Watching all these book related videos has me very motivated to possibly self publish my first work next year. Typically I work with modern fantasy/spiritual themes, but have dove into sci-fi every so often. I also kind of like tying certain stories into an overall connected universe; sort of like the Dark Tower series. An ever expanding multiverse that can be broken into chunks while remaining one single entity.

A coupe middle grade books I read last year somewhat impulsively for Polarthon ended up being really satisfying page turners - Ember and the Ice Dragons by Heather Fawcett and Frostfire by Jamie Smith. I also loved two books by Pat Walsh - The Crowfield Curse and The Crowfield Demon. There was supposed to be a third book, which still hasn't manifested, but each book has a satisfying ending so you aren't left hanging. Set in the cold and hardships of ...I think the 1400's in Britain, I was amazed at the sense of being in that world the author created. I also really like the Greenglass House stories by Kate Milford (I've read the first two so far) and Winterhouse by Ben Guterson (read only the first one). More recently, a very cold, atmospheric historical novel - The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. I could go on and on but before I write a novella..... :)

I read A Discovery of Witches series a while back. I was probably to young to read it honestly, but still enjoyed the trilogy. "Once Upon a River" is actually sitting on my floor right now since I picked it up from the library. Def check out Diane Setterfield's "The Thirteenth Tale." It's her most popular book. More gothic literature than fantasy, but so great. I was thinking about the book recently and dived further into the author's books, hence "Once Upon a River" now checked out from the library

I have to admit, I HATED Discovery of Witches, but that might have been my own fault since I thought this was a fantasy with a romance subplot, not the other way around (that was at least what it felt like to me, kind of like Twilight for adults). I also thought that it was way to long for the plot and that it could have easily been shortened by half, I was so bored 😅 I was so disappointed since everyone seems to love this book
