13 Years later and still the best most informative video on how to do it. It is excellent to listen to a professional actually explain what and why he is doing it.

I really dont understand how people can comment that this is too complicated???? This video spoonfeeds you step by step how to tie it and its far better that timber hitch. Wont come loose and have to be reset.

One of the knot behavior characteristics of the timber hitch is that it could come loose when the anchor is pulled towards the tail tucks.

This is the correct way to tie a cow hitch for a block. I tie it opposite or upside down this video if used for a lowering device (upward force); the hitch sets better.

I wonder if you can use this to structural columns on rooftops for window cleaning if there are no permanent anchors

Excellent just a note a lot of Knots look very similar . The cow hitch resembles a clove hitch but because of the bend in the Rope they are different ! Just saying I am a tree worker ;-) and was Paying attention, in great detail .

jo JO the girth hitch and clove hitch are the same except one of the two bends are backwards

I notice, before you tuck the tail out of the way, that the loop on the left can be brought over the whole 'better half' assembly when no tension is applied. Is that correct? And if so, does this not present a risk?
@ecospider5
@ecospider5 2 жыл бұрын
I am going to agree with you, the loop of the cow hitch has to not loosen and drop over the Better half hitch he used to finish the tail. I think this is why he made sure the tail went to the right and then tucked under the rope on the right. A normal cow hitch just leaves a long tail so this is not an issue. But in this situation the tail has to be kept away from the rigging so the not becomes a little more technical.

@@ecospider5 Thanks for confirming. Yes , the fact that tension needs to be maintained and that the tail needs tucking under the rope makes sense.

Yes. A timber hitch should definitely only be used when there is constant tension. Like a guitar string. Unless you want it to unravel.

lol ISA hole industy is about work safty.... and every arborist wears there hard hat as a safe pratice.... it is often dead wood, knotted limbs loose limbs, personal equipment come falling directly above you...its not gonna work if you dont have it on .... lol every real arborist will stress wearing your helmet during practice/training....

Justin Reed .. Im all about safety and worked allot in oilfield where safety is insane. But we dont have to wear our hard hats at a first aid course.

+IKnowYourCommentIs maybe because there wasnt a unpredictable tree above you at all times... like i said its safe work pratice... its a simple guideline that keeps us safe... 9 out of 10 head injurys happen while hard hats are just out of reach... this industy has a particularly higher risk of falling objects even during pratice we are under the same risks as we are in daily work situations.. i guess considering your misunderstandment its something only an arborist can foresee... climb a tree with alot of dead limbs an you'll find out the hard way....
