Cow goes down with milk fever

She calved yesterday. Found her this morning lying flat out but 1 bottle of calcium and she was back on her feet after just 5 mins. First thing she done after getting up was top search for her Swedish red x Holstein calf

Yes - milk fever, also known as hypocalcemia, commonly occurs after birth where the dairy cows calcium utilisation changes and more is taken from the blood to go into milk. The body cannot release enough calcium from the bone quick enough to compensate for the removal. Calcium is an important element for transmission of nervous impulses across a synapse. With reduced blood calcium, the transfer is not smooth and spontaneous firing and muscle contraction occurs.

For the people who don't know what Milk Fever is; it is basically the low level of calcium in a dairy cows diet. In which is more common in aged and jersey cows. I am very proud that the farmer injected I believe that 40% solution of calcium borogluconate in the Cow's Mammary system. As this refreshed the cow with more calcium as it used most from feed and from her bones. Also the reason why he put a halter over the cow is because if he let the cow on the ground she could have possibly gotten into a coma or death. Also why he put a halter on hi is just in case of bloating, which can cause a lot more problems if not cared properly. Plus It was just one man, It is very complicated to lift a 1,500 pound animal all by yourself and trying to help it survive. So people who dissed on this man for act of saving this cow should really do some research.

I found some studies that say maximum safe rate of intravenous calcium borogluconate 40% is about 17 -20 mililitres /minute(33ml/min of calcium borogluconate 23%) ,for a normal 500 kg cow. A vet told me the cow can suffer carrdiac arest if given to fast!!!

I hardly know anything about cattle but being a mammalian female I understand lactation and obviously this cow has been down for a little while so she's been unable to feed her calf. When me and my infant son would sleep I would wake up in the morning and my breasts would be so full that they would be 4 times their normal size and if you've ever had children or breastfed you wouldn't make such ignorant comments :D

Always scary ! Very glad she made it. As kids in and around our farming community it was part of our upbringing to keep an eye on the livestock and notify the families when something was wrong or just didn't look right. Especially February thru May in our neck of the woods. Time is not on your side in cases like this, and good milk cows are not cheap, either.

milk fever occurrs because the cow lacks magnesium which is needed to strip calcium from the bones and transported through the blood stream to the udder.....animals cannot store magnesium so they get it from foods daily........during winter grazing, the grasses lack magnesium content so farmers will add it to the feed or dust it on paddocks

About 1 1/2 bottles in, her breathing changes and pulse quickens. This is when I stop. Amount wise, I judge by the cow. I also allow her to get up on her own, making sure she has support as to not flip flat on her side again. Only takes a few minutes to kick in. Congrats on the successful treatment however.

I would go about this completely differently. I would roll her up on her side, put a halter on her and tie her head to her hind leg. I would make sure the calcium is 101.3 degrees. I also would punch a bare needle into the jugular, allowing some blood to leak, showing me I have a clean entry. I then invert the bottle to start slight drainage, then attach the tube to the needle. I put one bottle in first, keeping my hand on her jugular and watching her breathe. Repeat using other bottle. At
