CP Rail Detroit Windsor Tunnel Enlargement

This video details the enlargement of the rail tunnel under the Detroit River between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. This enlargement was undertaken in 1994 by CP Rail System so the original rail tunnel, completed in 1910, could accommodate double stack rail cars.

It's about 5 blocks east of the Ambassador Bridge. Go to Google Earth and plug in co-ordinates: 42°19'9.07"N and 83° 4'12.29"W .

CN pulled out in the 90's primarily to build a new own stack train accommodating tunnel between Sarnia and Port Huron MI. CP Rail in spite of the tunnel roof enlargement under the Detroit River still cannot accomodate modern double stacked container trains and until that's remedied they are shut out of profitable Chicago/Montreal/NYC business. CP headquartered in Calgary is raking in the Lion's share of profits in Western Canada doing what they do best. Hauling bulk over long distances.

The only double stack that can squeeze under that tunnel is the lower-cube sea cans. Our North American high-cube containers don't fit two-high. So, you'll see CP run high-cube cans through there only one-high.

The one-time eastbound tube provides maintenance access.

Still not big enough for high cube containers, that's one of the reasons why 142/143 got rerouted to the TH&B.

As to be expected! CN pulled out of the partnership to build this. CN is not a great or even a good railroad by any means! Just a broken down, federally financed excuse to keep Canada unified. CN is a very sad exhibit!
