Presented by Dr Kathryn Williams, leader of CPC’s Lifespan Obesity project node, and recipient of CPC Jennie Mackenzie Research Fund to establish a platform for the comprehensive study of severe and complicated obesity in a family context.
Greater Western Sydney (GWS) has an obesity prevalence that is twice that seen in inner Sydney. The Nepean Blue Mountains Family Metabolic Health Service (FMHS), a public, lifespan obesity service located in GWS, sees people living with clinically severe obesity. Despite living with such severe disease, people can wait five years to access the FMHS and available effective treatments are severely limited due to health inequities resulting from the user-pays environment.
Research has an essential role to play in informing the government and health service response to obesity. It could also define the best way to manage obesity, not just weight. Multidisciplinary researcher-clinic-consumer partnerships, focused in areas and communities with high unmet need, are key to ensuring the greatest impact in this.
