Coyotes Love New York City

You never know where you might see a coyote next. On Monday morning, police chased another coyote through the streets of Queens. That makes sighting number seven this year in New York City.
On Saturday, cops caught a coyote roaming the streets of Battery Park.
And earlier last week, NYPD launched a full on search -- chopper included -- after another was spotted on the Upper West Side.
Wildlife experts say you don't need to worry. Most coyotes are afraid of humans. But with the population growing and more sightings being reported in Manhattan, the goal now is to keep them afraid.
So where are they coming from? Travis Brady with the Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale says most of the coyotes we've seen lately are from Westchester and upstate. They are fully grown and kicked out by their mothers, much like 18 year olds off to college. They need to find their own territory to start raising their own families away from other coyotes, Brady says.
That is the good and bad thing about moving to Manhattan. No there aren't many coyotes here, but there are a lot of people and potential sources of food, like small house pets. That is why animal control says if you see one in your neighborhood keep your dog on a leash and pet food indoors.
Wildlife experts say most of the coyotes spotted around the city are living alone but there are a few specifically in the Bronx and in Queens that are breeding. So they say if you see one, don't approach it. Just call animal control.

They are extremely smart and adapt well to almost any environment so I’m not surprised. But people shouldn’t worry we can live alongside coyotes and other animals if we don’t feed them or treat them like pets. Maintain a healthy distance and chase them off if they get too curious. Know the signs and symptoms of rabies and call animal control if they exhibit them.

If you do send me a history that claims so, otherwise, read history about NY, see pictures of land prior to fabrications in NY. This whole land if you did not know, was made since the beginning of time full of trees, mountains, rivers, and all that pertains to nature. To give you a piece of education, “PEOPLE” who is believed to be the smart guys here, started tearing down all these trees, blocking rivers, and taking down mountains for their selfish, arrogant, greedy bastards who wanted to make money out of foolish people. The whole country was created this way since the existence of earth and NATURE. So if assholes started tearing down and invading their home land , they had to relocate. So how people, stupid and ignorant people I shall say, expect these animals not to come back to their home land?!

Jonathan Sheehan ignore what the other people that live in a city are telling you. My perspective is in Chicago and if they had asked many people here that notice their surroundings theyd say they’re not surprised to see a coyote. They asked 1 person out a giant population. Cities and the country run on each other and in today’s world it is silly to assume you know all about someone based off of where they live or where they’re from.

I was thinking on the same lines as others here. They might actually help keep the rats under some level of control There are some areas in the city where rats have gotten way out of hand. Perhaps more coyotes in those areas will help to some degree. Coyotes are very adaptive. They can learn to survive in just about every kind of environment.

They have been in the north Bronx forever. I don't think they were ever entirely removed from the Bronx to begin with. There has been at least one family living in Woodlawn cemetery for decades. Why are we humans so damn puzzled? Dumb people!! They need to be relocated. I'm not sure if I'm talking about the humans or the coyotes. : /

They are alive and well here in the Chicago area. Do not listen to these wildlife people who complain that we overtook their land and to just let them alone and they won’t hurt you. The ones here are very large, they are not afraid of anyone or anything. They will either attack you or your pet luring it’s desired prey over to a pack for a gang like attack. I was walking my black lab the other day and a very large coyote came right after him, my lab is strong and and could have held his own but before the coyote could do much I quickly accessed my firearm and killed it. They menacingly walk our neighborhood streets at dusk and dawn, they will attack pets and children. They are a menace, beware if you see them near your home.

They may be scared of us now but so were the pigeons rats raccoons before they really took hold and got adjusted to city life. As they spread farther into the city there will soon be too many for animal control to round up and they like nyc's other animals will soon lose their fear. Not that it's their fualt. If humans hadn't killed all the wolves out on the plains coyotes would have stayed out in the west but now that the wolves are gone the coyotes have room to spread and spread they will. Also animal control idiots rounding up every coyote they see in the city isn't going to help either. It just leaves the niche open for other coyotes to fill. And god I just hate how every city idiot immedialy associates any animal they see with rabies even though they know nothing about rabies or wildlife

This shows how uneducated an basically no common sense. One Example you are far more likely to be assaulted by a human than attacked by a coyote. Leave them alone

They are very dangerous to the baby foxes and small pets. More like pieces of tender meat.

I love coyotes but they will eat your small pet or even a small child. Do not tell people that they are not dangerous. They can be very dangerous. I live in an area where there is a huge coyote population and have seen them take animals and injure children in an attempt to carry them away. People need to ignore them and not act afraid of them. That's the best advice for dealing with coyotes. If they are near you, make yourself as big as possible and be loud. Don't turn and run and let their prey drive kick in. Once they lose their fear of humans, injuries to humans and pets will surely occur. There is a good chance of deaths also. Don't take them lightly but don't act afraid of them. The big problem in NYC is that there is a never ending supply of food. They will eat the discarded food just like the rats do AND they will eat the rats also. That's one bonus they bring to the city. They will eat as many rats as they can. Lol, that's a great thing.

I bet they'd adapt to a plentiful diet of garbage rather than go for house pets. People better watch their toddlers though.

Haha. Korean have killed all wolves, foxes, tigers (all extinct) and most of bears and bobcats (they are near extinction) in the 20th century. The only feral mammals you see in cities are cats. There used to be stray dogs up until 1990's, but they are somehow gone, too.
