I find most reviews useless as people haven't owned the item long enough to really comment on its value. Just enough to get the idea. I'll echo the comments from others about this being one of the better product reviews on KZbin. Too often, video reviews consist of a product unboxing, and a parroting of the manufacturer's product specs. The purpose of the video is essentially a shameless and desperate attempt to drive traffic to an Amazon affiliate purchase. More often than not, these videos offer zero insight into how these products perform in the real world, because the "reviewer" hasn't even used the the product. Your video on the other hand, is actually useful to prospective buyers. You covered all the important points. You discussed features and specs, but also provided an in depth demonstration of the product in actual real world use. Furthermore, you offered some very useful information showing how to clean the pre-filter and the sensor. You also discussed the effectiveness and long term performance of the product -a rarity on KZbin reviews. Very well done.
@Bootstrappin4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Everything you just wrote is exactly what went into my thought process on this one. It's a rare cross between the manufacturer's longevity vs. still a relevant and popular product 3 years down the road, which is why I can never make a successful smartphone review video lol.

Best review i have seen on that thing. Instead of a salesguy that looks like he is straight out of the brady bunch, a regular guy, telling you how it is, with actual long term use description and a how to, "in the field" explanation of how to clean and use the machine. Thanks for that! I bought the purifier 2 weeks ago and was a bit unsure of wether or not i used it correctly, found your video, watched it and as a result of watching your video, am sure of how to use the air purifier now. They should be making all "how to" and "review" videos like your videos. Im sure, all these companies would make a lot more money that way. By being honest for a change. Thanks again

Oh, wow. When I was comparing it vs the winix 5500 to purchase recently, I didn't think about it gathering dust around the intake and enables particulates to get trapped around the ring. Which would have been a deal-breaker and am really glad that I got the winnys now. Yes that is plural, I bought two of them and am really liking em so far. I was torn between the two because the coway is also an excellent product and both have their advantages, but chose these for the fact that the carbon filter has pellets rather than sprayed on a textured mat like the coway.

Firstly, great job going into detail, told my landlord for best price to performance to get this air purifier and the filter cost isn't half bad either. You have to press that watts button a second time on your kill a watt (which I also own). Fans like air purifiers use require that VA watts (as listed on the Kill A Watt manual) to be accurate, switch to VA and that Coway till come close to it's 77watt max power draw as listed on the manual. Thanks for the review, it's cool to see someone go into detail. "The actual power for the fan, lags the voltge, and as such, it no longer is called Watts any more. Now it is call VA or VA.R". Could just add annotation with the Apparent power - The combination of reactive and true power measure in volt-amperes (VA) is... I learnt about reactive power via my apprentice electrical schooling, it is caused by the voltage being out of phase with the amps so Watts is not accurate, utility companies in Canada when they added the digital power meters it read the actual power and many people suddenly received much higher electricity bills.
@Bootstrappin5 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct about VA, reading 2 "watts" off an electric motor should've raised a red flag for me.

I have a Winix 5500-2 and it’s also an excellent air purifier that is pretty up to par with this unit. Though the Winix has a better carbon filter that is pellet based which is better at filtering odors and gases. The PlasmaWave as I will say is actually a better ionizer that emits dual polarity ions that create hydroxyls which breaks down pollutants rather than shooting them down from the air by making them heavier. It also doesn’t produce any ozone, there is a video on KZbin that shows this

Again, thank you for your reply to my question. It was so helpful, thoughtful and thorough. Now I have set up the purifier, though not yet the co2 detector as you had suggested. I wanted to see if I could register any difference the purifier might make to our apt air.. Because the indicator light came on blue and stayed on blue, indicating that there is not pollution, I imagine it is not detecting any pollution. On eco mode this machine is quiet and seems only to use energy for the blue light. Also, to my distress, I find when it runs it gives off the unpleasant smell similar to that of the inside of an airplane. This makes makes me wonder what this machine, of all man made materials, (plastics of different sorts I imagine) might itself be off putting into the atmosphere of my little apt. already plagues, apparently with CO2. :( If you have any thoughts I would love to read them. . . items made of our polluting technology, using our polluting technologies to make them, purported to clean the pollutions they create. . . I am not at all sure today. Thank you.
@Bootstrappin5 ай бұрын
In time, it should air itself out. And hopefully you didn't repeat my mistake of forgetting to remove the plastic wrapping of the filter inside the unit. I would like to stress an important distinction - I'm assuming that you're talking not about CO2 (carbon dioxide), but CO (carbon monoxide). Monoxide is deadly, so you should definitely be aware about the CO levels inside your home and keep the detector running. Also, the blue light on the Coway will *not* indicate whether there is CO present in the air - it can't detect gases, only things like dust and particles. I definitely hear you though, a unit designed to clean the air should not have any odors. It has been a couple of weeks, how is your situation now?

So, I ended up buying one of these after I watched your review and read a bunch of others, and I love it. Right out of the box, it was great. The one thing I noticed after-the-fact is that it has a Prop 65 Warning. Did this ever give you pause? I mean, I know basically Cali has determined that everything causes cancer and so we should all be warned accordingly, but certainly not every air purifier has this warning. As I'm thinking about buying a second one of these, I wondered whether you'd weigh in on this as a 3-year user. Thanks!
@Bootstrappin5 жыл бұрын
Point well taken on a product that is supposed to be good for your health. The problem with Prop 65 is it encompasses over a thousand substances, and it doesn't really say how much of said substance causes cancer, and how you'd be exposed. For all we know, we'd have to *eat* three Coways to risk cancer. Cali punishes severely for missing the label, so many manufacturers just slap it on to be safe. I'm not worried about it, the benefit of filtering out pollutants heavily outweighs the low risk of some Prop 65 substance that I'd have to put in my tea daily for two years before I'd develop a problem.

@@Bootstrappin Thanks for corroborating my initial opinion. That if I were planning to eat it, or perhaps wear it right next to my skin, or pet its bright white casing all day long, maybe I might be at a higher risk. But then, just the regular ol' unfiltered air kinda has a Prop 65 warning, too. Lol. Glad to have your take, humorous as ever.

I wanted this until I saw this review. I hadn’t realized how difficult it is to clean. Interesting that it has the exact same sensor as the RabbitAir MinusA2, which I have and is much easier to clean than this one appears. I’ll just have to get another RabbitAir, the extra filters and the ability to hang it on the wall make it a better one for me.

I am guessing the odor light means the dust filter needs to be washed? If I hold the button to reset that, does it affect the counter for the HEPA filter too?

Thank you, I so appreciate this video and still lack clarity about carbon pollution. Does this air purifier clean carbon pollution? We live in NYC, over the street and just one flight above the street. At one point the city required carbon detector in each apartment. Our land lord supplied ours but soon the detector's alarm would continue to sound, in our front room, where we were sleeping until we finally removed had to remove the detector. As there was nothing we could do about the carbon from the passing cars below our windows and after making calls to 311 and the Fire Department no solution was offered to our problem of what to do if the detector told us we were possibly being poisoned by Carbon. . .You see, not a nice dilemma. So Will this air filter clean Carbon out of the air? Thank you!!
@Bootstrappin6 ай бұрын
Sure thing. Are you talking about carbon monoxide? If so, this is indeed a very tricky dilemma. According to some research I've done, an air purifier CAN reduce trace amounts of carbon monoxide. Supposedly the combination that is required for monoxide capture is both a HEPA-13 filter, and a charcoal prefilter. This Coway has a "True HEPA filter", which filters up to 0.3 micron particles, but HEPA-13 goes a step further with 0.1 micron particles. I found this purifier which has those particular qualifications: amzn.to/4e5O61V Getting poisoned by carbon monoxide is a serious and potentially deadly matter, and I can see how it might be tricky in your scenario. Whose responsibility is it? The landlord's? The city's? The Fire Department? The EPA? Everyone sitting in traffic? I sympathize with you. My suggestion, try the filter I recommended or something similar, and run it while the Carbon Monoxide monitor is plugged in. If it solves the problem, great -- just be sure to regularly replace the charcoal filter, because it's efficiency goes down with time. But if not, I really don't know what to say (and you can probably return the air purifier) - try getting air from somewhere else in the building, like a hallway, using a fan? Install fans on the window to blow air outside, instead of inside? Or move to a higher floor. It's not easy. I hope this helps, and let me know if this works, I'm curious how it goes for you.

Having done my research and waiting for a price drop, I snagged this baby yesterday during Amazon's Oct. Prime Day at 33% off. I want to thank you and let you how much I appreciate your providing this tutorial! Got a question, however, for which I've found no definitive answer - some say yes, others no - as to whether or not it's ok to plug this device into a 3 outlet surge protector power strip shared by a table lamp rarely turned on and a SONOS surround speaker. I've maxed out the wall outlets in my studio with appliances, so unless I have another installed by an electrician, this is my only alternative. I do have a flat, wide, heavy duty utiltity extension cord I could utilize, if that it makesa difference. Any thoughts or advice ?
@Bootstrappin2 ай бұрын
@@robertrichman6873 glad you found my video helpful! Why are they saying not to, are they claiming it might overload the strip and/or outlet?
@robertrichman68732 ай бұрын
@@Bootstrappin Something like that. Didn't expect such rapid a response and added that I have a 3 foot heavy duty utility extension cord I could use in between, but from what I can glean, it seems to me you're questioning why anyone would suggest that it wasn't OK to plug it into that strip. I did too.
@Bootstrappin2 ай бұрын
@@robertrichman6873 gotcha, OK. I'm going to ramble for a bit because I've spent an extraordinary amount of time calculating loads and ratings in a previous career of mine. So -- going on that assumption you mentioned, yes -- generally not great to overload a strip on an outlet, especially because if the strip is too long or not heavy duty enough, the resistivity goes up, and the cord itself can become a fire hazard. For example, a regular outlet can supply 15 amps. Cool. Then you got a cheaper extension cord that can only muster up to 10A. But you plug in a toaster and space heater, that 10A cord could catch fire because the circuit breaker would never trip. But I don't think that's true here. You said you got a lamp, SONOS thing, and the Coway. The SONOS probably can't draw more than 2.5A (according to a quick Google search) when absolutely cranked, the lamp is probably no more than a 100W incandescent or 0.83 amps, and the Coway as I measured it was 38 watts, or 0.31A. In total, your surge protector probably won't see more than 3.64 amps, which is well under any surge protector rating I'm familiar with (and extension cord). Long story short - the next time you wonder if it's safe to use an extension cord or surge protector to feed multiple devices, you just need to know a few things. What is the maximum current rating of your strip or extension cord, and what are the peak power requirements of the things you're plugging in? You can find that information on the back of practically any device, and it'll say like "MAX 100 WATTS". Because Power = Current x Voltage, to find the current you divide Power by Voltage (household voltage). 100 watts / 120 volts (AC) = 0.83 A in this example. Then just tally it up and you get a decent ball park estimate. It does get hairier the LONGER your extension cord is because like I mentioned, then you have resistivity to deal with as well that can effectively decrease the safe current rating, but as long as it's a very thick gauge, it can generally handle the current. If an extension cord ever feels very hot to the touch, chances are it is overloaded, that's also a decent indicator.

Does this help with odor? There were some critters that died in the attic. They cleaned it up and then installed some new insulation. I suspect; 1. Either some critters still remain up the attic, or 2. The new insulation they put in smells a little. Now, there's some mild smell in the room which is either of the above two reasons. Will this air purifier be able to remove either of these odors from the room? Thanks!
@Bootstrappin2 жыл бұрын
Having experience with a very similar situation, I can tell you this - while it does have a charcoal filter to deal with odors and is certainly effective in reducing them, it is preferable to remove the source of the odor. And when said odor is basically absorbed into wood/materials, the only effective method I know of that can permanently get rid of a smell is ozone or ozonification. I have a video of me dealing with a smell in my car using ozone, but because it's your house, you'll need an industrial sized ozone generator - which I think a professional odor removal company would use, you'd just have to leave the house for 24 hours since ozone is toxic. In short, depending how strong the smell is, the purifier may be good enough to make it not as noticeable, but because the smell is always there, you'll probably catch whiffs of it, particularly on hot days. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGfCo6J4dreIrpI
