Honestly I feel like the carnivorous cows would've just de-volved their gums on their upper jaws to instead grow a spike or "beak" directly from their skull to dispatch prey. The molars would still be useful for that transitory phase of Apollo cows mooving from plant to meat based diets.

evolution doesn't exactly go backwards though tbh, even if the trait in question doesn't exactly need to exist anymore it would still exist and even if the dental-pad doesn't serve any use anymore the molars will probably end up being used as the new incisors by then

The reason that predators don't use horns is because horns are inefficient uses of material compared to teeth. With teeth, you can capture, restrain, kill, chop up, and partially digest food. With horns you can only kill. A predator that has only teeth will always be more resource efficient and fast than a predator that has teeth and horns.

Counterpoint: Swordfish. Not to mention that this isn't a world where efficiency is particularly necessary, at least not yet - there's literal tons of meat just lying around. Not to mention that horns could absolutely be used for all of those purposes save for partial digestion. Not to mention getting through thick hide and prying open ribs to get at nutritious organs.

@@glarnboudin4462 That's still part of its mouth. It's an efficient adaptation that works in that specific scenario. About the carnivorous cows, my first thought would have been something similar to Duikers: small bovids from Sub-Saharan Africa infamous for the amount of animal matter that usually only eat high quality foods such as fruits and seeds instead of grass. Or something more like cows that became increasingly smaller to reduce competition and due to not being able to afford large stomachs at this size they would go for higher energy food sources such as grass seeds and the insects eating the seeds themselves. Maybe they could also grab a small piece of soft meat such as organs from a large-horned cow's hunt, which wouldn't pay attention to them. These small cows could even start to harden their Dental Pad with keratin for a crushing surface (I believe dental pads have a small coat of keratin in them, correct me if I'm wrong).

And in that initial collapse of the ecosystem as the cattle over ate the environment, I'd expect the plants to diversify as well. You'd likely end up with forests of tall grass, like a bamboo forest almost.

Do you think a cladogram could be possible? I'd love that and love the series so far! I hope if one clade takes to the water, it can be related to the horned predators, so they survive in a different niche to the clearly better adapted predators

I think in the last video you mentioned cows eating seaweed. I can imagine coastal cows eating seaweed and whatever crunchy critters might be in the sea weed; crabs, etc. Then the cows further adapt to start digging crabs out of the sand. Either with modified digging hooves, horns, or even jaws. If they spend a lot of time on sand they'll probably evolve to be lighter and have splayed hooves to distribute their weight.

A few gripes… 1. The cows evolving carnivory seems pretty fast. Especially since they had a nice migration system going on. It seems it might take a few million years more like serina and it would seem more feasible. I would have done it like this: original herbivore > scavenger > boar-like convergent > carnivore - over the span of maybe at least 5 to 10 million years. 2. Just because horned carnivores have never happened before doesn’t mean they can’t happen for this planet! I think it’s very possible for horned carnivores to exist since horns would be icing on the cake for most major predators: territorial disputes, defense from bigger predators, goring prey, slashing prey, mate selection, etc. Not having them would be an evolutionary detriment since they’re pretty good weapons on top of teeth & claws!

Given the lack of any large or woody plantlife, I have to wonder if the grasses on Apollo will end up evolving into these niches, or if the constant grazing would prevent any adaptations of things like thick stems that could eventually become bush & tree trunks or Bamboo.

This is an interesting series! Regarding predating with horns, it may be beneficial for the horns to move to another area - moving down to become more like tusks, or moving to the nose so it can be swung about faster. I could see a pair of short, curved horns on the end of the snout being effective when rapidly swung up into the side or underside of prey - wounding prey like this may not make for a quick, controlled kill, but the predator could then stalk the wounded animal until it collapses. For alternative predator dentition, I'd advise checking out the Thylacoleo, or marsupial lion, which has teeth very unlike those of felines and canines but still filled the same predatory niche, so predatory cows could develop something very weird as well. I could see predatory bovines developing long saber-like teeth/tusks from their lower jaw, and adapting to be able to open their jaws very wide to make use of them - somewhat similar to a hippo. Maybe the incisors become sharp killing "tusks", while the molars adapt for slicing meat? Of course, predation begins an arms race between the predators and the prey, so it'd be interesting to see how the prey evolve in response. Tougher skin with osteoderms, like rhinos? Big horns? Larger size? Some might go the "gazelle" route, becoming lithe and fast, possibly adapting into something similar to horses. I'm not sure how fast plants tend to evolve compared to animals, but it'd be interesting to see how the grasses adapt as well - using the migrating cattle to disperse seeds, perhaps? Developing thorns and toxins to avoid being eaten? They might develop large roots or tubers that survive the periodic grazing, bouncing back the moment the cattle have moved on, which then creates a hidden source of food for *other* cattle to dig up and eat. Some might develop fruit to encourage cattle to eat them and distribute their seeds in their fertile manure. And of course, with no trees, some species might start growing taller to get at the sunlight. All of these would create new niches for cattle to speciate into exploiting, too!

Thanks for continuing the thought process. I think you have some good points. Other directions might be: 1) weakness of defense by cows in a cattle with no predators. Even small insects, parasites, or microbes; or sea creatures might rise to such a challenge with so many tons of tasty beeves available. 2) deer seem like an obvious deevolution from cows -- they need less food, are faster, and reproduce rapidly like rats.

I'm a third generation beef cattle rancher. I also have goats. Cattle will chew bones for the minerals they contain, so I suspect that what would evolve first would be a bone crushing jaw. These cattle could make use of the minerals in bones. Then they might start eating fresher meat, soon killing calves by crushing the fragile calf bones. Another thing not mentioned here is that cattle are herd animals. This means the predatory cattle might work in a pride, taking down prey by circling around and isolating the weak. Now, we don't see horns on modern predators, but some dinosaurs that ate meat did have horns, so I could imagine a critter not losing the horns.

It would be interesting to see the rapid changing of the heavily grazed grasses. Some subspecies branching for deeper holding and stronger roots. Ones that resemble more like potatoes to store it's energy to be able to regrow the leaves. Or grasses that grow tougher leaves, maybe with a light, bitter, toxin to allow for larger and sturdier leaves. This would provide niches for cattle that either devote themselves into rooting or light digging to uproot the nutrient dense root stalks. Or, a subspecies of cattle which develop calloused or hardened upper gums, so their lower incisors can actually cut the stiffer leaves. The second cattle offshoot could also evolve more forward molars, like with the carnivorous line but to tear or break off more rigid leaves

Long horns, I feel, would be vulnerable to breakage from quick movements especially if impaled in a struggling animal. Alternatively the skull could broaden and become more robust with the horns shortening to small and stout spikes on the top of the skull. This would help with cow tipping and impaling but not be at risk of breakage Hooves becoming a more specialized killing tool would be interesting. Pulling meat from bone also tends to require holing down the prey with a foot while pulling with the mouth. Large hooves would make this easier but might lack sharpness. Might be too fantasy but I envisioned one where the horns substitute as teeth by growing long fairly flat and bladelike beside the skull and pointing down alongside the upper jaw. A convergent evolution of the Sabre teeth

Oh delight! A second ep. Thank you for your dedication. Also I find your art charming and fitting to the ranch theme: it reminds me of old American tattoos and the early pastoral paintings. In terms of naming species, which the comments seem quite invested in, do as you'd like and don't break a sweat about it once speciation really takes off. It'll be useful to have names for the major lineages, but they don't necessarily have to be Neo-latinate. Recognisability and comprehension of the terms should in my opinion reign supreme. I find it equally easy to follow new species terms in Neo-latin such as porphyriphyte AND those following the English trend of calling everything a pig a lion or a deer. (Guinea pig, sea pig, mountain lion, marsupial lion, musk deer ...)

So far, I'm planning to start with a common insectivorous microbat (Little Brown Bat) as the base species. Then, I'd explore how they diversify once their insect prey do so first and especially once carnivorous bats start appearing. Overall, there's quite literally a world of possibilities here, at least for Planet Nox!

New Cattle concept: "Magnurex" A large carnivore that evolved their frontal legs to be much larger and stronger than their back legs. The creature ranges in size from rhino-sized to elephant-sized. Instead of having horns like other cattle, they have no horns at all. Instead, their forehead is covered in bone in a dome-like shape. A massive tail on the Magnures's back is used for defense and stability while walking. The weight of the Magnurex (at maximum) can reach 7.5 tons, although these types of cases are rare. Large, knive-like teeth the size of bananas allow the Magnurex to tear apart meat from prey.

Cattle with frontal horns remind me of triceratops build, you might want to research on that, expecially how they evolved enlarged craniums to act as "shields" where multiple members of a heard would present their heads toward predators while surrounding the weakest members like the calves. Speaking of calves, they would probably be the primary targets of any predator

As opposed to a completely grassy planet, I would be interested if the planet had many diverse biomes and was simply devoid of other vertebrates for any reason suitable (maybe the humans that put them there got rid of all the other vertebrates if an explanation is needed.) It would be interesting to see how cows might evolve in radically different climates, especially those with many trees and dense foliage.

With the aquatic cows, I feel they would start with wide hooves to walk through soft terrain, followed by denser bones to move through water and large strong lips for water plants, into something akin to a less aquatic less gracile hippo, and I imagine some would retain this body plan while others become "sea cows or even start going into cetacean like forms and carnivory may evolve independantly a second time in some of them, probably as aquatic insect eaters As carnivory goes by it's interesting how this limited dentition could evolve into something better meat suited could be Thylacoleo as one mammal that did exactly this kind of transition (from a less especialized herbivove tbh but example still goes) and the dental pad could get some modifucations to get some kind of use in restraining dificult prey. Body form wise I picture the first true efficient carnivorous cows would most closely resemble pigs in body plan then something andrewsarchus (or whateever it's name the carnivorous artiodactils that resembled our modern carnivores but with hooves) before eventually some redeloping claws or more claw like hooves
@bzdurek6701
@bzdurek6701 10 ай бұрын
I feel like horns upfront would be really a problem. When you hunt with them, this body plan would increase likelihood of breaking horns, which would render the cow unable to hunt, or breaking of necks, looking at the point of balance. I think shape of horns is important, as it's a quality that already have a lot of diversity, and would be easy to bread some particle way. As those predators would hunt for cattle, blunt force trauma would be ineffective, so no ram horns. Hunting tools should also be eather durable or easy to replace, so I would opt out from long and pointy horns. I feel that the most beneficial would be eather something like Musk deer tusk (possibly even evolved from down shaped horns) or hooked horns able to slash critical points on other cows throat. I could absolutely imagine sealth cow with similar tactics as a big cat.
