Bloke got a quote very slightly cheaper than mine , he did talk to me about it on the phone I explained my price was belt n braces any thing we find will be done whilst Scaff’s up, but no he went with the cheaper quote then had the cheek to say thiers some broken roof tiles would I come with my ladder a replace them for a drink money. @@gbwildlifeuk8269 I'm a former labourer who was taught by some incredible builders, both English and Polish. I have zero qualifications and I always have about a years waiting list for my loft conversions and kitchen extensions, I also do maintenance work for a private school whenever the kids are off, been doing that for years. I've known plenty of tradies who went to college, got their little certificates, did apprenticeships and all that and I'd never have them work on my sites. Ask for previous work, numbers of previous clients, talk to them go round and have a look, I encourage all new clientele to do this. Don't just randomly pick a firm and hope for the best, rookie mistake. Here's a tip, never go for the most expensive quote either, some builders will intentionally overprice the job as to price themselves out of it, it's a sign they really do not want to do the job. From a former labourer who's now self employed. Good luck.
@johnw27582 күн бұрын
Not necessarily, dearest quote certainly does not guarantee quality/safe workmanship (not in my experience anyway). I know someone who quotes for ANY job and learns as he goes along, and he ain't cheap either. A lot is pot luck no matter how much research you do. Even if you get one you trust, certain works can be contracted out, you're then in the same boat.

Even tho they wanted me to do more work, they asked for the work completed, price agreed , to be done cheaper. Apart from the frustration of having to go in after a bunch of cowboys have bodged the work I fail to understand why it is seemingly so difficult to get these idiots out of the industry. I'm only a plasterer so what would I know about all the 'structural part' as it's usually all done by the time I get there! However, I'm not a complete idiot. I got a call from a lady once- can I come round and have a look. Metre wide extension on the whole side of her house. Some bits had been plastered (rough as hell) but she said the builders "come and go". I didn't say too much to her as I didn't want to worry her but even I thought what on earth have they done here? Long story short, it works out the 'builder' charging £50,000 was actually a fireman and his 'mates' doing building work on their days off. I got a couple of trusted people I knew in to put things right and did all the plastering to my usual high standard. Two weeks work for me (all rooms totally floated and re-skimmed not just 'patched in') and never saw 'the builders' once. As far as I know, the lady was going to take legal action of some sort but I didn't get involved so don't know the outcome. What I do know is when I'd finished, her home was in a much safer condition than when I first looked.

If its not finished yet then it may have issues like that.
@jamieduff198122 сағат бұрын
Well they're not going to be able to stretch those timbers they've cut short and wonky to fit properly are they? All that "finishing" it will do is cover the appallingly bad structural work up and hide it until the first gale force wind when the roof fails and the home owner's buildings insurance refuses to cover it after their assessor has been to see it because it was built wrong.
@c4r5on8822 сағат бұрын
@jamieduff1981 still not finished though. Yes things can be changed. I'm not saying anything is done right but when a job isn't finished it's easy to come in a slate it. Like that brick work missing. What's point in mentioning it if it can yet be built up ?
@jamieduff198121 сағат бұрын
@@c4r5on88 the point is that this build needs to go backwards again before it can go forwards. The roof is simply incorrect and cannot be made good without removing it and redoing it. It's easy to "slate" it because it's terrible quality work, and it's appropriate to critique it now rather than allow any further work to proceed garnishing and spending even more money on something that is fundamentally flawed and needs stripped out and started over. This would be like thinking a bad baker should be allowed to ice and finish decorating a cake before anyone points out that it's been made with salt instead of sugar. The problems aren't that it's unfinished - it's just wrong. It doesn't matter how many times you cut a plank of wood - it never gets longer. If roof structure has been cut short, it needs stripped and replaced, not "finished".
@c4r5on8821 сағат бұрын
@jamieduff1981 planks or pieces of timber can be extended properly without the need to swap the whole piece out. Look at some older properties that are still standing today. Some were clearly built by highly skilled individuals. And some wasn't yet they are still standing. The roof certainly isn't going to fly off. Yes it's not a great job in any sense but I've certainly seen much worse and the only time you can say something is bad or wrong is once they class it as finished.
