Interesting that the Partridge Family was based on this family. On a Partridge Family album, this exact song, I really want to know you, was sung but just a bit different but I recognized it immediately. Interesting to hear this now when all I knew was the Partridge Family one.

They didn't "pass" on the show! The TV producers ONLY wanted Susan, and said the rest of the family were "stick figures" and not needed.

@robertbrescia31963 ай бұрын
The producers of the show spent a few days with the family to try to get a handle on the kids and whether they would be appropriate for acting in a TV series. Yes, they were "stick figures", mostly due to their personalities being suppressed by their overbearing father (just look at interviews conducted with surviving Cowsill siblings over the past 25 yers or so - all of the surviving siblings are quite intelligent, insightful and engaging). The other issue is that the role of the matriarch would be played by Shirley Jones and not Barbara. There is a scene in the Cowsills documentary showing a conversation between Bob Cowsill and Shirley Jones about the casting of The Partridge Family. Shirley said she was never told about her substituting for Barbara.

_"I want to know the pain of all your secret fears. And when you speak of them, the ones that no one hears."_ That sounds like the family trying to open up about their own then secret pain.

This is certainly a classic performance. I wonder what other songs Barbara (Mom) sang lead on? However, I give Susan the nod on her rendition in the Billy Cowsill tribute concert. I just think she did an overall better job. Just my opinion, so please, Mom Cowsill fans, don’t rake me over the coals for it!!!

The only song both the Partridges and Cowsills both cut. Shirley Jones was featured on one, and a rare Barbara Cowsill lead on the other. One great Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil song. Columbia did audition the Cowsills in 1969, but determined only Susan had any acting ability. Thus, Shirley & Co., with LA's Wrecking Crew and Ron Hicklin's singers backing David and Shirley, who met with the Cowsills; they became longtime friends.
