I think it's okay to enjoy problematic elements in fiction lol. Like, some of my fave characters in fiction or anime I would stay far away from irl. Always enjoy your vlogs.
@GoosecheeksАй бұрын
I agree, it’s fiction and I think a lot of people take it too seriously in books when it’s a story, and not the author saying certain things or behaviors are okay.
@feylights166Ай бұрын
@@Goosecheeks exactly. Putting problematic elements in books doesn't necessarily mean you're romanticizing them. You can realize a hot, angsty main character is problematic, and still enjoy them. Of course, there is true problematic writing. For example, you can tell the difference between a book featuring homophobia to showcase the issues of homophobia, vs a book showcasing homophobia because the author is homophobic.

@@Goosecheeksexactly and set aside ppl not liking Colleen Hoover as a person or her books, but I was shocked by the amount of people who kept saying It Ends With Us was romanticizing abuse because when I read it I didn’t get that at all and even based off of hearing women speak about their own experiences with abuse how she chose to write it was pretty realistic, so I didn’t get the frustration for that part.
@HannahFerguson-f3xАй бұрын
@@MollywashereI’m pretty sure it has more to do with her son being a known abuser. :/
@emmabreuil-bosdure429812 күн бұрын
i agree to a certain extent because obv its fiction and most of the time the charcters that are problematic are here for a reason whether to denounce or just because people are actually like that in real life. BUT reading is and has always been political so you cant say that because its fiction it ok. Even more in romance when certain actions are clearly romanticized, for example hauting adeline you cant say that as its fiction its ok to like the ml and sell him as a bookboyfiend or even excuse his actions, because i see a lot of people using this argument when clearly its not valid when a book being selled and promoted as a romance has a r**ist as a ml.

Hi, Regan! I definitely agree with what you said about An Academy for Liars at the beginning of this vlog. I am one of those people who really struggles to read about characters making poor decisions or having questionable things done by and to them. I was really enjoying the magical elements, but had to DNF just because I couldn't get behind the main character. I'm excited to see others enjoying it though!!
@DisreputableCharlesАй бұрын
i’m in the same boat, i ultimately DNF’d at 56% bc i’m just not in the headspace to be grossed out by a student/advisor relationship. might go back to it someday, but yeah

Character actions on their own don't make a book problematic. Just because a book has a character acting toxic or racist doesn't me that the book is advocating for those things. It's fine to like stories about people that do awful things. I'm with Tarantino, "Because it's so much fun, Jan!" The issue changes when the authorial intent IS to convince you the toxic thing is the right thing to do. Even then, let them make their points fully before deciding what the author was trying to say. It is fine you like this character even though she's awful. Full discloser, I own but haven't started an Academy for Liars yet.
