The correct name is in fact n-acetyl-p-aminophenol but some guys considered that hard to pronounce so they came with the “friendly name” acetaminophen and other guys thought that was crazy name so they came up with paracetamol. And then some marketing genii came with Tylenol and Panadol and Paralen and all the other simple plain names you can remember. Unfortunately there were too many marketing genii that day and so now we have so many different names for it.

@funvidman10 жыл бұрын
Neither Acetaminophen NOR Paracetamol are the "Science name" both are derived from the actual scientific name, however only America,Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan use Acetaminophen, the rest of the world calls it Paracetamol.
@Virginiafox2110 жыл бұрын
Justan Walker (commenting on an old comment, good for me) Acetaminophen is the scientific name for the compound, the common name. For most large compounds, there is both a common name (like say, bleach) and a registered IUPAC name (sodium hypochlorite). In this case, acetaminophen is the registered common name. You can look up "acetaminophen MSDS" to see the compound.
@funvidman10 жыл бұрын
In the USA it is the registered name, and in Japan I believe, the rest of the world calls it Paracetamol. It's actual Scientific name is N-acetyl-p-aminophenol
@funvidman10 жыл бұрын
Virginiafox21 You also might want to try some International information rather than that parochial stuff. Paracetamol is the International Nonproprietary Name (INN), the British Approved Name (BAN) and the Australian Approved Name, Acetaminophen is the Japanese adopted name and US adopted name. (JAN) ( USAN.

The drug is commonly called "acetaminophen" (a sea ta min uh fen) in the US, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Iran and "paracetamol" (pair a seat uh mall) everywhere else. Both names come from "para-acetylaminophenol." The abbreviation APAP comes from "acetyl-para-aminophenol." It's more science-y (Read: IUPAC) name is _N_-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanamide. (you can stop reading here if you understand IUPAC nomenclature) This name means "(a phenyl group that has a hydroxyl group attached to the 4th carbon) attached to the nitrogen on an ehtanamide." In other words, an OH group attached to a planar 6-carbon ring opposite its attachment point on the nitrogen end of an ethanamide, which I (unfortunately) have a hard time explaining in words. Maybe I should major in chemistry... I certainly enjoy the feeling I get when an unfamiliar IUPAC name suddenly becomes perfectly clear to me.

Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen Listeni, or APAP, chemically named N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, is a widely used over-the-counter analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). Acetaminophen is the name adopted for this pharmacologic agent in the U.S. (USAN) and Japan; paracetamol is approved in a variety of international venues (INN, AAN, BAN, etc.). Common trade names in English-speaking markets are Tylenol and Panadol.

Like with most english words it's very easy to get the pronunciation wrong if you've never heard it said. Even more so if you've never seen it before. I assume you know how to say it because you heard it said in a commercial or your parents said it? If so... well done? And if that's not the case and you just got it right then congrats! You guessed correctly! In english, that's basically all you can do with new words. Guess, hope you are right, and hope the person who ends up correcting you isn't a dick for no reason.

Paracetamol is the International Nonproprietary Name (INN). Acetaminophen is the United States Adopted Name (USAN). Tylenol is a brand name, which is most common brand in US but not elsewhere for the same substance. E.g. in Sweden people wouldn't know which exact medicine Tylenol was, but they would know for Alvedon. The actual substance has two different names in broad use: - Acetaminophen US abbreviation, should probably be divided like acet-amino-phen because that's where the boundaries on the chemical name components are. - Paracetamol is the international abbreviation of the same much more complex name.

Acetaminophen is used in more than just tylenol, most notably alongside other painkillers in hospitals, tylenol is just the over-the-counter brand name for it. The problem with it is that it will only take 4 grams of it to kill you, so if you are given a lot of medication that all have acetaminophen in it, then you could end up being in bad shape, or just dead.
