As a biomedical researcher, I think it's amazing to see how fast research progresses once enough funding is provided. In 2020 alone, clinical phase III trials have already started which test HIV or Ebola drugs (and might be successful to some degree), an antibody against SARS-CoV-2 has been developed and and vaccines are developed by over 80 institutions (I just published a video about recent COVID-19 breakthroughs). Last week, scientists also found out that SARS-CoV-2 is currently not able to infect dogs or lifestock but might unfortunately be able to infect cats. Great video, I'm enjoying it!

Wow, I have never so far, since December heard a decent understandable lecture like this. Brilliant work - you are truly helping those members of society that have some background on physiology and biology, although my higher education is more specific to Natural sciences as I majored in Botany and Zoology. And went on to an Honors degree in environmental science.but this was some time back, and you really help us understand SPECIFICALLY what makes this virus so dangerous, as well as updating us based on the latest research. You are damn brilliant and intelligent, thank you for sharing that knowledge with us in such a down to earth manner. You have a gift in teaching. keep going!!!! Because you made a difference to me way down here in South Africa, and I hope the rest of the world gets to see this. Thank you.

Hey ninja nerd. Great video as usual. I have to correct some of the molecular bio here though. When the spike protein binds to the ace 2, and TMPRSS2 cleaves the spike protein to expose the fusion peptide which inserts into the membrane, the virus doesn’t enter the cell vis endocytosis. It enters via fusion of the host cell membrane and it’s vial envelope and dumps it’s RNA into the cytoplasm. The second thing is the gene expression portion. You are correct when you said that the RNA will be initially translated into polyproteins first. But this is to create the replicate transcriptase complex which will include the rna dependent RNA polymerase. This replicas transcriptase complex then proceeds to transcribe the genes encoding for the structural proteins via a process called discontinuous transcription to produce the sub-genomic mRNAs which will then be translated into the structural proteins.

The putative 'L' strain has not been shown to be more 'aggressive' - the finding had nothing to do with disease severity, rather potential fitness. Even this is massively complicated (undermined) by epidemiological effects. The authors retracted the term 'aggressive' soon after publication to prevent just the sort of dissemination of misinformation seen here.

MadMike Foetwenny, thanks for the source material. I’ve been working with an outbreak of 120 confirmed by PCR cases, in a closed community in Texas. All my observations indicate that this virus is not nearly as bad as what I was told to expect. I looked at this data as a possible explanation, but apparently not, as I read through responses to the article to put it in context. It is an ongoing pandemic and I don’t know what the future holds.

i wish i would live to be a thousand so i could learn all the things you teach. i have a doctorate and certifications and have ceu's all the time (in fact, i'm in the middle of a course right now, so i can't check in as often as i would like.) i know a great teacher when i see one. you are one of a handful of truly gifted teachers that i have ever seen. your command of the subject is , well, let's just say i'm dying. thanks for doing these :)

Again this is quite an amazing and pure simple compilation of information about Covid-19. I don't think you find it anywhere else. You're a great teacher, you chose and present the content in a super pleasant way. Thanks for your videos they are as inspiring as informative!

This was great. I have been trying to keep up with the research but it's easy to get bogged down with the details. Watching this, I realized that what I had been reading didn't go completely over my head. The information was familiar but I still learned so much more. I'm a nurse so I have seen many COVID patients and am aware of our treatment protocols because we have seen patients with DIC, PE's and hypoxemia but it's nice to get a true break down of the pathology behind the treatments. Thank you!

Hi me again. I should have mentioned this in my first comment about your brilliant Covid 19 videos. You may have saved my life, and many others. I speak specifically for myself. When the outbreak started people didn't take it that seriously, being like "oh its death rate is lower than the flu". But quickly when the outbreak started in south Africa, the panic started, and people started to realise how serious this is.... especially its infection rate. But for me, specifically, you made me see how especially cautious I should be. I am a lifelong asthmatic, and unfortunately and STUPIDLY a heavy smoker (I know I'm an idiot) and 10 years ago I had a deep vein thrombosis in the leg (dude i was 23, didn't have a clue it could be that, i thought i pulled a muscle, i didn't have any of the usual symptoms such as redness in the area of the clot nor the swelling in the leg). I struggled to breathe more and more with a week that passed, which is pretty normal for me since the one thing I SUCK AT in life happens to be breathing, ha ha sorry laughing at myself silly me. and of course, asthma is unpredictable, so i thought i was just suffering from allergic asthma as well, normally blame pollen, or dust... so sometimes its worse sometimes its better. and one week later, i collapsed in the street. the clots had travelled to the lungs. I almost died, but was a close call as here I am. turns out I genetically have the thick blot factor or high clotting factor. they tested all the proteins involved and it proved that lifelong I had to stay on warfarin, which in itself is a dangerous drug. So this new light you have shed on the pulmonary emboli it can cause aswell as from the beginning knowing it is dangerous to those predisposed or compromised such as asthma age etc., just made me take that more caution. I'm so dead if i catch it, probably. so thanks to you I know to be so so cautious when going out. I am an essential staff worker, I cannot stay at home during this covid 19 pandemic,we are in our winter now and i work outside, day and night shift... and i am afraid, but i now understand better what to look out for. THANK YOU

Did not do anything to ease my fear but I do want to understand the enemy. Please make a video on treatment options and theories. I had Pneumonia 30 years ago and the event was unforgettable.

I love how visual you guys are. My OCD is dying for more than one white board to spread out the information a little bit more. That’s just me though. Adhd makes you get lost when there is a lot to look at in a small space.
