The poster had the right to refuse, sure. The thing he might have missed is that he was picked because she had no-one else. Because maid of honor often implies a very close relationship, and the fact that she switched to man of honor shows that there was nobody who could be maid. And the fact that she chose you, even though you weren't that close, shows that she didn't have anyone that close. In any event, I think the poster could have handled it differently. I don't think he was being treated as a tool or prop. More like she has some underlying issues that he's not aware of, and somehow he ranked highly enough in her eyes that she thought he could be great in the roll. So he could have handled the situation with a little more sensitivity because by blatantly refusing, she likely considered it a slap in the face and also got stressed again about having nobody in that roll.
