As far as I’m concerned, if there is information you wouldn’t want the government collecting on you, then you shouldn’t allow big corporations to collect it either because the government simply partners with those big companies to collect that information on their behalf.

Hi Joel, thanks for this “short update” of your previous video about installing GrapheneOS (on Pixel 7 Pro)! Unfortunately the sharpness of the showed displays isn't so good (autofocus of your GoPro?), but for beginners there is the “pause” function on YT, right? 😉 Important, this time not showed detailed: don't forget to lock the boot loader again after installing GrapheneOS! This is also a great advantage of GrapheneOS, because other custom roms can't do this - they aren't so secure.
@Plazmal8 ай бұрын
4 months late, but you can relock it on a Calyx, and really most other ROMs for the pixels. A rom like Lineage can't though since it's made with other phone models in mind (and most other model a don't allow locking with a custom signing key)

Have you tested the phone (with Graphene) while monitoring through wireshark? Technically its possible for google to implement tracking in the firmware. Have you tested that by connecting it with lan and booting. If its tracking baked into the firmware you should be able to see it connecting to it in the wireshark monitoring.

"Some folks may argue that it's for advertising purposes ..." Here is my proposition to address this. All data relating to an individual and any meta data pertaining to that individual, is the property of that individual. Use and processing of that information should be at the discretion of that individual, who may rent such information to any vendor if he/she so chooses. The individual may also revoke that permission at any time. Back on topic, just bought myself a second hand Pixel 7a and Graphene-ated it - which turned out to be surprisingly easy.

Hi Hoerli, microG isn't so good in privacy and also technically the GrapheneOS devs made the right decision to optimize their remedy with sandboxed Google Services. I have experience with both (Fairphones with /e/ OS) and if you really need Google Services because of apps they need it, then sandboxed Google Services is the better solution. Also because of energy consumption: if you need Push Notification Service for messengers like Session, Signal or SimpleX Chat, they need much less energy in fast mode without running them permanently in background. Another disadvantage of microG: it's a cat & mouse game: they try to simulate Google Services and Google changes sometimes their API etc. to disturb microG. You as customer sit between the chairs …

Your thoughts appreciated.
@CozyLivingMachine6 ай бұрын
That's a great question! While you can't do this on a non-Google manufactured phone, there might be alternatives for Motorola models like LineageOS or CalyxOS and the like. Do you need it? I suppose it comes down to whether you care about the tracking that happens by default. Personally, I do, but others may not! The network permission controls may or may not actually perform as they should, that one's hard to say, but the Google software usually overrides any network access control permission sets and cannot be turned off. Not to make it too complicated but to answer if it's needed... It depends on whether or not you care about Google's access to your location, app usage/interactions, etc. I wish it were a little simpler!

Well explained. Me, am not actually worried about whatever tracking happens on my iPhone since there is nothing at all incriminating in what I do and since there are a few conveniences if 'they' know my preferences and interests. 'They' is just some algorithm, there is no human who cares a whit about wasting time tracking me :)
