Imo, very few animes can pull off a dub. Cowboy Bebop is one of the few that does this flawlessly, to the extent that I actually prefer it. I just think the voices fit the characters more, and from a more practical point of view, since I speak fluid English and not a single word in Japanese, it takes way less effort and doesn't bring me out of the immersion when I actually fully comprehend what they're saying. Usually dubbed anime just sound silly to me... But Cowboy Bebop is one of the few stars out there. Definitely my favorite series of all time, not just compared to other animes!

The Gundam franchise can also be said the same for this. Personally I prefer watching Gundam in English not only because of nostalgia from watching Wing and the original 0079 on Cartoon Network, but because I feel that some battle scenes are best portrayed in English as if it was a Hollywood movie. I think even the best dubs are prone to have that "dub feeling" if you know what I mean. Cowboy Bebop is not only one of the most natural feeling dubs, but also some of the most natural feeling voice acting I've ever head.

Cowboy Bebop was the first anime I watched from beginning to end. The dub was really good at easing me into the whole anime scene. The characters in the dub have way more variety in terms of voiceover compared to the sub imo, although to be fair I've only watched less than half of the series in sub. But it just kills me hearing Faye with a typical Japanese "girly girl" voice in the sub..

One of the thins I appreciate about this series is the awesome VA of both sub and dub. The women seem like women rather than 9 year old Lolis, I said it. And it made sense because they were drawn, and behaved like more mature women.

Still choose sub. Don't get me wrong, the dub is good!, but it still sounds, *feels* like a dub, like somebody replaced the original voices with others. A perfect dub should be imperceptible, to the point that it almost feels original and you can't imagine it being any different, kinda like the spanish (mexico) dub for Dragon Ball, which is virtually perfect. This is not it for me. But it is still good, yes.

Both are good. This is pretty impressive for a dub but this still doesn't sound the way most Americans speak. Still unnatural sounding. Not sure when this will change for English dubs. I also think the Japanese version flows better. That's just my opinion. I wouldn't be so opposed to watching this dub but I'd still probably prefer the Japanese audio based on this scene.

I think the only criticism I would have for the Dub in this situation is that Faye over "gasps". Still coming out of the era where people felt like you had to emote everything the character does in the dub and that's where I feel the Original is a bit better. Otherwise, they're pretty great, both of them.

Lol, nice to see someone who knows MAL. There isn't an official consensus but for Cowboy Bebop, it is known that the dub is acclaimed by fans even if some of them still prefer to watch the sub for the show itself. I assume you are one of those who prefers to watch the sub, which is fine anyway. For a more "official" point of view if you can call it one, Anime News Network thought Wendee Lee bested Megumi Hayashibara. Personally, I have watched Bebop dubbed and subbed, in the end I still find myself having a larger emotional attachment to the dub. But the great thing about Bebop is that people can choose to watch the dub or sub as they're both amazing in their own way. There's a damn good reason why Cowboy Bebop is called "the gateway to anime."

I've never enjoyed the dub myself, mostly because Blum's Spike comes across as exaggerated, smarmy and corny. I prefer Yamadera's much more dry and wry Spike. It's much more true to that noir feel.

IMHO, Faye's English voice sounds sultry and savvy, very femme-fatale. In Japanese she sounds like a little highschool girl running with mobsters while pretending she can keep up/knows what she's doing. Julia sounds spot-on in both.

I think a well done Dub is the best... but a poorly done Dub is the worst. This is the best of the best. There are subtle aspects of a dialog that you can only pick up if you understand the language. This is a perfect example. The subtle tones in the voices of the characters help you get to know them over the course of the series. You pick up on their indifference or melancholy based on the inflections and tones in their voices... things you just don't quite get unless your native to the language. If you ask me this show is still the gold standard of dubbing.

For someone who hasnt watched this show other then a few EPS when it was on tv when I was younger, what would be the best way to watch it in first even if both are best I usually only watch my animes in Sub because I don't like the way some of the shows sound in english but from what I remember the english did sound goood but never even knew this had a sub version till now because it never crossed my mind till my brother and his friends kept saying how great this show is and how they keep rewatching it. if I should watch both let me know but just let me know which I should start with first.

Gotta have to say I prefer the Dub for a few reasons. For instance Spike sounds smooth in English while the sub's voice..... I just get the feeling of some other less special male anime protagonist, but not the smooth cigarette smoking Spike who teaches that you have to be like water. The sub Spike kind of changes his voice between emotional and comedic moments too much while Dub Spike stays the same more. This video has somewhat of a same opinion on it and I think explains it better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYSWoIdvod-Anpo Also for me Faye sounds a little weird in Japanese at times......more girly than she should be while in English she is more of an adult......a little bit of a Femme Fatale if you will and that suits a bit better in my opinion. The rest of the main characters feel pretty even to me. And besides, reading subs takes time away from the middle of the screen since subs are down on the edge of the screen so I get to see less animation, because I am occupied with reading so there's also that. Overall I enjoy Dub a bit more.

I have talked pretty much daily with people from the states, and somehow just most dubs dont sound like how people speak. Thats my main issue with English dubs. Not that I hate all dubs, some dubs for Animes in a language spoken in my country sounded pretty good (not all thou) but imo thats because they spoke like people do over here, localizing it, instead of literally translating stuff, so it felt less forced and awkward. Thats why i personally never enjoy american dubs in anime honestly. Its mostly the accent they put to it, the way they speak. Also, at times it feels like they literally try to translate words from japanese instead of localizing them to something that makes sense in English or at least feels natural.

Listen to Spike for 1 second and if you have any sort of emotional intelligence (or whatever is required) you may become aware that the Japanese voice actors can actually act, and the random westerners they found on the street to dub it sadly cannot

Tbh i think the dub is better but my opinion still stands when i say 90% of dub is trash lol.
