A little over 3 years ago. People were experimenting with just an air intake restrictor (barrel) but it was about 3 years ago that a commercially available unit was offered. To the best of my knowledge. It's not perfect, but does work pretty good considering the cost. The Cox .049 has nostalgic memories for me. Since it was the engine that I learned how to fly controline on in 1966.

My Father had a Cox 049 Powered Car with a exhaust restricting throttle. It worked surprisingly well. I have never seen these newest released Cox's . The ones I had ( my Dad nabbed them all back and he's got them all now lol ) were from the 60's 70's and 80's with the rear metal gas tank.

Yeah, I remember those. I always felt they robbed power from the engine compared to an unrestricted engine. But they worked. It's worth trying one of these air restricting throttles. I've wanted to try one of these on a plane. With todays light electronics, a 4 channel .049 is viable. When I was younger, it would have been impossible. Thanks for the comment.

NICE! I know this engine is meant for rc planes, but I want to get it for other things. I want to try building a gas powered mini air raid siren, an rc hover craft, an rc propeller driven car, and many other things with this engine. And mainly just to run it and mess with the throttle for fun. I love engines and have always wanted a small engine to mess with. And with this engine being 30 bucks, that is amazing! I would totally pay 30 bucks for an engine like this! And thanks to this video, I can now do all these things with this engine! Once I get a 3D printer, maybe I can even make a mini weedwacker with this engine! Or a mini lawnmower! This engine sounds alot like a weedwacker bc most weedwackers are also 2 stroke!

Thanks for the info, oh wow 1966 I wasnt born yet haha, Im sad to say this but I actually broke my cox engine by trying to open it apart and lost it ever since. I had the controlline Cox 49 Corsair, but never get it to fly..in a way im glad it didnt, because I would of hurt myself since I didnt know what i was doing. Engine started really loud for few seconds then turned off. Now a day I fly multirotor. Thanks so much for the video brings back so much memories for me.

They will with a diesel head conversion. You have to be able to adjust compression but I don't have any experience with diesel. I would suggest you look at the link that I posted in my original description. Cox International has an engine already setup to run on diesel.

@Mattcscania Well without the throttle conversion, the only thing you can do to adjust rpm is only with the needle valve. But that is only on the ground. Once a Cox .049 non throttled engine is launched, its running pretty close to peak rpm, until fluctuations in fuel amount, speed, fuel delivery has effect on it. So that's what neat about this throttle available from Cox International. Cox .049 aircraft engines were generally released as non throttled engines. Hope that explains.

@BansheeFifteen cheers,one last thing, were do you put the fuel pipe in the engine from the fuel tank? i am thinking of getting one- probably from your shop on ebay, that is why i am asking these questions.Thanks
@BansheeFifteen
@BansheeFifteen 13 жыл бұрын
@jameshoffmandude You run fuel tubing from your tank to a fuel entry nipple that is on the bottom of the tank just the opposite side of the needle valve.

I have to add, make sure the bolts that go through the throttle/backplate and into the crankcase are fairly tight. In current tests I found mine had loosened and I experienced poor running characteristics. Any pressure leak is detrimental and will degrade performance. Not to mention it makes it frustrating to start and run.

@jameshoffmandude with Cox .049 Sure Start engines, you need an external fuel tank. Checkout one of my other videos where I'm test running it

Just wondering... since when was the conversion first made ? the reason I asked this is because I know this type of Cox engine is some what old and back in those days I dont ever see this kind of conversion. (please note that I was a kid back then and might of missed it.)

how do you mount the engine on plane when that tube gets on the way? Mine does not have that tube at all.
@BansheeFifteen
@BansheeFifteen 7 жыл бұрын
You have to makes some kind of standoff from the firewall of your plane. A couple of wood beams the thickness of the tube running parallel to the tube should do it.

Hello I had the 049 cox engines 35 years ago, the problem as always was making them start, can you tell us what changed in the sure start models, thanks
@BansheeFifteen
@BansheeFifteen 9 жыл бұрын
To tell you the truth, not much. The Sure Start engine needs an auxiliary tank. A spring starter on the front really helps. Other than that, I find them easy to start. Make sure you have a good starting battery and all the bolts on the engine are tight ( insures no air leaks) and they're pretty easy to start. Most of us like fuel with 25% nitro, Sig Champion 25 is pretty good. There has been different reed valves, different glow heads, but all in all, they all start. I started with a baby bee .049 back in 1967 as an early teen. Get enough experience with one and you know just what they need. Compared to the market, they're not the most powerful, but for the price they are remarkable. Get one running at 16,000 and they really get your attention. Definitely a minature marvel. Hope that helps.

+BansheeFifteen Also knowing when to prime the engine or detecting a "flooded" condition, can make a difference. For starting, make sure your glow plug battery is strong enough to make the nichrome wire in the glow plug heat to the point it is glowing orange. Always disconnect from the glow plug when you are checking things to preserve the battery. When first starting, sometimes a drop of fuel at the exhaust port will prime the engine. You should hear a hiss when the battery is on, if not and you have too much fuel in the cylinder you might have a "flooded" condtion. Blow out excess fuel and continue. I have found the spring starter that mounts on the engine can make starting much easier. These engines can start in either direction, after it starts, make sure its running the direction you want. A pusher engine will run in either direction as a standard engine.

+bobby “KARTS and ATVS” warrior Yeah, no problem. Funny thing is, current RC tech now makes it possible to build a 4 channel RC airplane powered by one of these little Cox .049 engines. I would have never thought of doing it back in the 60's. Not the greatest engine, but for what they are, they are quite remarkable.

can this throttle kit work with a .049 babe bee engine

Yes but you would need something like this coxengines.ca/cox-.049-backplate-assembly.html with the throttle conversion.

Mattcscania you run full theottle until the fuel is empty or you have a mechanism that controls throttle by reducing exhaust holes
