The thing about Cowboy Bebop is, how it hits different depending on when you watch it. First time I watched it as a teen, there were some parts where I teared up. But. When I re-watched it after 15 years... I strongly reacted to completely different scenes. And they hit HARDER. The infamous "egg eating scene" (you'll know it when you get to it) *completely* broke me this time.

There's plenty of scenes where Jet and (especially) Faye let the mask slip a little, that's a rare scene where Spike does.

Bebop is a heavy show. It has plenty of lighthearted moments, but it explores humanity so well and the fact that the maim characters are bounty hunters allows them to see the struggles that people go thru and how those struggles impact them and the people around them.

It's also a show that conveys so much of its story wordlessly. In fact, the way the characters talk directly with each other is often completely in contradiction to how they feel about each other but would never say out loud. If you watch the way the main cast talks to each other, it's very unique compared to other fiction. It reminds me of a mom having a conversation with her son while they're in separate rooms and she's primarily focused on cooking dinner while he's primarily focused on playing a video game. Or conversations when your face is buried in the computer screen, and the person you're talking to is leaning over your shoulder to stare at the computer screen with you. They're almost never talking to each other face to face, and often they have their own thing they're doing at the same time as they're talking. It's really subtle, I only noticed it because I was trying to figure out why it felt so jarring to me in the Netflix live action adaptation to see these characters sitting in a restaurant booth together and talking to each other like Seinfeld characters, but it's certainly a very deliberate choice on the part of the team that made the original series. There's so much to this show that you can feel without consciously realizing it's there.

I'd describe Faye as a "femme fatale wannabe." She's trying to be the sultry, super capable badass and you see it in how she acts calm and collected, puts up the sunglasses, and drops her voice when she thinks she's in control of a situation. But she's not mature enough and not quite as capable as she thinks she is, and she'll start screaming and getting emotional once things take a bad turn. She's a lot more fun and relatable than a character that is purely on one end of that divide or the other.

Spikes hung over stare down with the egg he just spilled into his lap while theres a bar fight going on behind him has got to be one of the funniest moments I've seen in anything ever. Also just the concept of space truckers is hilarious in and of itself.

The movie takes place between episodes 22 and 23 in the continuity. You don’t need to see it in that order, but that’s how it fits into the story as per the writers. Also: Oh boy, episode nine!

Spikes fighting style and philosophy (being like water) is Jeet Kune Do, the martial art developed by Bruce Lee. Other nods are him recognizing the "way of the dragon style nunchucks in ep 2 and the way he hopped around when fighting Asimov in ep 1.

Speaking of Faye. It should be noted that her Japanese vibe actress is Megumi Hayashibara who was THE premiere female voice actress of that time. Said actress was most often played the lead female of most shows such as Rei Ayanami for example.

Definitely one of the saddest episodes (8th). Its absolutely crazy how much emotion can be packed in just a single episode or a random relationship that lasts so little but can be so genuine. Marvelous. Damn the feelings! You guys captured the true essence of the series in this episode! Its all about the impact each human being can leave on to others. Easy come, easy go. See ya space cowboy Rocco.

Episode 8 is my favorite. I think I connect with the side of Roco that wants to be cool like Spike. Being a character that I found easily relatable (in some ways), when he was suddenly shot, that was super impactful. There's still so many amazing episodes to come! I can't wait to see you react to episode 20.

Great reaction, guys. Josh calls out the dub, and Bebop is widely regarded as one of the best dubs of all time. Over the years, I've gone back to the original, as Megumi Hayashibara's Faye and Wendee Lee's Faye are almost two different people. Mehgan is pure joy in this one, btw...all the low "oh!"s every time someone gets snarky, and her joy over the animals is great. Can't wait to comment on 9+10; your guy's reaction to Jet's episode was just...chef's kiss!

it's nice to see people who actually have the emotional maturity to correctly get what this show is about and understand the story it's telling. So many are so quick to chalk it up to 'funny action in space and cool vibes'. It's so so much more than that. The action is fun, the comedy is funny and the vibes are immaculate but those are not the reason why this show is still so good and beloved 25 years later, imo. It's the story and characters and the inherent humanity of it all that connects with a viewer willing to actually engage with it and willing to let it resonate. I hated this show when I first watched it at 13 y/o. I thought it was slow and boring lmao but the older I get the more I get it and the more I get it the more I love it.

The stuff you guys talk about here, particularly near the end of the video, are the subjects that would go completely over your head when watching this as a teenager. Then you rewatch as an adult, and you discover a completely different show. If you think you're watching a sci-fi Western about space bounty hunters, you're not watching Cowboy Bebop.

It's really cool to see you guys watching through this series for the first time, it was one of the first anime I ever saw growing up on adult swim, and in my personal opinion it's one of the best anime of all time, so it's neat to see your perspectives on it with fresh eyes. I'd love to see you guys check out Shinichiro Watanabes other shows too, Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy, they all have completely different vibes from each other, but those are two of my other all time favorites, and they don't get nearly as much love as Bebop

The director describes the world of Bebop as a world os Statelessness, rather than Multi-nationalism. Each individual is just someone drifting through the cosmos, and the diversity of people in this show reflects that as everyone has become atomized instead of being bound by a larger social identity.

I have a really hard time figuring out how shut off I should be with people. I work with about 50 people and most of them would rather talk to me than work which is a problem because I need to get something done at some point while I'm there but at the same time I don't wanna abandon people who legitimately need help. I also don't want people to feel like nobody cares about them but I'm not being paid to be their therapist either. I'm always worried that I'm too far on either side of that line. I think I'm doing a pretty good job of balancing between the two, I hope.

If you havent seen it i highly recommend checking out bruce lees interview wherehe speaks about "being like water" the dialouge is highly reminiscent of the scene of spike training roco. Plus bruce lee was just a legend in his own right and you can see it in his performances and the way he articulated his thoughts calmly and precisely. I have always adored that little inspirational detail of spike's.

Episode 8 must not be watched alone or without reaching episode 10. Let’s call it an emotional trilogy. Episode 8 brings you down but 2 episodes later & you’ll feel emotionally cured. I know I was after the crew arrived in Jet’s hometown. Sorry for the late warning guys. You’ll be alright.
