, but in this spectrum the stealth coatings are relatively effective. So even if you know it's something there, you can't attack it successfully because you can't track it with the fire control radar. Russia itself is investing in stealth aircraft, also China and Europe. There's no superior radar in sight which would make stealth unnecessary, the advantage can become less over time but it won't vanish.

You forget that interceptors can only independently track a target at a relatively short range. Air defense radars are also overlapped and can receive returns from another radar system. Hiding from one will make you visible to another. Also, when a search radar picks up a contact, the targeting radar will lock on so there is no would be no use to that. There is the issue with electronic jamming in that the radar return is near impossible to fake unless you happen to be sitting right there in the truck. Attacking from multiple directions is also an issue. Not only would another installation catch you, a search radar is able to do the long range navigation as well. The attack radar (high frequency radar) is only 100% necessary if it's a missile without onboard guidance. If it is a missile with terminal guidance, then the low frequency radar can get it within a few 10's of kilometers where it will do it's thing. It is pointed out that the system can engage multiple targets from multiple directions and considering there are different missiles, I have no reason to doubt.The detection range you pointed out is not quite accurate and many other issues with your strategies. Unfortunately, getting around the s400 or any comprehensive radar network is a task, even for a stealth aircraft. Remember how stealth works. That rcs is the lowest radar return assuming that you are facing directly at the radar system and presenting your least observable features. But radar waves are mostly deflected rather than absorbed and any other system on the area will put some heat on you. Moral of the story, it's never a good m day to be an attacking pilot.

Do you think, in the real war, the #Russians will place only one engagement radar looking only at one side? Off course, theyre not stupid to do so. Ok Perhaps, they can place 3 or 4 engagement radars looking at every side. The host said, the s-400 can be attacked by a low flying fighter plane, another poor assesment. In the real war scenario, does he think that if war is drclared between the US and Russia, then the Russians will let any aircraft carrier get near to its positions? Off course, big NO NO! Since the S-400 can strike target from around 400 - 600 km away, then just before any US planes take into flight from its aircraft carrier will be met with s-400s, then the Russians fighter planes will have plenty of time to meet US airforces in the air. This is a too simplistic video. 1.S400 is just a part of multi-layered air defence complex that is deployed to defend all strategic locations. S400 is just the outer layer ( till S500 take its place in coming years). It is backed up by S300( being replaced by S350) in the middle layer followed by TOR Bulk M3/M2 and Pantsir S1 at the closest range. They complement each other. How they co-ordinate with each other no one knows other than Russians. Its the most closely guarded secret. 2. Each S400 system has its own rudder set up. Multiple systems have multiple set ups to overcome the specific loop holes that you talk about. 3. Each air defence complex is backed up by extensive EW /ECM/ ECCM systems to blunt aggressor airforce rudder set up. Israelis have learnt it the hard way how effective such systems can be during their recent missile strikes on Syria. With russian help obviously, syrians have managed to neutralise 90% of the missiles and blunted the rest to miss their targets. Syrians have not even engaged their S300 because of agreement between Russia and Israel on its usage modalities. 4. All air defence networks are backed up by offensive ground based land and sea attack missile systems like Bal and Bastion coastal missile complex and Iskander missile complex to take out the launching platforms like carrier battle groups , enemy air fields. 5. Finally there would be air to air interceptors plus long rang ground attack bombers to complete the scenario. 6. This video would have made more sense had it used some other country using S400 as an example like China, Turkey, India who do not have such an integrated set up and the points made in the Video would have made more sense. Russia has the world's most comprehensive air defence network unmatched by any other country in the world including USA now and in foreseeable future ( China with Russian help is trying to develop something similar).
@overlordgaming7522 жыл бұрын
The closest is actually Israel in terms of air defense, not the US. The point of the video is to take a complex matter and make it simpler for people who are new to the field to digest and understand, rather than bombard them with information they don’t understand. You don’t come to the level of understand your currently at by watching KZbin, which is what cobalts viewers typically do, their new/base level enthusiasts. If your interested in the complex fight that is trying to defeat a system like this I recommend hypo ops on KZbin, hes recently made two videos, one breaking down. A realistic simulation of methods both would be using to defend/attack, and then a more podcast like Long discussion on the subject. You’ll find a distinct lack of Russian ECM/EW involved in the S400 battery, I’m unsure of why based on the accuracy of that sim, and his other two. Regardless, I find the end being the same, just different overall losses for the same objective. I don’t see it flipping the tables. They will dive into that in the pod cast. Great show of how The Whole things really comes together for both sides
@UptownDegree2 жыл бұрын
EW assets can help a bit but at the end of the day the only thing that tells you is how many birds are jamming you. The SAM radars still need to burn through the jamming in order to get a clear picture of the total strike package, not just the jammers.

Couple things to keep in mind, the first you did mention towards the end, they have not been used so all you are going on is guesses and what Russia -who hopes to sell them, say. Second in games, units or systems are roughly approximated at best. For the S 400 this is an approximation giving the games capabilities of an approximation. Sure, you can do that. And it does happen. The problem is that nobody has an infinite amount of systems. And so even if you can protect a handful of places with such a dense SAM network, other areas will be less protected. The less protected areas get hit, along with the SAM sites there, and now you have a dilemma. Either accept that you're going to keep losing that which is more lightly defended, or shift your assets around -reducing the protection of the highest value targets.

The data linking is fairly easy to set up for a static emplacement. Much trickier for mobile units.

what they need is a big data upgrade. this would slurp all the information from all sensors of all attacks to be analysed and improved on esp with regards to operator alertness. the pantsir attack when the guys were on a smoke break being one that comes to mind. so an AI operator would be a great addition to the capability of the system.

I'm pretty sure an S-401 can beat it.

Overall good video. obviously, it is hard to simply a very complex topic because there are many factors to consider both for offense and defense. One thing to think about is that air defense systems are usually networked meaning they will have multiple radar stations that are linked to providing data and they won't be close together. This creates layers to help maximize defense of a target.

Currently seeing a lot of footage of Ukranian guided Turk Bayraktar drones doing insane damage on Russian convoys that would indicate yes .... yes the S-400 can be "beat".

@@mikeseal3053 lol I could link you to plenty of videos on shady websites showing Russian military hardware getting smacked in Ukraine, even shows the after effects of ruskies in a lot of different pieces haha. I seen on today of, a 4k video of a stinger smacking a Russian attack helicopter at 200ft then nose diving into the ground. Safe to say they needed to use dental records for identification. Or countless Russian tanks with the turrets blown off.. now that creates a erm a real mess

Well, if someone decides to attack one of those sites S-400 designed to protect, then there's much bigger problems later on than defeating S-400 alone. Basically it's a declaration of war. Most of this hardware is a deterrent, although a capable one. All modern conflicts are low level where one side always outgunnes another. So, those who possess S-400, who can actually afford, are less likely to be on the loosing side.

Wait wait wait wait wait. Attack a military target is a declaration of war? Noooooooo. Do you think that maybe, juuuust maybe, a nation which is conducting such an attack is already aware that they're going to war?
