Cowboys on skis - January 2023 Routt Recap

The start of 2023 in Steamboat Springs was full of snow! One of my favorite events of the year takes place at Steamboat Resort in January, the Cowboy Downhill. Each year in Denver the National Western Stockshow takes place, one of the biggest stock shows and rodeos in the county, For the last 60 years, the professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls have been coming up to Steamboat to strap on skis and snowboards and compete in a ski race complete with roping and saddling a horse. I was able to ski with Billy Kidd and Ray Heid, local legends and Olympians as forerunners for the race.
I also enjoyed my month, night skiing, sledding at Saddleback Ranch, feeding my sheep, and taking the sunning winter sunsets.
