Whoa. I think these two videos have been amongst the best I've seen on survival. Sure, starting fire is essential, and guns and the toys of survival are cool, but these two videos been the most *real* about what survival is. As someone new to survival/prepping, who has never hunted, never did more than start the first stages of prepping, I can fully respect this "be ready to eat what you kill" mindset. Dave, I appreciate your willingness to show the *reality* of what survival living is. It's a far better education us armchair survivalist/preppers will receive than from any TV show, article in a magazine or online, or some podcast host talking about his supposed exploits. Awesome, powerful stuff.

This is exactly what i was talking about in my bushcraft brunch video. The best way to eat meat in a survival situation, is to boil it , because you get the fat and such in the water you lose nothing and get the most benefit from the meat, by eating it and drinking the broth. Good video and well done, exactly you eat what you catch to sustain you, thanks dave.

Meat is meat Karen you can pretty much eat any animal or bird . tho some you just need to prepare differently. In north america i cant think of any that you cant eat, if its known as poisonous then i wouldnt touch it, for it may be prepared a certain way. Think about it the inuit have eaten their sled dogs in times of need and cats are or have been eaten in other parts of the world, as well as even rats. Take care and yes Dave puts alot of ideas out there most dont think of or know.

Last time I ate coyote was 40 years ago on a "survival" camping trip. We only had salt and pepper for seasoning, but I would use Old Bay these days - and maybe some garlic powder. We cooked at ate a good meal and smoked the rest for later as it was summer time in Texas. Great video. Thanks for the reminder!

Are there any diseases/parasites that can NOT be cooked out of meat? As long as your kill is cooked thoroughly, are you free and clear to eat anything you catch? Remembering the heart worms in a the coyote killed at the advanced scout class. The heart wasn't eaten, but are there similar cases that would prohibit you from eating the meat?
@dofishbuster

To my knowledge if you thoroughly cook meat it is safe. That said I stay away from anything that looks off for example the heartworms in the coyote or fish with parasites in the flesh.,

This is a really important point! According to the CDC 'For All Wild Game (whole cuts and ground) Cook to at least 160° F (71° C)'. You'd definitely want it cooked through to be on the safe side. Another important point from the CDC about Freezing wild game 'Freezing wild game meats, unlike freezing pork products, may not effectively kill all worms because some worm species that infect wild game animals are freeze-resistant. www.cdc.gov/parasites/trichinellosis/prevent.html

Speaking of broth, I'd reckon that when you've harvested all the meat, you could boil up some of the bones and particularly the joints and cartilage for one heck of a coyote stock. You'd have a great base for stew and soup. You could even freeze some of it and squirrel it away like you did with your... squirrel.

Love the title. Coyote sounds good to me! Hey Dave, could you or one of the instructors make a video about natural seasonings & spices? Can you really season meat with gunpowder? - "The Edge"
@PehrBl
@PehrBl 10 жыл бұрын
Well lets see gunpowder is salpeter, sulfur and charcoal. Sulfur has been used traditionally in the diet as medicine (for example to deter flees) not sure how much is safe though. Salpeter is used traditionally to preserve meat (specifically certain bacteria) but there are some science that points towards larger quantities leading to cancer. and charcoal has been used (and continue to be used) as medicine. As blackpowder is 75 % salpeter and there is some concerns about cancer I would probably recommend cation with the seasoning but in an emergency and you needed to preserve meat it might be useful.

the ice-block cache method of winter preservation is ingenious! ive always been told that there is parasite risk when eating predators, and in the older books ive read the trappers usually eat them but some mention always boiling it rather than other cooking methods (presumably for killing of parasites). any thoughts?
