Underwater 3D Channel- Barry Chall Films

Content for this high quality film was shot over a 7 day period in July of 2016 & highlights the beauty of the Cozumel coral reefs and the diverse life which inhabits them. It was filmed in native 3D by underwater 3D videographer Barry Chall for the Underwater 3D Channel. Since many people don't have 3D capability, this is the 4K 2D version of the film.

Harp music was beautiful and enhanced the video. The colors on that queen angelfish seemed unreal, purple instead of blues and greens.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Are you referring to the angel at approximately 9:38? If so, check your monitor or device calibration. Definitely, not purple.

Absolutely peaceful and beautiful. I could watch those images all day, and tomorrow, and... The only thing I would change is the sound track; original sound, as in the first seconds, gives it a more realistic sensation. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Thanks for your kind words. I will say that one of the most difficult things after the film is edited and assembled is finding the right music to go with it. It can be quite a chore and you're never really sure if you got it right. You can listen to a track one day and think it goes perfectly with a scene, then the next day totally change your mind. At some point, it just comes down to choices. Regards, Barry Chall

Glad you enjoyed it. Filming worked out so well last year, that we're now planning to go back this year to make another film in Cozumel. If you subscribe to the channel, you'll get notice of when it's posted which should be by early fall of 2017. If you have 3D capability, there is a 3D version of this film on the channel- incredibly immersive way to view underwater films. Better to view on a TV or projector with native 3D capabilities as the blue and red anaglyph glasses method is not particularly good.

Sorry for the delayed response getting back to you. I've been traveling most of the summer working on a couple of film projects and am finally getting some home time to catch up on things- and spend hours in front of the computer editing. I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I rarely pay much attention to the names of dive sites or reefs and just go with wherever we're being taken. This year, we were continuing work on a 3D film that we've been doing for a 3D theater planned for Cozumel, which hopefully will be built and running by late next year. I do recall the names of a few dive sites that stood out. The opening sequence for this film was shot at Little Delilah. The fish school action was great that day, but hasn't been as good the last couple of times since. Delilah- not Little- was good this year. I also really like Columbia Shallows- great coral formations and fish schools. The Pinacles is also pretty interesting. Sorry, I couldn't give you more dive site names.

Hi Barry, what lens and camera did you use for this video?
@Tarnway
@Tarnway 6 жыл бұрын
Most of it was filmed with a Gopro Dual 3D setup mounted on top of a larger JVC-TD1 3D camcorder housing. It was filmed in 3D at 2.7K medium FOV in Protune mode with color and WB set to raw and flat. This makes for a very flat color profile with higher bitrate which is very good to work with in post. It also upscales very nicely to 4K for the 2D version of the film and downscales nicely to 1080 for the 3D version. The Gopros really do an excellent job with this type of material even with the flat port, particularly for 3D. However, the main downside is that there is no control over shutter speed and I would prefer to be able to shoot everything at 180° shutter, if I had the choice- 1/60th of a second shutter speed for 29.97fps. I never use any artificial lighting and only use red filters.

Thanks Barry. I agree the GoPro is a great camera, I have made a number of videos with GoPro and appreciate what it is capable of. In 2016 I started working with the Panasonic GH4 and am still in the learning curve but having lot of fun learning what can be done when you have control over the shutter speed/frame rate and white balance as you point out. Really enjoyed your work!

First off, thanks for the feedback, I'm really glad you like the films. All of our filming is done in native 3D, and there are very few options available for this. Fortunately Gopro when combined with my other 3D camcorder system gets the job done. Additionally, attaching it to the larger heavier housing helps provide stabilization. We also make 4K 2D mostly night/astro time lapse films for our other channel- Yosemite Channel Barry Chall Films- and use a Sony A7SII and few A7RIIs for this. I've toyed with the idea of someday getting a housing and using those cameras underwater, but I'm actually not sure about adapting a red filter to that system and how well it would all work with the flat/log profile I'd probably want to use. And, of course, it wouldn't be 3D.
@Aquoflite
@Aquoflite 6 жыл бұрын
You said it, that is what makes the GoPro such a great option. So far the only advantage with the Panasonic GH4 for me of has seen is in the maco-capabilties. Still deciding what rig to take on my next trip

The only downside to GP, and it's a BIG ONE, is that after only 1 year, or maybe 2 at the most of light use, the control button o-rings on the housings go bad and the housing will start to leak when the buttons are pressed. Two years in a row now, I've had this problem. What's worse is that Gopro will not sell replacement control button o-rings. When you drown your camera, they'll generally send you a new housing for free- not a new camera however- but they will not make these replacement o-rings available. Even worse, the o-rings are proprietary and can't be purchased from any normal supplier of these kind of parts. Last month, we were in Cozumel shooting some additional 3D footage for a new 3D theater being built there who we are making an underwater film for. First day out, one of the housings leaked and drowned a camera. Fortunately, I always carry backups which I had in a new housing I got from Gopro after last year's housing drowned, so we were able to keep shooting. But, definitely not a good situation!!

There is some but, for the most part, the reef is still in good shape. HOPEFULLY, it will stay that way. Also, the Lionfish population there is much lower than in other areas of the Caribbean, which is definitely a good thing.
