This would have been especially true after what happened this season. The thing is that they could still have signed Dak before he entered free agency while letting him play out most of this season. Now they are stuck with an injured QB who will most certainly not even be at the level he was this season. Had they been smart they could have let him play even just one half a season and still signed him before he was on the market. Had they waited, his market value would have dropped considerable if they still chose to go with him.

Fish has been around the Cowboys far too long. He has lost a lot of objectivity. His friendship with Jerrry and many of the players clouds his judgement and keeps him from recognizing the stupidity of their relationship with Dak. All of this was very predictable and more is still ready to come. In general the Cowboy media is even worse than Fish. He at least offers some criticism some times. I have never seen so many media of a team promoting the company line. This is probably responsible for their lack of objectivity in regards to Dak. Interesting how their win against Washington involved a large number of recievers rather than just Lamb. Thats because Rush does not focus just on his first option like Dak does. Just one of the his multiple short comings

Fish speaking as a non Cowboys fan, is dead wrong saying Dak losing in a Super Bowl, would have people still questioning weather he is worth 60 mil. What he would have to overcome to get there?! Hell yeah, it would be worth 60 mil- even in a loss. It would be worth 60 mil if he could get us to a championship game- win or lose. Both would go against his history of coming up small in the biggest of moments. That's why you let him play out the season. The odds are in the Cowboys favor that he wiil fail miserably and fall short of any post-season success. No bidding war to be concerned about. Let him walk or sign him for less than 60 mil. I wish someone would tell me who all these weapons were that Dak has had. His 1st season he had Zeke, they were beat by ARod and the Packers on a pass that “only” ARod could throw and they kicked a FG to win. In 2018 his best receiver was an aging/injured Dez Bryant and Noah Brown. In 2018 his best receiver was Tavon Austin and Noah Brown (Cole Beasley), 2019 they acquired Amarie Cooper and Dak flourished but in the playoffs Zeke ran for about 50 yds and the D gave up nearly 200 yds in rushing (sounds familiar) he was injured in 2020. Soooo when did he have all these weapons that made them so formidable. Football is a team sport and it takes all 3 phases to win! Every coach will tell you that. As great as P Mahomes is, he could not lift a bad team to a win ( ie SB LV). Stop blaming the qb for all of the Cowboys woes, it’s a combination of the players, the coaches and the ownership!!!

I think Jimmy agreeing with signing Dak initially was just him not wanting to be contrary and it would have served no purpose to speak against it. His change of opinion where he now thinks it was a mistake is more than likely referring to when the signing took place. It would have been better if he let Dak play out his contract year. How things have played out so far validates that it would have been the right course. Its would not be entirely based on just what has happened now. It more like common sense. As Fish said they felt that if they waited until he was a free agent the price might have gone up. Well they hsd the entire season to still sign him before that happened. There was no logical reason to let the season play some before they signed him. Had they done that it is obvious that his market value would have dropped considerably. There was no way he was going to repeat his production from last season. Anyone, with half a brain could see that. Signing him when they did eliminated multiple options they would have had moving forward. It was just plain stupid. I articulated those options throughout the year. One being that Dak might end up with a season ending injury. Based on his age and the his obvious physical decline and wearing a boot were all red flags that they ignored.

Jimmy saying that Dak was "the guy" isn't the same as saying "I (Jimmy) would have signed him." Jerry shouldn't have signed Dak. I said that in September. Jimmy is correct. He hasn't contradicted himself. He wouldn't have done it. He's already proved what he would do. This is going to be really good if MM coaches this team to the playoffs with Cooper Rush rushing (and fumbling), without my favorite player Zack Martin, and WITH Rico Dowdle banging through for 100yd/ game! 😊 I contend that there is a scenario where JJ signs MM if he wins 1 or more playoff games, provided they make it to the playoffs.

Good evening Fish. Happy Pre-Thanksgiving to you and your family and Happy Thanksgiving Cowboys Nation. Fish it's a shame you're repeating yourself on alot of things tonight that you talked about before Dak and CD was signed. Now Jimmy Johnson is saying things it becomes new to fans. Jimmy Johnson kept saying Dak is the guy and congratulations. Some of these guys that are older are starting to forget what they say. I guess it's normal with age. They just have to be reminded and not say they didn't say it. Or they'll easily say that they don't recall saying that. Lol. 😂 Have a blessed and wonderful night. DC4L.

Damn, everyone in the comments doesnt watch football. Dak was #2 in the mvp race last year and led the league in passing and passing touchdowns. Lets remind you that he sat out 4 games in the 4th quarter. He also has lead the offense to the #1 offense 2/3 of the last few years. Any team would pay dak besides the select few that have their own highly paid franchise QB. Injury happens randomly, they had no idea he'd get injured.

Let’s tell the truth on Jimmy. Facts: Jimmy had the Hershel Walker deal to begin his professional career AND no salary cap to hold him back from acquiring the players he wanted. Given the equal playing field of no Hershel Walker type deal and a salary cap, In four seasons at Miami, Johnson compiled a 36-28 record and went 2-3 in five postseason games. Not bad….but certainly not monumental. That being said, so the move now with hindsight already realized, is to let Dak walk with no compensation? If you didn’t know he was going to get hurt and he was second in MVP voting, Jimmy would have still let him walk out the door? Hmmmm……doubt it. My only criticism with the new contract is agreeing to a No Trade Clause.

They had the rest of the season to sign him before he became a free agent. They should have waited. They lost all their leverage by signing him when they did. Dak probable had to be concerned about injury and not being able to repea last season. That was the leverage they lost by signing him when they did. They were very stupid. Beyond stupid. Had they waited till half the season was over, how much would Daks market value have dropped? Now they have a QB who can not play and might, just might be ready for next season. But probably not at the level he even was this season.

I just don't see how anything changes in this version of biu when the same people are doing the hiring and the "blown up" team has the highest paid nfl player ever, the second, about to be a second, a high end CB contract, and 2 coming up. You're locked at kickers. 3 rookie starters / heavy rotationals. Basically, biu is a myth. What we DO have is a likely good spot in the draft for a change. Limited numbers, so we'll need an excellent draft even by our standards and we will have FA money - too bad we'll squander that.

If the question is 'is Dak worth 60 mil/yr?" On the surface of course the answer is no, actually its HELL NO. However the reality is the actual question was 'are we better off to pay Dak market value (60 mil) or move on and get nothing for him and try to find another QB elsewhere?' That is a totally different question and hard to make a case to let him go. The bigger issue is the complete mishandling of Daks last 2 contracts. They should have signed Dak 2 years earlier on the second contract which would have made the 3rd contract cheaper as well. Given that that didn't happen then perhaps they may have been better to not sign Dak when they did and let him play out the season? But had he played as well as last year then a deal after the season was probably going to be more than 60mil. Now after this abysmal season who knows what they would have done?? How much of Daks poor play is the shit show of a team around him and all the injuries?? Unfortunately in today's NFL you need a QB on a rookie deal or if you are forced to pay market value on a second or 3rd contract that guy better be elite (ie Mahomes, Jackson, Allen) or you are in trouble. Maybe the lions this could prove you can win it all with a good but not elite QB on a contract that allows you to put a ton of talent around him?? Sadly none of these scenarios are what the Cowboys have or are likely to have anytime soon.

That's a completely different scenario! Dak isn't working a regular job. He's playing in a TEAM SPORT, and is expected to win a championship! IF I played QB for the Cowboys, got $160 million in my first contract extension, was getting millions in endorsements for being the QB of the Dallas Cowboys, and wanted to get to a Superbowl....., Yes! I would take less money on my 3rd extension. I think I could get by on $45 to $50 million a year! Absolute greed for him to even ask to be the highest paid player in nfl history! He's far from the greatest anything.

@dhamilton201 you are right it's not the same thing, at least not for Dak, he could have gotten hurt and not get this huge pay he received, so just like almost every body else would have done take the money while you can, why should he care about everybody else. they are not feeding his children or paying his bills, at the end of the day you have to take care of yours.
