I used to believe that clay was the result of weathering rocks that broke down into sand, which then broke down into clay. However, I was mistaken. Ground-up sand will never produce clay. The history of clay extends billions of years before soil. In more recent times, over the last billion years, the first cellular life may have used layers of clay as a protective physical membrane.
