Graham Mate, You Have Actually Saved There Lives. The Chimney Will Collapse, as Roof Collapsed. Having The Ridge go Through the Chimney is Definitely a New One on me, either steel goes in or you have a pad stone. I've Never Ever Seen Anything Like This In my whole life. This happens all the time. Work gets completed to a dangerous standard and where is the building inspector in all this?? They should have inspected the work at every stage? How did the work get to this stage without being stopped?? The UK building control needs a serious overhaul and all builders should need a license to operate. Any dodgy builder should loose their licence to operate! It’s the only way to protect the client!

Substandard workmanship can be incredibly frustrating. It's disheartening when a project doesn't meet expectations. Finding reliable craftspeople can be a challenge. I know a good Russian carpenter, his name is Hacka Lumpoff! Absolutely disgraceful workmanship. Throw the cowboy under the bus.

I was a builder all of my working life (retired now) Most of my work was word of mouth so I only ever advertised in the old Yellow Pages once. We've all made the odd mistake but I've always put things right to the customers satisfaction out of my own pocket. Probably only happened two or three times if I'm honest. That’s what I always tell people if you get several quotes all within the same price and one substantial less you will end up with cut corners. I priced a chimney job up, repoint, change a few bricks, reflaunce the top, any lead work needed and to be onsite when the scaff came down to replace any broken tiles and sweep up the mess. Bloke got a quote very slightly cheaper than mine , he did talk to me about it on the phone I explained my price was belt n braces any thing we find will be done whilst Scaff’s up, but no he went with the cheaper quote then had the cheek to say thiers some broken roof tiles would I come with my ladder a replace them for a drink money. No chance mate I said

@@gbwildlifeuk8269 I'm a former labourer who was taught by some incredible builders, both English and Polish. I have zero qualifications and I always have about a years waiting list for my loft conversions and kitchen extensions, I also do maintenance work for a private school whenever the kids are off, been doing that for years. I've known plenty of tradies who went to college, got their little certificates, did apprenticeships and all that and I'd never have them work on my sites. Ask for previous work, numbers of previous clients, talk to them go round and have a look, I encourage all new clientele to do this. Don't just randomly pick a firm and hope for the best, rookie mistake. Here's a tip, never go for the most expensive quote either, some builders will intentionally overprice the job as to price themselves out of it, it's a sign they really do not want to do the job. From a former labourer who's now self employed. Good luck.
@johnw2758

Not necessarily, dearest quote certainly does not guarantee quality/safe workmanship (not in my experience anyway). I know someone who quotes for ANY job and learns as he goes along, and he ain't cheap either. A lot is pot luck no matter how much research you do. Even if you get one you trust, certain works can be contracted out, you're then in the same boat.

Ive always been told my work is too cheap , never been told it aint good . I charge what i think the job is worth , and had people who are happy with the work saying because they asked how long a job would take , ive said maximum 5days and finished in 3 that ive overcharged them . Even tho they wanted me to do more work, they asked for the work completed, price agreed , to be done cheaper. So my point is , just because my price was cheap , doesnt mean my work isnt up to standards, and sometimes even when a customer is happy with the work , they will still try and get themselves a discount @@Antek_S

As someone runs a business within the building industry and prides myself on working to an extremely high standard this makes me incredibly angry. Unfortunately this situation is not uncommon and I seem to spend half of my time putting other people's work right. Apart from the frustration of having to go in after a bunch of cowboys have bodged the work I fail to understand why it is seemingly so difficult to get these idiots out of the industry. My current clients only complaint has been "I don't need it to be perfect", admittedly this is part of the problem, when spending tens of thousands of pounds it should be perfect.

I'm only a plasterer so what would I know about all the 'structural part' as it's usually all done by the time I get there! However, I'm not a complete idiot. I got a call from a lady once- can I come round and have a look. Metre wide extension on the whole side of her house. Some bits had been plastered (rough as hell) but she said the builders "come and go". I didn't say too much to her as I didn't want to worry her but even I thought what on earth have they done here? Long story short, it works out the 'builder' charging £50,000 was actually a fireman and his 'mates' doing building work on their days off. I got a couple of trusted people I knew in to put things right and did all the plastering to my usual high standard. Two weeks work for me (all rooms totally floated and re-skimmed not just 'patched in') and never saw 'the builders' once. As far as I know, the lady was going to take legal action of some sort but I didn't get involved so don't know the outcome. What I do know is when I'd finished, her home was in a much safer condition than when I first looked.

Well done for naming and shaming. It’s pure greed and blatant disregard to others safety and livelihood to take on work if a firm does not have the skill, competence and experience (and care!) to carry out the work. The consumer should have a good claim in negligence (and breach of contract), and recourse under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which can be persued through the Small Claims Court, at minimal cost to the consumer. I hope they recover their money. Best wishes with the reinstatement works.

Well they're not going to be able to stretch those timbers they've cut short and wonky to fit properly are they? All that "finishing" it will do is cover the appallingly bad structural work up and hide it until the first gale force wind when the roof fails and the home owner's buildings insurance refuses to cover it after their assessor has been to see it because it was built wrong.
@c4r5on88
@c4r5on88 22 сағат бұрын
@jamieduff1981 still not finished though. Yes things can be changed. I'm not saying anything is done right but when a job isn't finished it's easy to come in a slate it. Like that brick work missing. What's point in mentioning it if it can yet be built up ?
@jamieduff1981
@jamieduff1981 21 сағат бұрын
@@c4r5on88 the point is that this build needs to go backwards again before it can go forwards. The roof is simply incorrect and cannot be made good without removing it and redoing it. It's easy to "slate" it because it's terrible quality work, and it's appropriate to critique it now rather than allow any further work to proceed garnishing and spending even more money on something that is fundamentally flawed and needs stripped out and started over. This would be like thinking a bad baker should be allowed to ice and finish decorating a cake before anyone points out that it's been made with salt instead of sugar. The problems aren't that it's unfinished - it's just wrong. It doesn't matter how many times you cut a plank of wood - it never gets longer. If roof structure has been cut short, it needs stripped and replaced, not "finished".
@c4r5on88
@c4r5on88 21 сағат бұрын
@jamieduff1981 planks or pieces of timber can be extended properly without the need to swap the whole piece out. Look at some older properties that are still standing today. Some were clearly built by highly skilled individuals. And some wasn't yet they are still standing. The roof certainly isn't going to fly off. Yes it's not a great job in any sense but I've certainly seen much worse and the only time you can say something is bad or wrong is once they class it as finished. @@mohammedbashir1281 Are you a builder mate? What's it like when a Pakistani builder does work for a Pakistani? Genuine question. I bet the negotiations on price take forever? Lol. I made the mistake of doing work for Pakistanis in the past, they still owe me money now. Cut my losses, lesson learned, never again.
