Been using that type of set for years n your are correct it is the ticket. If you get one not wanting to commit, set another trap left top half way along side of trench n make a small opening on dirt that is mounded up. Thanks for sharing.

Put two of these in yesterday one for coyotes and the other for for cats. The cat set only difference was i blocked it in on both sides with artificial Christmas tree limbs and used some cat collector and feline fix as well as some catnip and silverbine in a coffee filter hung up in the back from a string to also work as a visual attractor and had my 3 multi collored fethers out front of the set on a fishing swivel about 4 and a half ft high. Also added some thorny branches from Mesquite and locust trees to the sides with the fake limbs just for added deterrent, and place peace of cactus right in front of trap and backside of trap allowing only one place to step. Coyote the one that i intended for Coyotes ( who were yippin and howling not 100 yard from me as i put in the set) was just tour usual trench set. No blocking up of sides with brush just open with real Subtle guiding around the trap. Violator 7 down the hole and hiayawatha vally and. And since i breed rats for my snakes i have a freezer full of all the bigg males that are to bigg to feed my snakes so took one giant one and cut it in half and threw into each hole for a visual bait. Well checked this moring and i had bobcat tracks all over the trap and strap jaws at the set for coyotes. Looked like he two stepped all over that trap except for right where the pan was. didnt get the bait out tho. This trap being a duke #2 4coil stock pan. If i had a haded a larger pan to it like i did the other trap i would've had him. Wellat the cat trench set he managed to get in and out with my bait while only putting his paws down in two spots from what i could see. One being on the jaws again and right up against the cactus pad. Mind you i made my own expanded pan that takes up all the space in between the jaws while still allowing the trap to function properly. It looked as if he tiptoed on the jaw. I had the cactus right up to the trap jaw/lever but since the cactus is oval shaped it leaves a really small area of safe dirt to exposed. Its as if that cat knew exactly where my trap pan was at each set. I was baffled. One for having a cat work the sets on the first night two for how i he pulled off some mission impossible tyoe skills on me. Ohand not trhat its important but both sets are on the up wind side of a gas line clear cut about 50 yards away from each other.

For sets John in your country I'm gonna use flat sets and portable pockets. Just because I don't think you want to go digging dirt holes unless you were up on a hill a bit. As for guidance I intend to just poke some sticks in to tell them where not to step

This is my favorite dirthole for cats and dogs. I have several tutorials on my channel of this same set. Great vid man! The original name of this set was called the Charlie Robbins dirthole. OG used and taught this set also. I would have to check my book, Hoofbeats of a Wolfer by Ogorman, but i think this set is in it. I learned it from Ed Schneider years ago, havnt looked back since Richard from Kansas;)

Yes Charlie Robbins developed it. Ogorman has taught it for years. I first learned it in his wolfer methods 2 vhs tape as i recall. It just takes the guess work out of guiding their feet. Thank you for watching and the kind words as well. We appreciate it

Been taking lots of critters with a set just about identical. Anything from mink to coyotes. Yes mink. 😂 I don’t run my pan tension as high, because I want the mink, coons and everything else. A good mink gland is hard to pass up for a lure maker. I just love it as a change up on yotes.

@cofieldcountryoutdoors45672 жыл бұрын
I do a set similar to that if I'm trapping logging road edges with lots of brush with good success. I tend to stick with smaller profiled dirt holes in cow pastures because in my mind. The yote is hunting voles, and moles. The larger dirt holes tend to make the dog shy away by several feet its not use to seeing that type of disturbance in cow pastures. But in rough terrain areas, I use a similar set just no where near as large.
@billingsleybrandtrappinglu15312 жыл бұрын

@billingsleybrandtrappinglu15312 жыл бұрын
So ive thought about this all night. Im not being a smart alec but i gotta know. So your coyotes in east Texas if they come up on a ground hog hole or a badger digging or even a barn rat hole in a cow pasture they wont go near it? But if its in brush then they will?? Y'all have some strange coyotes in east texas if thats the case
@cofieldcountryoutdoors45672 жыл бұрын
The only true large terrestrial burrowing animal we have are armadillos, they mostly make there dens in dense wooded areas. Very seldom will you see them in the middle of a cow pasture especially if the rancher does quality pasture maintenance against grub worms. We don't have badgers or ground hogs. Every once in a while you will come in contact with a dug out fox den but for the most part they den in hollow tree lay downs here. What we do have a abundance of is moles that's why I use a 2" auger to put in my dirt holes roughly 18" deep with very little dirt mound to guide the animal. Also when the yotes are running cow pastures they are nibbling on fresh manure. This is especially true during winter calving season due to the calves high protein and fat diet coming from the mothers milk. During this season I tend to run cow trails using a modified flat set with fresh cow pattie or dropped placenta as a backin with a small rebar sized hole and a quality urine. Different parts of the country definetly call for different techniques. I feel quite certain if I was to ever trap your part of this great nation I would have to adjust my habits. Thank you for your reply.
@billingsleybrandtrappinglu15312 жыл бұрын
No sir you're right ive never trapped in east Texas. But i have trapped in iowa, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and Kentucky. And while i did have to change a few things due to the constant change of weather patterns, the 1 thing that never changed was coyotes being being coyotes.
